Take a little break while being active.

Feel the history and the culture and take a little break.

1 Shuon-an Ikkyuji TempleShuon-an was established as a Zen training hall. It is also known as “Ikkyu Temple” because Ikkyu Zenshi (the master of Zen) spent his last years here from the age of 63 to his death at 88. The Hojo garden was designed according to the principles of ‘karesansui’ (dry landscape) and is very calming to look at.Place: 102 TakigisatonouchiTime: 9:00-17:00Fare: Adult 500 yen, Child 250 yenAccess: A 20-minute walk from Kintetsu Shin-Tanabe Station or JR Kyotanabe Station☎0774-62-0193

2 Mt. KannabiIn Japanese, ‘Mt. Kannabi’ is also written with the first Chinese character meaning “God” instead of “sweet,” which is the more common option (both can be pronounced “kan.”) The name of the mountain means “the place where God resides,” and it was so named because the mountain peak is 221m above sea level. On a fine day, visitors can see Kyoto clearly from the observatory. When ancient Kyoto was first being built, a line was drawn between Mt. Kannabi, which was designated as the city’s southern boundary, and Mt. Funaoka, in the north, to decide where the central point of the city should lie, after which Daigokuden Hall and Suzaku-oji Street were built.

3 Kannonji TempleKannonji Temple is home to the Eleven-Faced Kannon statue, a national treasure and known for its gentle expression, deftly sculpted in the style of the Tempyo Period (724-794). Visitors are able to see the details of the carving up close as the statue, which is life sized, is not encased in glass. Outside the temple, visitors may gaze upon a row of cherry blossom trees and a field of vibrant yellow rapeseed in spring, whilst in autumn the leaves turn red, providing a stunning backdrop for the temple.Place: 13 Fugenji ShimodaimonTime: 9:00-17:00Fare: 400 yenAccess: A 30-minute walk from JR/Kintetsu Miyamaki Station☎:0774-62-0668

4 Juhoji TempleThis temple is home to the Eleven-Faced, One Thousand-Handed, and One Thousand-Eyed Kannon statue. The statue is one of Japan’s “Three Great Masterpieces” and it really does have one thousand perfectly carved hands. The most striking thing about the statue is that the expression of the Kannon changes from peaceful to wary depending on the light.Place: 20 Miyamaki TounoshimaTime: 9:00-17:00 (reservation required by the day before)Fare: 300 yenAccess: A 5-minute walk from JR/Kintetsu Miyamaki Station☎:0774-65-3422

5 Isu-1 Race (office chair race)This unusual race is done using regular office chairs, which contestants sit on and wheel along themselves. The race is held every March at the Kirara shopping street. The idea for the race was inspired by the idea of “having a little sit down,” and the race, which was first held in Kyotanabe, has now become so popular that other races are held all around the country. Place: Kirara Shopping Street(at the Kintetsu Shin-Tanabe Station east side)

6 Don’t miss this! Japan Heritage Ino-oka Tea Plantation

The Uji tea culture and production of eight cities, towns, and villages in southern Kyoto Prefecture has been registered as “A Historical Walk Through 800 Years of Japanese Tea” with Japan Heritage, a project founded by the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 2015. The Ino-oka Tea Plantation in Kyotanabe is one of the locations that was chosen; why not take the chance to indulge in a spot of tea before you leave?

7 Cycling RoadA 45km stretch of cycling road, from Arashiyama in Kyoto, to the Izumi-ohashi Bridge in Kizugawa, has been designated as the Kyoto-Yawata-Kizu Cycling Road, exclusively for bicycles and pedestrians. The route is regularly maintained, and even has a charming boat-shaped bench for resting at the north side of the Tamamizu Bridge.

8 Fugenji TempleFureai-no-Eki

The largest morning market in Kyotanabe, you can purchase farm produce and tea grown locally in the city. The area will also serve as the base for the Tour of Japan. Why not buy some delicious fresh vegetables for later?Place: 62 Odagaito, FugenjiDate and Time: Tue, Wed, Thu, Sat, Sun 08:00-15:00☎:0774-62-4250

Don’t miss this! Tour of JapanDon’t miss this! Tour of JapanThe Japanese version of the Tour de France, “Tour of Japan,” is Japan’s top cycle road race. In 2016, in addition to the seven stages of previous years, there will also be a “Kyoto Stage” and approximately 100 professional cyclists from both Japan and overseas will cycle through Kyotanabe and Seika.

Ikkyu Goods: Kyotanabe’s brand of locally sourced, high quality goods
