MedicReS COURSE
Translational and Clinical Research Training
“MedicReS aims to educate researchers and provoke discussion about good scientific method, statistics, ethics, publication,
and education. Faced with stifling bureaucracy, competition for funds and employer pressure to deliver results, finding the
time and space to produce the best research can seem an arduous process. “ The Lancet.
PURPOSE
MedicReS Education Center in Vienna
To improve the quantitative and analytical skills needed for careers in translational and clinical research training using biostatistics and ethics
methods.
Translational Research “Translational research is a way of conducting scientific research, converting findings in basic research more quickly and efficiently into meaningful health outcomes. Translational research focuses on removing barriers or blocks in the scientific process by way of innovation. Two major translational blocks are “Bench to Bedside”where basic science discoveries are translated into human studies, and “Bedside to Community” where human studies are translated to clinical practice and health decision making in systems of care.” Shelley Hurwitz, PhD, MedicReS 2012

Handling with bias, CONSORT
Why Handling with BIAS?
“Estimates of benefits and harms of health interventions are most likely to be accurate when the evaluations are as free of bias as possible. Focusing on randomized trials, this talk will present some of the areas in which bias can be introduced during the evaluation process. Over the last 20 years the influence of different biases has been investigated using meta-epidemiology and meta-bias. Both of these analytical approaches will be discussed along with some examples of these biases (e.g., allocation concealment and single centre versus multi-centre) and their influences on the results of health evaluations.” David MOHER, PhD Director, University of Ottawa Evidence-based Practice Centre.
