Medic maintains an annual compensation review process to ensure the
Agency’s payment practices are in alignment with the market we
serve. This review process is conducted by Medic’s Human Resources
Department in tandem with the local office of Towers Watson, one of
the country’s most respected professional services organizations
specializing in performance management and compensation practices.
We are pleased to have confirmed that for the most part the Agency’s
pay bands and compensation rates are extremely competitively
positioned. There were some very minor adjustments that were
necessary to smooth out the alignment of certain pay bands. These changes, which will be implemented starting July 1st with
the beginning of fiscal year 2013, impacted very few individuals and have been communicated to Managers and Supervisors
across the Agency; none of the impact was negative.
If you have any questions about your specific situation please contact your Supervisor, Manager or someone in Human
Resources.
Compensation Review
Heat was the big story all across Mecklenburg County last week, and the Medic PR Department wants to extend a big thank you to the
Operations Supervisors for giving heat-related interviews to WBTV, WCNC and News 14.
Below are some reminders for your family on friends on staying safe in the heat::
Drink plenty of fluids; remember alcoholic beverages will only increase
your chances of becoming dehydrated; you need to drink plenty of water and/ or
other non-alcoholic beverages.
Do not overexert yourself in the heat, especially for long periods of
time.
Try and avoid extraneous activity in the midday sun.
It is especially important to pay close attention to the elderly and children during
these extreme temperatures as they are particularly vulnerable to heat-related
stress and injury. Below are the signs to look for to determine if someone is
experiencing heat exhaustion:
Heat exhaustion symptoms include:
Often pale with cool, moist skin
Sweating profusely
Muscle cramps or pains
Feels faint or dizzy
May complain of headache, weakness, thirst, and nausea
Temperature elevated-usually more than 100°F-and the pulse rate
increased
If you experience these systems, try to get to a cool place immediately and drink plenty of fluids to replenish yourself.
For more information on ways to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke, be sure to check out our newly added Avoid Heat Exhaustion
page at www.medic911.com/heat_exhaustion.

Congratulations!
As the oppressive heat of the summer continues,
crews are reminded to please be mindful of engines
running idle in the Bay Area.
Continuously running ambulances while idle in the Bay
Area causes a significant rise in already hot
temperatures for our OSTs as they work to restock
ambulances and equipment.
If you are waiting for your partner for an extended
period of time, please be sure to turn off your truck
or pull outside the Bay Area. Thank you in advance as
we all try to keep cool during these record-breaking
temperatures.
Please contact Building Maintenance Supervisor, Ted
Wise at [email protected] you have any questions
Running While Idle
Effectively Saturday, July 14th, the back locker hallway
of Post 100 will be closed to all employees from noon to
8:00 pm.
Contactor crews will be in place to perform floor
maintenance during this time. Please be sure to make
arrangements to retrieve any necessary items from
your locker before Saturday.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Please contact
Facilities and Maintenance Supervisor, Ted Wise at
[email protected] if you have any questions.

Statesville Avenue Ramp Closure
Beginning in the early morning hours of Saturday,
July 7th the building owners will begin asphalt

½ of the lot which is immediately adjacent to the

The fuel pumps will remain accessible, however crews
may have to pull in, then back away from the pumps
once the refueling process is completed. Once the
asphalt has been laid and the work completed, the lot
will be inaccessible for a short period to allow for
proper material curing.

July 1 marks the beginning of the new fiscal year. We will continue with the mandatory compliance training being offered on a
monthly basis for all employees; each employee is expected to attend during the month of their start date.
Outside of the HIPAA and Corporate Compliance training, the topics being covered during these training sessions are continuing to
be developed. Later this year new components tied to safe lifting practices, stretcher maneuvering, physical fitness and overall
employee safety will be added.
It is important to note that employees will continue to paid to attend this training. Field and CMED employees will attend during non-
shift hours and all other employees will attend a class that coincides with their regular work day. Hours for field and CMED
employees will continue to be tracked by the training moderator on a yellow card and submitted to payroll each pay period for
processing. Please note that employees will only be paid for the hours required to complete their specific compliance class. If a given
class only takes three hours, you will receive three hours of pay.
As new components are added and classes run longer, which will be communicated prior, you will be paid for the duration of time
you spent in class. The current classes are running three hours. When the new components are added and the length of the
compliance training is adjusted, everyone will be given amply prior notification so they can plan accordingly.
Please contact Risk & Safety Specialist, Amy Johnson, if you have any questions or concerns about the June Compliance Training
sessions at ext. 6095 or via e-mail at [email protected].
