Our duties. Legal. Moral. For those of us who work at height fall hazards are a necessary evil. It
also means we have a duty — not just to ourselves, but to others. For
employers it means making the correct provisions for the workforce. For
operatives it means working safely and acting quickly in an emergency.
But that’s only half the story. Because our moral duties are enforced by
our legal ones: the WAH Regulations 2005 and British Standard 8437.
So we need height rescue not just to protect our workforce, but to satisy
the law.

Training.Equipment. Duties fulfilled.Fulfilling your legal and moral duties requires two things: training and
equipment. For height rescue that means selecting appropriate recovery
systems and giving workers the skills to operate them. But because
training and equipment are intimately linked, we believe they should go
hand in hand. So by manufacturing our own equipment and developing
our courses around that equipment, Leading Edge offer the safest,
simplest way to gain adequate rescue provision.

20% face death within10 minutes...After a fall the body goes through several stages of physical distress.
These are a group of conditions known as Suspension Intolerance and
Reflow Syndrome. Their effects can be devastating. So much so in fact
that 20% of all fall casualties are presumed dead within 10 minutes. And
for everyone else? Within the hour.

999?There’s no time to wait! We’ve learnt that fatalities can occur within 10 minutes of a fall. But the
truth is it only takes 5 minutes for irreversible brain damage to occur. So
while it’s an testament to our emergency services that they’re able to
arrive within 8 minutes of being notified, for us that’s already too late. By
being prepared to act immediately you’ll not only save a life, but halt a
lifetime of difficulty and hardship for the casualty and their family.

Live Rescue.Real Experience. An effective rescue saves lives, but it takes real practise. The Rescue
Training Centre is built for that very purpose. And not only can you use
every rescue system and deploy them at floor, waist and head height but
there’s two live edges — that means we can run two groups in tandem,
so you gain twice the time and twice the practise.

Advanced Towers. Effortless Rescue. This is no ordinary tower system. It’s a 7m multi-level, multi-storey hybrid
training tower, reinforced with scaffolding. It’s anchored to the building
and complete with structural fall-arrest anchorage, an overhead i-beam
and a multitude of safe access points. That’s a lot of complexity brought
together for a sole purpose — to make vertical rescue training as simple
and effective as possible.

Vertical Rescue. In a safe, controlled environment.Excavations, lift shafts, confined spaces, man holes... They all mean one
thing in a fall: vertical rescue. You need to act quickly, and you need to
get it right. The problem is it’s nearly impossible to gain sufficient training
on site. But in the Rescue Training Centre we’ve created a controlled
environment. So you can anchor safely to our advanced multi-storey,
twin tower system and master raising and lowering casualties to safety
— with weighted mannequins, winches and descenders.

The height rescue course provides dedicated training for three types of
rescue system. Together they allow the safe recovery of a fall casualty in
any situation using the raising, lowering or combined raising and lowering
methods. But the course is far from generic. You choose which one you
want—or all three—and your training focuses comprehensively on your
chosen method/s, wasting no valuable time on things you’ll never need.
RESCUE METHODS
20
21
HAULRaising Method
When lower floors are obstructed, glazed or high-rise,
the haul system allows an unconscious fall casualty
to be raised back to the area from which they fell.
Though highly effective, its pulling mechanism
requires a minimum of five people to conduct a safe
and speedy recovery.
DESCENTLowering Method
Execute the recovery of a conscious or unconscious
fall casualty by lowering them safely to the ground or
a lower floor. Requiring only one person to operate
makes descent a quick and easy method of rescue,
however it is only suitable for applications where
there are no obstructions or restrictions beneath the
floor from which the casualty fell, i.e. it’s safe to lower!
WINCHRaising & Lowering Method
The winch system combines the benefit of both
haul and descent in one simple device to ensure
maximum safety for all situations. The winch is not
only easy to deploy but requires only one person to
affect a speedy rescue by either lowering or raising
the casualty to safety.

With the Leading Edge Height Rescue Course comes a whole new way
to learn rescue. At its heart is a series of massively hands on practical
exercises and drills — because repeat practice is the key to effective
rescue under pressure. It gives you the confidence to remain calm
and the skills to rig, deploy and operate rescue systems for the swift
recovery of a fall casualty — ensuring yourselves and the casualty are
kept safe from additional risk at all times.

In a Nutshell
26
Your workplace access and egress determines the type of rescue you
can perform. So the course integrates three different yet powerful
rescue method options: Winch, Haul and Descent. Together they enable
recovery from any situation by raising or lowering a casualty to safety.
You choose which method you need to learn — or all three if required!
Pick one and you’ll receive 5 hours of tuition, hyper-focussed on the
rescue techniques associated with your chosen method — and none
of the fluffy stuff that isn’t! Choose all three and you’ll gain an extra
three hours to not only operate additional devices, but discover how to
select the right ones for your scope of work, anchorage configuration,
level of access and personnel — a perfect option for supervisors and
management.
How It Works
27
It only takes five minutes for the onset of suspension intolerance to
change a life forever. Venous pooling, orthostatic intolerance, vascular
shock — learning how these devastating conditions affect a fall casualty
underpins the need for a suitable rescue plan. And that’s where your
theory session culminates. But to begin with we’ll look at some eye-
opening statistics that reveal why we need height rescue and walk you
through the legislation in place to protect those working at height.
We’ll then refamiliarise you with wearing a full body harness and provide
one to each of you to practice donning, with best practice demonstrated
along the way — so you’re safe when it comes to the practical! Finally
we’ll explore the types of rescue equipment available and their uses for
recovery based on their suitability and performance capabilities. This
section also includes the process and frequency of equipment inspection,
as well as anchorage considerations you will commonly encounter.
The rest of the day includes a series of invaluable practical scenarios.
You’ll conduct repeated self and assisted recoveries—in vertical and
horizontal rigged positions—from a variety of fall protection equipment
with full-weight manikins. This gives you total competence with your
chosen rescue system/s. And to test you are able to recover a casualty in
a timely manner, the course rounds off with a 5-minute rescue challenge,
in which you’ll compete—individually or in teams—for the fastest, safest
recovery.

SYSTEMSRescue systems are basic devices that facilitate the recovery of a fall casualty. These are the most economic options if you have limited exposure and are ideal for task specific use.
KITSKits are your total rescue solution. They contain everything you’ll need to conduct rescue in a transportable fast access rescue rucksack. Besides an edge roller that protects your rope and allows the kit to be used for regular practise, the biggest addition is a quick-deploy ladder, which in most cases allows a conscious casualty to perform a fast self-recovery after a fall.
SUITABILITY:
Compatible with all lanyards, intertia
reels and restraint systems.
34
HAUL SYSTEM
By utilizing the force of 5 personnel, the horizontally
rigged haul system manually raises a casualty 3m
in a single pull. Its multi-braid pro-static rope and
Dyneema is edge tested for high impact abrasion and
backed up with twin haul lines to provide dual fall
arrest protection. Breaking load 25kN (2.5T).
