Hi everyone,
As we approach the mid-year break we
feel a slight shift in focus towards
assessments, examinations and
reporting. It’s been great to see our
students working hard on revision
strategies over the past week or so,
and I wish our Year 9 to 12 students
well as they embark on mid-year
exams next week.
Our student leadership group continue
to spread positivity around the school,
and they have certainly hit a chord
with their “Four Square” competition
over the last few weeks. It was fantastic
to see such strong interest for the
grand final at lunch time today, with
music, a BBQ lunch and many students
cheering on!
In staffing news, I’d like to congratulate
Kiley Cunningham on successfully
obtaining the Principal position at
Longford Primary School. Kiley has
made a significant contribution to our
college over the past five years, and
will be sorely missed by both students,
parents and staff alike. We wish her all
the best, and look forward to hearing
of the great things we know she will
achieve at Longford Primary.
As you may be aware, “Challenging
Learning” is a significant focus for
our college. This broad concept
encompasses the Growth Mindset
philosophy we introduced last year;
we know that students who truly
believe they can learn and get
smarter (as is supported by the
scientific evidence), will do better in
just about all aspects of schooling.
Challenging Learning extends this
philosophy further to ensure we not
only teach our students traditional
facts and knowledge, but we also
teach attitudes and skills needed to
be lifelong learners. These include
things like persistence, resilience,
organisation and critical thinking.
On Monday 20th June we will have a
school closure day where all
teachers will hear from international
expert on Challenging Learning,
James Nottingham. We look
forward the learning this day will
bring, and the opportunities to
utilize it in the classroom with our
students. For more information, feel
free to visit our website.

Sub-School News PROM Year 11 & 12
Senior School Prom
A small, but dedicated committee have been
busily planning the Senior School Prom. The prom this
year will be held on the 10th of June, at the Maffra
Memorial Hall and the theme is Casino. Tickets are
available at the office for $15.
Absences
SACs - Just a reminder that if students have missed any
School Assessed Coursework session/s they will need to
obtain either a medical or statutory declaration. These
should be given to their Year Level Co-ordinator or Kath
Shepheard. All students who miss a SAC are expected to
attend SAC catch-up on the following Thursday after
school.
Home Study
A reminder that all students are expected to be here
before the first bell on each day – even if they have a
study session in the morning. Home study permission
only applies to sessions 3 and 4. Briefing is very
important, and Year 12s must be at school for their study
session on Tuesday mornings.
Year 12 Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent-Teacher interviews for year 12 students will be
happening in week 4, Term 3. This provides both
students and parents to have a discussion with staff
before exam revision.
Exam Revision for Unit 3
There is a considerable about of information on portal in
regards to unit 3 revision sessions. These are a great
opportunity for students to revise the topics learnt this
semester. Students wishing to attend the Access
Monash Lectures, for which they receive a discount
should sign up next week.
Uniform
Just a reminder that all students need to be incorrect
uniform. We understand that at times there are
circumstances that prevent students from being in
correct uniform. On these rare occasions can you please
make sure that your son/daughter brings a note.
Year 10 Matters
The semester one 10C2 students had the
opportunity of completing work experience
during the last week of term 1. The
evaluation and feedback which we have
received have been very positive. We congratulate the
students on their excellent preparation and attitude
whilst on work experience.
Those students who are not venturing to Darwin during
the final week of term have another opportunity to
participate in work experience. Such experiences are
invaluable and help students gain insights into possible
future careers. Students have been reminded during Year
10 assemblies this term and all documentation is
required to be submitted to either Ms Clancy or Ms
Burgess by Friday 27th May.
As well as having the opportunity to complete work
experience, the students have also participated in mock
interviews. In preparation for their interviews, the
students had to submit an updated resume, covering
letter, address 3 set questions and dress appropriately
for the occasions.
We would like to thank David Ward and Joe Baldacchino
(AGA), Tony Wallace (Rotafab), Nathan Smith (Duart’s),
Kim Kell (Victoria Police), Rylie Evers (APM), John Bodey
(DPI), Brad Evans (545 Primary School Sale) as well as Mr
Hogan, Ms Ray, Cath Macdonald and Don Veale.
Once again the feedback we received from our
interviewers, regarding the students preparation and
ability to address the questions and communicate in an
adult manner, was very favourable.

Year 10 Federation University Trip
On Friday 13th May Ms Stone and I accompanied the
10C2 students to Federation University for a day where
students experienced life at a University campus. For
those who did not wish to go to university it was a
valuable day as many of the Federation Training courses
take place at this venue.
Students participated in a Great Race to familiarise
themselves with the University campus, obtained
information on different courses, had the opportunity to
ask current students questions relating to uni life and
learnt about their brain and study techniques.
First Aid News STUDENTS WITH ASTHMA:
Just a reminder to parents with students who
have asthma that the Department of
Education and Early Childhood Development
(DEECD) policy requires that every student with asthma
attending the school should have a written Asthma
Action Plan, completed and signed by the child’s medical
practitioner, this plan will help your child to participate
fully in school activities safely. If your child has an
Asthma Action Plan could you please provide a copy to
the school?
We have emergency asthma first aid medication to be
used as a backup for when students may not have their
own puffer and spacer with them at the time, but ask
that Parents/Guardians ensure their children have an
adequate supply of appropriate asthma medication
(including a spacer).
It is vital that staff know what to do for your child in an
asthma emergency. With this in mind, it is
extremely important that we have an up to date asthma
action plan and current contact details for parents and
guardians. It is also very important that you provide the
school with a number of emergency contacts.

GENETECH: Gene Technologies @
GTAC
A small group of Year 8 students visited the laboratories
at the Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC) in
Melbourne this May to learn about new technologies in
DNA.
During the workshop they:
investigated the inheritance of the genetically
inherited disease, Achondroplasia.
They used gel electrophoresis to determine if an
unborn baby will have the disorder.
used different types of microscopes (light,
fluorescence, scanning electron microscopes) to
learn about blood disorders, cancer, ecosystems
and mosquito populations.
Use spectrophotometers to analyse whey
protein concentrations in milk. They investigated
which cows would enhance milk quantity and
quality by performing chemical tests on the milk.
The students also visited Melbourne University for lunch
and learnt about the different types of careers involving
Science and Technology.
Our Year 8 students worked with other schools from
around Victoria and represented the college to a very
high standard. They should be commended for having a
go (including battling the early morning public transport)
and for their excellent behaviour.

Sport
Badminton
On the 26th of May, 3 intermediate teams
and one composite team of footballers went to Yarram
to compete against other schools in the Wellington Shire
District. There was an A and a B girls team who both
went up against Sale College. The A team were able to
win against Sale College while the B team lost against
them. The Maffra A team won the round and will move
on to the next round which takes place in Morwell on the
22nd of July.
While the boys had 4 teams to play against, they came
second. They will most likely go through to the next
round as the winning team was made up of boys from
Maffra Secondary College and other schools, therefore
not a valid team to go on.
By Amy Dunn, Shirley McLean, Josie Elliott and Carly Einsedel.
Football
Our senior girls football team played two hard-fought
games.
We were able to take the win against Sale Secondary
College thanks to some awesome work in the forward
line by Sheree May and Kaila Goodwin. Megan Maxfield
was finding the ball all over the ground, and Alex Gallatly
was clearing the packs effortlessly.
Final scores 4-3-27 to 0-2-2.
Our second game saw us up against a polished Lavalla
outfit. Despite working hard all game, the girls were
unable to get much of the footy. Amy Dunn was terrific
keeping us in the contest most of the game. Georgia
Collins was able to shut down some of their best players,
and Laura Davis and Deanna McQuillen tackled
ferociously. Tammy Shanks, Melissa Ryan and Josie Elliot
were also instrumental in moving the ball forward.
Well done to all the girls
for their excellent
sportsmanship, and special
thanks to ‘Coach Jamo’ for
leading the girls well.

The day began with a “gaiter race” to see which team could
work together to get their gaiters on in the shortest time.
Photographing insects with John Caldow;
planting indigenous plant species; identifying
birds with Monty.
SUSTAINABILITY On Friday 22nd April, the launch of the first phase
of the Trailblazers project was held at the Rail
Trail between Maffra and Stratford. This project involved
a collaboration between Christine Richards from the
Gippsland Plains Rail Trail Committee, Carmen Lee from
Landcare, and students and staff at MSC, and was
funded by a Local Landscape Enhancement grant from
the Victorian State Government.
The day began with 31 Year 7 students arriving at the
trail for an exciting day of competition. The students
broke up into six teams, and moved between different
stations along the trail, earning points at each station. At
one station, they worked with Erin Nowak from BugBlitz,
and used geocache technology to find and then identify
bones of different species; at other stations, the students
identified as many species of birds and insects as
possible, working with teacher David Montague and
John Caldow from BugBlitz. At the “Planting” station,
students learned about plants indigenous to the area
and how to plant them, and then raced to plant as many
as possible. At the “History” station, the “mystery object”
activity asked students to guess the use of different
artefacts found along the trail. The station leader
awarded the team points for skills and teamwork at the
end of each activity, and the winning team was
presented with a certificate and a $30 iTunes voucher.
Students hone their historical skills, working with
Christine Richards to identify the use of some “mystery
objects” found along the trail.

At lunch time, the
launch began. The
Year 7s gathered at
the original Briagolong
branch line turn-off,
where our VCAL
students prepared,
served and enjoyed a
barbecue lunch for
staff, students and
members of the
community who had
joined us to celebrate
our achievements. The
launch opened with
local musician Gary
Rose from the
Briagolong Bush Band
performing “Last Train to Briagolong.” Mayor Darren
McCubbin was MC for the event and there were
speeches by local politician Tim Bull and Helen Hoppner,
who is the chair of the Rail Trail Committee. Year 9
student Michael Airey, who worked on the historical
signs, spoke about the project and the signs were
unveiled. Certificates were presented to the students
who contributed to the project so far. We hope that this
will be just the beginning of an ongoing collaboration
that will teach our students about the environmental and
historical uniqueness of their local area, and that they
can make an active contribution to their community.
So, take your bike or walking shoes, and head out to the
Maffra-Stratford section of the Rail Trail. The following
features of the trail show the value of our students, staff
and community collaborating together: The restored green seat, which was made by
Shay McCalman and James Ronalds, supervised
by VCAL teacher Carl Johnson;
The redgum timber seat, which was designed
and constructed by James Ronalds, Bailey
Escreet, Sam Nicholson and supervised by Greg
Gilbert;
Interpretive signs, which detail the history of the
Flax Mill, Powerscourt Homestead, the
Briagolong branch-line turn-off, the Stratford
elephant and the lady who drowned in the
floods, by Michael Airey, Adelle O’Doherty, Liam
Ahchow and Indy Keith, and supervised by
librarian Jacinta Fleming (to be installed very
soon);
The distance markers, which were completed by
VCAL teacher Greg Gilbert;
Plantings near the DEPI office, by VCAL students
and the Green Army, supervised by teachers
Veronica Hudson and Sue Clancy;
The partnership sign, explaining the project and
the partnership between the Maffra and District
Landcare Network, Maffra Secondary College,
Wellington Shire Council and the Gippsland
Plains Rail Trail Committee, completed by
Christine Richards.
A special thank you to the staff who gave their time to
make the day such a success: Sue Clancy, Veronica
Hudson, Jacinta Fleming, Kylie Lambert, David
Montague, and Tim Liddell. The VCAL students who
helped set up and pack up so efficiently, in particular
James Ronalds, Dennis Keck, Shay McCalman, and
Andrew McKenzie, were also integral to the success of
the day.

Careers
WHY RESEARCH CAREERS? Researching ideas for
careers and training while at school is becoming
increasingly important. With automation of many
jobs developing rapidly, many unskilled jobs (and some
skilled jobs as well) are rapidly disappearing. A
willingness to obtain qualifications and to re-train
when necessary will be VITAL for a young person’s
future. It is believed that at least Certificate III level
qualifications (preferably higher) will be essential to
obtain on-going work (ie Certificate IV, Diplomas,
Advanced Diplomas and Degrees).
Resilience, determination, and education will be
essential to remain employed.
Remember too, the importance of Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math’s (STEM) careers. These are
some of the areas offering growth and opportunity in
employment. Research shows that 75% of the fastest-
growing occupations now require STEM skills, so we
must build a workforce of tech-savvy future employees.
Digital literacy is vital for everyone. The digital revolution
has led to many new jobs and new ones will develop that
we have never begun to think of.
An excellent website to check out is
www.joboutlook.gov.au. Here you will find details of
what jobs involve, average salaries, and, perhaps more
importantly, the likelihood of employment growth in
that job.

future employment.
ASPIRE, a well-received and recognised initiative for
domestic undergraduate school leavers which has been operating for two years now, will continue into 2017 and beyond. The program recognises the positive impact that a student has had on their local community. Community engagement and objective school achievement forms a significant part of the assessment criteria of the program, not ATAR scores. Applications for 2017 entry open on shortly on 1 June and close on 31 August. See: www.latrobe.edu.au/aspire. NOTE: The program has special links with the CFA, the Duke of Edinburgh Award and St Johns Ambulance, however, students with many types of community engagement are considered.
WHERE MIGHT A SCIENCE DEGREE TAKE ME?
Are you fascinated by nature? You can discover
more about living things with biology and
environmental science or even biotechnology
where you can learn about everything from farming
to pharmacy products.
Do you want to be at the forefront of technology?
A career in chemistry allows you to test and
produce anything from penicillin to polythene or if
you’d like food for thought consider the potential of
food science.
Are you curious about the universe? Physics looks
at the smallest sub-atomic particles and the forces of
the universe but if you want to explore a new
frontier of science, discover nanotechnology.
Are you intrigued by the potential of numbers?
Mathematics finds patterns and connections and
can help to model systems and develop theories and
formulas while statistics can allow you to predict
trends by using data to make conclusions. If you
fancy yourself as a forecaster, analytics can help
you see preferences and anticipate actions.
If maps and modelling interest you, this could lead
you to a career in surveying. Alternatively, find out
how location has an impact on the way we interact
with world around us with geospatial science.

Year 12 Maffra Secondary College 2016 TEA TOWEL FUNDRAISER
Dear Parent / Carer / Friend, Parents Club is running a Tea Towel Fundraiser! The unique tea towel design is made up of drawings by your children in year 12 and our later years staff at Maffra Secondary College. The drawings are arranged into one commemorative design and screen printed in Royal, onto high quality white tea towels. We chose tea towels to celebrate your child's achievement of completing year 12, they produce a wonderful memento and meaningful gift for parents, relatives and special friends. The tea towels look amazing, are so easy to post and make a fabulous reminder of your child’s later years. ONLY $15 for a limited edition tea towel.Tea towels can be ordered by dropping the order form below with payment to front office in an envelope clearly marked “TEA TOWEL ORDER”. Make sure you don’t miss out! Preserve your child’s year 12 artwork and remember friends and teachers forever! We can’t do it without you - support your children and Maffra Secondary College Parents Club and place your orders
now.
Final orders are due before → 23/6/2016
