• Leadership can be conceptualised as a (i) series of influencing tools and processes to (ii) improve the health of the population in an economy of (iii) distributed (iv)political and (iv) officer (vi) stakeholders
The Basics
www.hertsdirect.org
The public health task in local areas now means working across different dimensions of time and responsibility
•Which agency, which responsibility?
•Which set of leaders?
•Think through what we can do short term
•Start work on the medium term
•Set the policy framework for the long term
•Build this understanding among partners
•County, District, Parish, NHS, Business and Community Sector working together
www.hertsdirect.org
There are four big leadership tasks
1. Analyse the system and identify problems
2. Build a system wide approach to deal with it
3. Be clear on roles, responsibilities and outcomes
4. Articulate public health contribution across the system
www.hertsdirect.org
• Strengthening leadership becomes an issue of how the problem plays out in terms of person-role fit and organisation-role fit
• Insights from psychology and behavioural sciences
Some key tasks I mentioned in 2011
www.hertsdirect.org
Three key concepts from occupational psychology
1. Person – role fit
2. Person – organisation fit
3. Person – system fit
These now seem to be becoming more salient both in areas with problems and areas with success.
