216th better routeDear Editor,In response to Bruce Jones suggestion that
we need to add freeway access at 208th Street[Highway access needed, June 11] to easecongestion at 200th Street. While I understand that there is a need for
more freeway access due to the atrocious designof the 200th Street interchange, I must arguewith the idea of adding on-ramps and off-rampsto 208th Street. Those of us who need only toget across Highway 1, not access it, need to beable to do so without fighting and expandingthe line-up to get onto the freeway. I suggest awhole new overpass with a proper cloverleafsystem (not traffic lights!) at 216th would be afar better option and leave the fly-over at 208th.

Dear Editor,I am writing in
response to the letteron vaccination byJennifer MacQueen.I, myself, have fivechildren with autism.[Bigger picturemissing in debate overvaccination June 11]The oldest two weremedically confirmedinjured by vaccines. I,too, have spent muchtime researching thissubject. I believe thatyou too fail to seethe big picture in thisdebate. The debate isnot about the safetyand efficacy of the
vaccine program. Itis about who holdssovereignty overpeoples bodys andwhat can be done tothem. Is sovereign-ty over your bodyheld by you or thestate and, if the statethen to what limit.Historically manysocieties would sac-rifice their childrento their gods for thegreater good. Todaysociety sacrifices theirchildren to the god ofScience for the great-er good.

Dear Editor,As a parent of students who
have attended the LochielU-connect program for a dozenyears, I would like to correct ahuge misconception that wasin the print version of LochielProgram moves to Simonds. This newspaper has char-
acterized the school as placewhere only students who haveanxieties attend. While there are students like
that who attend Lochiel, themajority of students are fromfamilies who choose to havetheir kids learn at home mostof the week for any number ofreasons. For instance, my kids start-
ed their formal education atLochiel, never having been inanother school.
It was a choice we made as afamily because I enjoy spend-ing time with my kids helpingthem learn. There have been families
with kids in competitive ath-letics who like the relativeflexibility of the program, andothers whose kids are brightand enjoy the ability to workat the level their kids are atwhile still spending time withtheir age cohort.Others just like the ability
to work quickly and be doneschool by noon so they cango off on field trips or studynature or any number of otheractivities.I challenge the reporter to get
to know some of the students, past and present, from Lochielbefore writing another such
article.She will find students who
do well in science fairs, speechcompetitions and athletics. She will find people who havegone on to get top scholarshipsat universities, run their ownbusinesses or be socially activein Canada or abroad. She willfind students who excel indrama and/or sports. And yes even students with
anxiety, some of whom, after afew years at Lochiel, you mightbe hard pressed to differentiatefrom their peers because theyare no longer anxious.Lochiel is a place where any
student can come and learn, allit takes is commitment on thepart of a parent to help themthrough the learning process.

Dear Anne,Is there a way to
permanently removeweeds from sidewalkcracks, and in-betweenthe street and the side-walk. They are veryhard to get at becausethe crack is so narrow.
Sandy Feng, MapleRidge
Dear Sandy,You can get the best
results by removingas much as you canmanually then dosingthe bits of roots thatremain.
First, for the side-walk weeds that areshallow-rooted, youcould start by pullingthose. For any thatare tap-rooted, youcould get an old, thinkitchen knife (if youdont have one, youcould find one inValue Village or per-haps a thrift store). Ifyou cant get the tap-roots out, try to shredthem in place with theknife. But removing weeds
from anywhere perma-nently is really anelusive dream. Thebest you can hope foris removing them for along time. The dosing options
include salt. This ster-ilizes soil so nothingwill grow for a while. But it needs to beused with care. Thisarea tends to be arainy place and wateris a determined travel-ler. As a result, if your
sidewalk/road cracksare on a slope, the saltwill travel downhilland cause problemsto plants wherever itends up.Water can also leach
any substance in thesoil down to greater
depths and neutralizeits presence in thetop layer of soil. Thismeans that soil whichhas been sterilizedwith salt graduallybecomes more andmore receptive toseeds blowing intothat area.Boiling water is also
a potential weed-killer.Its cheap and easybut accidents with itcould be horrific. Soit shouldnt be usedwhere young childrenor animals are around or older people withpoor balance.Vinegar is another
weed-killer. Ordinarywhite vinegar (acetic
acid) kills top growthbut doesnt touch tap-roots unless youveworked them over firstand shredded themwith something sharp. Then it can work verywell.Horticultural vinegar
is the key ingredientin organic weed-kill-ers. You can find thisin garden centres. Itdoesnt touch deeptaproots either, butis much more effect-ive than householdvinegar. Horticulturalvinegar is strong andneeds to be usedwith respect, but itworks well and theresusually a useful pause
before it leachesaway and weeds get achance to return.Flame weeders run
on small bottles ofpropane. Weeders killtop growth and incin-erate seeds thoughnew seed can stillblow in. But take care:ours burned holes inlandscape fabric undera gravel patio.Dear Anne,I planted a bare root
Damson plum treefour years ago. It looksvery healthy, but it hasnever bloomed. Is thisnormal?
Sharon Lowe,Vancouver
Dear Sharon,
Yes. Its quite nor-mal.It would likely have
been about two yearsold when it arrivedin your garden. Fromthere you would needto wait about four tosix years while yourlittle tree is formingvegetative growth.I have grown dam-
son trees, and they dotake ages to get goingwith blossom anddont be surprised ifthe first two years theblossoms are a barehandful. But once theystart, youll get moreevery year until thetree is covered eachspring.
