Knowledge organization
• B. Sosińska-Kalata: Research and practice area related to
tools preparation, which aim is to provide quick and
efficient access to knowledge resources;
• KOS: structures, tools and methods used to knowledge
organization in various types of environments and for a
variety of specific objectives.

KOS by B. Hjørland
• Two approaches to KOS:
• Narrow interpretation, typical for information science
(document description, indexing and classification);
• Broader interpretation, meaning social division of
mental labour, where KOS are associated with
production and distribution of „knowledge”, organization
of publications, traditions, disciplines and people in
different cultures.

Conclusions
• PKO model (Publishing as KO) allows simultaneous
presentation of knowledge and publishing processes;
• It uses results of previous works in both directions;
• A comprehensive view on the processes allows the
terminology rearrangement;
• The model can be used to investigate and explain the
phenomena associated with scientific publishing (and
more broadly – with communicating), including its
transformation into an electronic form.
