Moundsville is located on the western edge of West Virginia along the Ohio River. The town is home to the largest Indian burial mounds in the United States and once had one of the most violent penitentiaries in the country. A once a vibrant town filled with factories and coal mines is now a dwindling town. The city of Moundsville is currently going through a revitalization phase in hopes to bring residents and businesses back to its town. My design for the park uses the concept of narrative design to tell the history of the geology of the surrounding area. To help with the design narrative, I used a series of archetypical spaces that references the area’s history of deep geology. These archetypes include; an allee, a pond, a bog, a forest, a clearing, and an orchard.

5th Street Park is an under-utilized park in the heart of the Fairmont community. Due to the lack of a Parks and Recreation department and lack of funding, the park became abandoned by the community. With the use of grants and private funding, the city wanted to revitalize the park and bring new life back into their community. A nature trail and small creek flows between the two parks, which gives the park a feeling of discontinuity. The design came from the idea of an environmental learning park. The new revitalized park aims to bring the community together as well as to teach their children about their surrounding environment.
