Your Chamber is Here for You!One of the benefits of being President of this Chamber
is getting to know our local businesses better. For me it’s
almost second nature to look first to our Chamber members for almost any
commercial need — from roofing to dentistry to plumbing to dry cleaning
to real estate to legal services, the list goes on and on. I’ve had successful
and profitable dealings with many of you, and broadened and deepened
our relationships along the way.
I invite each of you to peruse our newly updated Chamber Community
Guide and think first about supporting a friend and neighbor. We have
an impressive list of members with substantial experience in a wide range
of areas — and if you’re not sure about the qualifications of a potential
vendor, feel free to ask for references.
We live in a unique and special community, filled with good and decent
people who also happen to be pretty talented at what they do. Give one of
us a try — you may be pleasantly surprised!

The men’s basketball team at Barry
University, picked in a pre-season poll
to finish eighth in the nine team Sunshine
State Conference , has put together a
remarkable season under first year Coach
Butch Estes. At press time for the Egret,
the Buccaneers were 16-6 including a
perfect 10-0 mark in non-conference play.
Led by senior Magne Fivelstad of Norway,
Barry also boasts a number of south Florida
products, including leading scorer Juan
Ferrales (15.2 points per game), steals and
assist leader Deric Hill, and rebound leader
Yunio Barrueta. Junior Savad Garner of
South Carolina rounds out the starting five.
Barrueta, of Miami, transferred from
East Tennessee State and Hill, also from
Miami, and Ferrales of Pembroke Pines,
both transferred from FIU, all three having
played in Division One. The season’s
highlight so far was a 94-76 upset of the
nation’s 6th ranked team, Florida Southern.
Estes is a veteran coach, having led
Presbyterian University for six seasons,
followed by nine at Division One Furman
University. He played at the University of
North Carolina.
The Bucs will open Sunshine State
Conference tournament action on
Saturday, March 1st in Kissimmee.

CHAMBER MEMBER NEwS Charlie Kluck of Preferred Mortgage Bankers tells us that residential lending
will become more difficult in the new
year, due to the Dodd-Frank Wall Street
Reform and Consumer Protection Act.
This new bill effective January 10, 2014
requires stricter documentation and
approval standards for all mortgages.
Under the new law Congress is requiring
all residential mortgage lenders to fully
document the borrowers’ ability to
repay the mortgage. They are requiring a
borrower to have less debt by lowering the
debt ratio as well as lowering the mortgage
limits for FHA loans. The new limit is now
$345,000 down from the previous limit of
$417,000 in Miami-Dade County.
Larger banks are struggling to implement
the new changes but smaller lenders are
moving quickly to become compliant
and even adding new products. This is
evident at Preferred Mortgage Bankers
as they have now added 95% financing
programs as well as a new program for self
Employed borrowers that do not rely on
tax returns. For more information on loan
programs, refinancing your mortgage or a
short sale you can contact Charlie Kluck at

Miami Shores Village recently honored
Code Enforcement Officer Michael Orta.
Michael participated in an urgent effort
to find a gun in a back yard that had been
abandoned by a fleeing suspect. To make
matters worse, police did not know exactly
in which yard it was, and it was “pink”,
making it potentially more alluring to a
child. Thanks from a grateful community
to Mike Orta, who found the weapon
while helping the police search!

MSE would like to thank the PTA and individual
contributors for donating to the Accelerated Reader
Program Initiative. With these generous contributions, the
school was able to save this vital educational tool.
Dates to note on the calendar include March 1, Miami
Shores Unity Day, where MSE will be answering questions
about the school, selling T-Shirts and more, and March 20
which marks the spring session of Reading Into the Sunset
which will take place at the school at 6 p.m.
The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) dates
have been announced for MSE. The school will start testing
April 14th and will run through April 21st. To ensure the
best performance on the FCAT, eat a nutritious breakfast
the morning of the test, and get a good rest the night before.
Think positively and relax. Some people get nervous about
tests, it’s natural. Just do your best.
The PTA is currently seeking advertisers looking to promote
their businesses on the FCAT T-shirts. The school designs,
prints and distributes over 800 T-shirts to every student at
MSE. It is a prime and affordable opportunity to get your
business logo in front of the local community. These shirts
are worn at the FCAT pep rally and are accepted as uniform
shirts, so they may be worn to school any day. Interested
businesses can call or email [email protected] for more
information on pricing and deadlines.
More than 85 public and private school educators and
community members gathered on the Doctors Charter
School campus on February 7th for the third Community Learning Partnership (CLP) Teacher Professional
Development Conference titled, “Creativity and Innovation
in the Classroom through the Integration of Technology”.
The lunchtime keynote speaker was Marquista Shipman,
a graduate of Emory University and the University of
Miami School of Law. Currently a real estate and corporate
attorney, she shared examples of the many ways technology
is impacting various professions. Her presentation was
followed by a Q&A moderated by Dr. Carter Winkle from
Barry University’s School of Education. The afternoon
continued with 6 breakout sessions offered by teachers
from local CLP schools. A big thank you goes out to Miami
Country Day for sponsoring lunch and donating several
great raffle prizes and to the CLP’s steering committee
for donating the grand prize — an iPad! The Chamber
was happy to sponsor the dessert and coffee at the day’s
conclusion. Conference planners Gary Culbertson, Dean of
Faculty/Director of Human Resources, from Miami Country
Day and Shirley Brunache, Assistant Principal at Doctors
Charter School shared that” the attendees were in strong
agreement that the topics, speakers and CLP conference met
or exceeded their expectations.” Visit www.barry.edu/clp for
more information on other programming and upcoming
teacher professional development.

who will attend the ISSF (Independent Schools of South
Florida) Awards Luncheon in April to receive their official
recognition from this organization for their outstanding
academic achievement.
Miami Country Day School (MCDS) held its first
community-wide day of service in honor of the school’s
75th Anniversary on February 8th. Over 1,200 volunteers
gathered together to work on 38 projects both on and off
campus. The day commenced on the school’s athletic field,
which gave an opportunity for volunteers to meet with
their team and enjoy breakfast before Head of School Dr.
John Davies thanked the community for its dedication to
community service.

PAwS, ClAwS & JAwS: PET TIPS THAT woRK
Janet Goodman, Dog Trainer,
www.gooddogbaddogmiami.com
Elephants aren’t the only animals that
never forget. Dogs have good memories,
too. Anyone with a dog that has escaped
from the yard can attest to it. A dog that
has dug under, gone through, climbed
or jumped over a backyard fence will
remember how to get out and will
attempt it every chance he gets.
A pet owner should try to make the yard
as “escape proof” as possible. Fence
perimeters can be secured with chain-
link tension wire, landscape timbers or
poured concrete. Fence height can be
increased to six feet in some communities
(five feet in Miami Shores). Check with
the building department to find out
about fence-height restrictions and
permits. Holes in wooden slats or chain
fabric can be patched, and gaps between
sections should not be overlooked.
Outside supervision is essential for
anyone with a Houdini dog. Even
then, some dogs are too quick at their
escapes. On-leash walks are always a safe
alternative. When all else fails, it’s smart
to look into installing an underground
fence system. Although costly, these
electronic training systems are effective
at deterring dogs from approaching
property boundaries.
PET of THE MoNTHSkylar is a 4-year old, pure-bred golden
retriever and lives with Kaitlyn Rose and
her family. As you can see from the photo,
she is quite adept at tricks and loves to play!

?Each month, we feature a question or
a photograph from our Archives. The
Miami Shores Country Club donates a
$25 gift certificate to a randomly drawn
person supplying the correct response.
The winner is drawn on the 15th of the
month.
Last month we mentioned having gotten a
friendly phone call from Bert Simon, now
retired and living in West Palm Beach. He
once ran a business in what is now called
Downtown Village Square on NE 2nd
Avenue. We asked if anyone knew what
kind of a business it was and many of you
fondly recalled his “Five and Dime”, or
as some called it, the “Five and Ten Cent
Store”. For you whippersnappers out
there, a 5 & 10 was a dollar store, discount
department store, and mega-pharmacy
(sans prescriptions) all rolled into one.
One reader remembered that everyone
called Mr. Simon “Simmie”, and that he
sold everything from holiday ornaments
to materials for Boy Scout merit badge
projects. It contained a lunch counter,
and was in the middle of the block in the
space that would one day house the dearly
departed Parkshore Pharmacy, before
they de-camped for the space next to
Iron Sushi. An interesting side bar: many
readers remembered that several local
young men, aghast at the prospect that
this cherished institution might close, and
that the Shores would be without a 5 &
10, bought it. However, within a year or
so they too threw in the towel to changing
tastes in shopping.
Our randomly drawn winner is Helen
Mendel, 1165 Northeast 100 Street,
Miami Shores. Congratulations Helen!
