POETRY SLAM On Friday 13

May Year 8

held a Poetry Slam. At the

Poetry Slam we heard

many good poems - they

had been thought about carefully and written

really well by the students. The effort that all

the students had put in was amazing.

They all had the same amount of time to think

about something that makes them angry and

then write a poem about it. This is actually a

really hard thing to do. The English class then

chose their top three favourite poems. The

hard work the students put into their poems

was tremendous and it must have taken a lot of

effort to reach that level of quality.

The Poetry Slam was excellent as the newly

created poems written by the Year 8 students

were amazing. There was a large performance

of all the poems in the breakout area – these

were outstanding! There were three classes

involved and from each class three

groups/individuals stood up to perform their

poem to the other classes.

All the poems were very creative and exciting.

Some of them were about politics which is a

topical subject to write about, and overall the

Slam had a really good array of different

topics.

My personal favourites included a poem

written by Sanskriti Sahoo and Frankie

Lochhead about equality, and Matt Noble and

James Ellams‟s poem about homework.

There were many other very interesting

poems, but these were the ones that stood out

to me. The overall winner was Ella Denham

8C3 who had her poem read out in the whole

school assembly.

Overall, I believe that the Poetry Slam was a

huge success.

VIC TEE VISITS PRODUCT DESIGN STUDENTS Year 12 Product Design students recently

benefitted from a presentation by the career

engineer Vic Tee. Vic has been involved in a

wide range of projects, including building his

own “Firework” box radio, radar systems,

aircraft systems, colour television, cash

machines and satellite navigation systems.

It was quite clear that Vic has a passion for

lifelong learning and design. The students

gained an insight into Product Design in the

real world as he imparted some of his

knowledge and experience gained over the

years.

Some quotes from the students;

“It was very interesting to hear the challenges

he faced and how he overcame them”

“His talk was very insightful and gave me a

great idea of what a career in Design and

Technology is like”

“It gave me an insight into how Technology

has developed and where it could be going”

“He gave me an insight into what my future

career holds and gave me a better

understanding of the subject”

This opportunity gave our students a valuable

and inspiring glimpse of the real world of

engineering, and we would like to thank Vic

Reeves for providing this enrichment.

Technology

Satellite Volleyball Club

The satellite volleyball club has proved to be a

great success over recent weeks, held on

Monday after school.

As part of the scheme, Sporting Champions

contacted us and asked if we would like an

Olympic Beach Volleyball player to come in

and deliver three sessions to our students. Of

course this was an excellent opportunity and

we have been delighted to welcome Zara

Dampney, GB and Olympic Beach Volleyball

player to St Bart‟s. Zara delivered

inspirational and motivational sessions

ensuring that each student attending received

some individual coaching. The sessions

comprised warm up games, skills and a variety

of small game situations, all of which the

students thoroughly enjoyed.

The club continues to run on a Monday with a

Newbury volleyball coach. All ages and

abilities are very welcome.
