S.L. MASON’S MISSION STATEMENT:TO ESTABLISH A STRONG EDUCATIONAL
FOUNDATION FOR EACH CHILD THAT INSURES FUTURE ACADEMIC SUCCESS.
DURING THE MONTH OF JANUARY, I
VOLUNTEERED AT S.L. MASON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A FEW TIMES A WEEK FOR 30 MIN- 1 HOUR EACH SESSION. I TOTURED A SECOND GRADE STUDENT TO HELP HER MATH AND ENGLISH SKILLS.
___________ Math Skills
To help her learn Math, we used addition and subtraction flash cards.
We also used a method called the “Grab and Go”. She would grab the higher number and count down or up, depending on the sign.
_____English Skills____
To teach her words on the flash cards, I would hide the second part for her to sound out the first part and then vise versa. We also read together through a second grade reading level book.
Ending my Tutoring At the end of the tutor, I learned how much skill goes into teaching a
young student the basics of math and English. It was very rewarding to see what we had accomplished.

This was no April Fools Joke… Saturday, April 1, 2006
A group of us from VSU Freshman Year Experience got together to washed
cars to raise money for Second Harvest Food Bank.
From 10:30am to 2pm, we washed cars for donations
and raised a little over $150.
Being in the VSU Freshman Year
Experience gave me a chance to
volunteer in the community. In doing
so, I got to have fun, get to know my
classmates, and help out to make the community a
better place.
