Definition of KWL Model
• Created to enhance reading comprehension in content areas.
• All three parts of the model focus on a different aspect of student’s individual learning style.
• KWL model is also used as an organizational tool because it allows student to identify known information about a given subject.

Purpose of the KWLKWL chart presents a before-during-after
strategy for students in helping with comprehension strategies:
• Students can get started by brainstorming any prior knowledge they may have on the topic which then helps them develop a curiosity on the subject and gets them interested in learning more about it.
• This chart also helps them decide what they would like to learn about the subject which gives them the self motivation to read and make up their own questions.
• It helps with self-monitoring of comprehension because it allows them to identify what they understood.
• This chart also gives an opportunity for students to expand on their ideas and formulate new ones.

Breaking the Model Down…

-Example: Topic=Transportation K Column: The student said that

transportation.

Breaking the Model Down…
Second Column of KWL Model= W●What the students want to know
-Example: The students want to know how many different types of
transportation there are. They also want to know when the first type of transportation was discovered.

Breaking the Model Down…
Third Column of KWL Model= L●What the student has learned●The students will be given time to research about their topic and questions they had pertaining to the topic. They will then write what they have learned in this column.

Assessment
1. The teacher can observe how well the students participated in the learning activities.
2. The teacher can assess their learning of the content-their understanding of the ideas in the text.
3. The teacher can assess the student's thinking-in this case their ability to take a position and support it with evidence.

Reflections
The K-W-L method is a find way to structure a lesson that covers an informational topic. It is not recommended for work of fiction. In cases where students do not prossess much background knowledge about a topic, the K-W-L can be preceded by an Advance Organizer, as we did in this lesson.
