SELF-ADHESIVE VINYL SIGNS
[Warning and informational marine markings meet various government regulations and safety requirements.] Introduction. Self-adhesive marine markings provide a fast, simple method of labeling many items required by federal regulations aboard inspected vessels as well as to meet the general safety and insurance requirements of the marine industry. Using vinyl self-adhesive signs generally replaces time-consuming hand lettering or stenciling. Self-adhesive markings are easy to apply, durable and present a neat appearance. Application instructions. Self-adhesive vinyl signs may be applied either wet or dry. The wet method is especially useful for large signs and offers several advantages. The sign can be repositioned by sliding if not aligned properly, and it can be removed completely and reapplied without damage while it is still wet. The dry method of application does not offer these advantages. 1. Clean and dry the surface where you plan to
apply the sign. It should be smooth and level. 2. Prepare a wetting solution of 5-6 teaspoons of
a liquid detergent in one gallon of cold water. 3. With the sign facing down, remove the paper
backing slowly. 4. Flood the surface where you plan to apply the
adhesive side of the sign with the wetting solution.
5. Position the sign and squeeze it flat from top to bottom.
6. Use light, overlapping strokes with a squeegee or a dry cloth.
7. Dry the entire area. 8. Re-squeegee the sign with firm strokes. 9. Allow the sign to dry thoroughly and
re-squeegee it. 10. If air bubbles occur, puncture them with a pin
and smooth them down with the squeegee. Removal Instructions. Heat the sign with a hair dryer to loosen the adhesive backing. Caution - complete removal may be difficult and may
damage the underlying surface. Once applied, these signs really should be considered as permanent! Need other signs that are not in this catalog? Let us know your needs. Since we require a minimum order for any completely new sign, please call for a price quotation. However, if you only need a few signs whose standardized wording could be of value to others in the industry, we may be prepared to add these signs to our inventory and offer them to you at low unit prices. We also machine-cut stencils to order. Machine-cut stencils are still widely used to mark commercial vessels for inspections. We cut 1-inch up to 12-inch stencils on heavy oil board. The 1¾-inch stencils are generally accepted as meeting requirements for 2-inch lettering. 1-inch letters, numbers and punctuation marks are 30¢ each. 1¾-inch letters are 40¢ except when used on circular ring-buoy stencils where the extra labor and positioning warrants a 50¢ charge. Complete stencil kits used for vessel inspection purposes are available for $100.00. Signs in stock. Marine Education Textbooks maintains the following vinyl self-adhesive signs in stock. Most signs are red on a white background. Spanish/English signs are red and black on a white background. The sizes of the signs are approximate and generally represent the outside of the cut edge of the signs. We reserve the right to change styles and sizes without notice and welcome customers’ advice to improve our products. We are pleased to announce that Marine Education Textbooks, Inc. has been designated as a distributor for DATREX and MARITIME PROGRESS signs. DATREX and MARITIME PROGRESS are leading manufacturers of photo luminescent signs that are visible under low light conditions.

ATTENTION! SECURE ALL LOOSE ARTICLES! NOAA Fisheries now expects petroleum industry personnel to pick up and recover any articles lost overboard from boats and offshore structures as safety conditions permit. Protect marine animals, as well as your valuable time and money, by doing the following to prevent accidental loss of these items: Properly securing all materials, equipment and personal belongings. Articles such as hardhats, life vests, sunglasses, cigarette lighters, parts bags, buckets, shrink wrap, strip lumber, and pipe thread protectors become marine debris when lost overboard. Making sure that all trash receptacles have tight fitting lids and that the lids are used. Providing and using secure cigarette butt containers. Cigarette butts are one of the most common forms of marine debris. Many cigarette butts contain some form of plastic and do not decompose in the ocean. Cigarette butts pose a major threat to marine wildlife, as they resemble food and cause gut blockages and starvation when ingested. Doing your part to eliminate marine debris. Encourage others to be responsible about marine debris by making suggestions to secure potential marine debris on your boat or structure or by participating in a beach cleanup. ATTENTION! MARINE DEBRIS MAY CAUSE SEVERE ECOLOGICAL DAMAGE! Marine debris discarded or lost from offshore and coastal sources may injure or kill fish, marine mammals, sea turtles, seabirds and other wildlife. Thousands of marine animals, including marine mammals, sea turtles and seabirds, die every year from entanglement in fishing line, strapping bands, discarded ropes and nets and plastic six-pack rings. Additionally, unknown numbers of marine animals die each year from internal injury, intestinal blockage and starvation as a result of ingesting marine debris. Marine debris fouls boat propellers and clogs water intake ports on engines thereby endangering the safety of fishermen and boaters and resulting in heavy loss of time and money. Marine debris detracts from the aesthetic quality of recreational beaches and shorelines and increases the cost of park and beach maintenance. . [Complies with MMS NTL 2002-G13, Nov. 15, 2002]

The disposal and/or discharge of any solid waste anywhere in the marine environment (other than ground-up food particles) is strictly prohibited by U.S. Coast Guard and Environmental Protection Agency regulations. THIS INCLUDES MATERIALS OR DEBRIS ACCIDENTALLY LOST OVERBOARD. The disposal of equipment, cables, chains, containers or other materials into offshore waters is prohibited by the Minerals Management Service (30 CFR 250.300(b)(6)). WHAT IS MARINE DEBRIS? Marine debris is any object or fragment of wood, metal, glass, rubber, plastic, cloth, paper or any other man-made item or material that is lost or discarded in the marine environment. Marine debris may be intentionally dumped, accidentally dropped, or indirectly deposited. Whatever the source, marine debris is a direct result of human activities on land and at sea. Depending upon its composition, marine debris may sink to the seafloor, drift in the water column, or float on the surface of the sea. Certain debris, such as plastics, can persist for hundreds of years in the marine environment without decomposing.
