1) FESTINIOG RAILWAY Gauge 1’-115/8”
Portmadoc Harbour to Blaenau Ffestiniog opened 1836 as a horse-worked tramway. Steam
locomotives and passenger trains from 1863. Closed 1939 (passengers), 1946 (goods). Re-
opened as a tourist railway from 1954, running from Portmadoc as far as Tan-y-Grisiau in
1978, partly on a new route.

was closed 1930. Main route closed throughout 1956.

Originally 3’ gauge “Tremadoc Tramway” built before 1845 from Portmadoc to
Tremadoc. Extended 1856-7 to Gorseddau Quarries. Became GJ&PR 1872. Gorseddau
line then closed. Main line Portmadoc to Ynys-y-Pandy Mill regauged to 2’ in 1875 and
extended to Prince of Wales Slate Quarry and Cwm Dwyfawr Copper Mine. Closed
throughout by 1894.

5) CROESOR TRAMWAY
Opened 1864. 2’ gauge. Portmadoc to Croesor and Rhosydd slate quarries. Section
Portmadoc-Carreg Hylldrem incorporated into Welsh Highland Railway 1922 and
reconstructed. Remainder of tramway largely out of use by 1936 though most track
remained in situ until about 1968. Five inclined planes.

6) THE ANGLESEA RAILWAY
Proposed 1812. Length seven miles from collieries at Penrhynmaur near Holland Arms to
