The Lighting Plan
• Using the plan of the number 1 LX Bar:– Where will the bar hang?– How many of what type of instrument do you need?– How many dimmer channels will you require?– How many control channels are required?
• It is ten metres from the end of the bar to the dimmer outlets , and the dimmer outlets are on a fly-floor 10 metres above stage level. The bars are 12 metres long and units 1 and 20 at the ends of the bars
– How many and of what length multicores are required?– Is there a way of reducing the number of multicores used?– Will this require any other equipment?
• Are there any other requirements for this bar?
![Page 3: LET_03A](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052507/55867401d8b42ae16d8b45de/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)

Information & Management
• Two ways of approaching a lighting rig• Throw it together and hop
– Hang luminaire– Run lots of multicore– Sort out patch on the dimmers– Make it all up!
• This will work on small rigs– If nothing goes wrong– Tracing faults– Replugging– Adding units
• All will be difficult without management– As will providing information to others– Hire companies, venues, crew…..
![Page 4: LET_03A](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052507/55867401d8b42ae16d8b45de/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)

Information & Management
• Clearly much better to use proper system• Any number of programmes will help
– Excel, Access– WYSIWYG– Pen and paper!!!
• Useful free programme for up to 75 entries • Lightwright by John McKernon
– http://www.mckernon.com/demodowns.htm
![Page 5: LET_03A](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052507/55867401d8b42ae16d8b45de/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)

Lists
• Whatever programme one used• List the equipment• Useful to work by position
![Page 6: LET_03A](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052507/55867401d8b42ae16d8b45de/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)

6
Lists
• LW can produce a lot of information – more targeted than WYSIWYG• The above is probably the minimum
![Page 7: LET_03A](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052507/55867401d8b42ae16d8b45de/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)

7
Adding Information
• Add the information we know – Channel numbers, Irises, Colour• Highly likely the LD will not care about dimmers, circuits….
![Page 8: LET_03A](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052507/55867401d8b42ae16d8b45de/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)

Channels?
• How many channels do we need??• What amperage?
![Page 9: LET_03A](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052507/55867401d8b42ae16d8b45de/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)

Channels & Circuits
• Need 15 control channels • What does that affect?
![Page 10: LET_03A](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052507/55867401d8b42ae16d8b45de/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)

Channels & Circuits
• So we could cable this bar to 15 dimmers using two multis, three lengths of TRS and a number of grelcos
• However cumbersome system
![Page 11: LET_03A](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052507/55867401d8b42ae16d8b45de/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)

Dimmers
• However, dimmer per instrument is much easier if one has the resources• LW will do all the numbering
– Edit/Renumber
![Page 12: LET_03A](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052507/55867401d8b42ae16d8b45de/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)

Dimmers
• Dimmers allocated– LW will even indicate phases ,– Phase separation might be an issue
![Page 13: LET_03A](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052507/55867401d8b42ae16d8b45de/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)

Cabling/Circuiting
• How can I cable/circuit this bar?• 20 Circuits• 2 x TRS and 3x 6-way multicores
– TRS marked X1 and X2
![Page 14: LET_03A](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052507/55867401d8b42ae16d8b45de/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)

This week
• LW will auto-number circuits
![Page 15: LET_03A](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052507/55867401d8b42ae16d8b45de/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)

15
This week
• Multis marked A/B/C – but could be something else– Clarity is of the essence
• Circuits to be flashed out before rig leaves working height!
![Page 16: LET_03A](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052507/55867401d8b42ae16d8b45de/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
University of Derby School of Arts Design and TechnologyDivision of Electronics & Sound
16
However
• You have now created a whole paperwork system that can provide information to others
– Number of instruments– Cable requirements– Colour call– Multis can be premarked– Racks can be patched before leaving the hire company
• With all the patching done in the virtual world, WYSIWYG can be deployed to programme the console offline.
![Page 17: LET_03A](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052507/55867401d8b42ae16d8b45de/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)

Patching the
Dimmers• Multis will patch to the
rack– What end of the mulicore
do we present to the dimmer rack?
• TRS will plug to separate spider.
![Page 18: LET_03A](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052507/55867401d8b42ae16d8b45de/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)

The Lighting Plan
• What is a production electrician?• What are the responsibilities of the PLX• What tasks does the PLX need to perform ?

The Lighting Plan
• The key is clearly a vital piece of information
• The key/legend provides us with information about the types of instruments we need.
• Two other vital pieces of information in this key
– ??– ??
