TOP KITCHEN DESIGN TRENDS FOR KBIS 2013
Trend spotting is equal parts art, science, and psychology, e.g., being aware of regional design tastes, impact of domestic and international affairs, influence of specific marketplace sectors, influence of generational groups, online movements by the public at large, consensus of design professionals, editors and many other factors.
Keeping on top of "what's happening" in the world of kitchen design is a daily activity for me. My information comes from a wide variety of sources, and attending numerous trade shows is a vital part of formulating my interpretation as to where the direction of kitchen design is headed.
TOP KITCHEN DESIGN TRENDS FOR KBIS 2013
Page 2Trends are NOT, to any good designer, the be-all, end-all path to follow in order to produce a good and creative design.
In fact, a designer should be somewhat wary of trends yet at the same time be open to the discovery of new, exciting products and design concepts to enhance aesthetics and function in our clients' homes.
The thoughtful and intelligent use of carefully selected trends can create an important balance which has the best shot of becoming a timeless design.
All that said, it sure does feel like this is the year of the "practical kitchen"...

Being an avid photographer for decades, I could not resist sharing a few images of New Orleans which follow. One of the most inspiring places to visit, it's the perfect backdrop to seek and find design inspiration!
For other interesting perspectives on KBIS, take a look at the NOLA BlogTour posts at Modenus.

POTENTIAL PLANS UNDER CONSIDERATION TO SUIT THE SPACEDESIGNED BY SUSAN SERRA
This floorplan, while not designed to maximize cabinetry, gives equal weight to aesthetics, an active social lifestyle, and a bit of a "living room" feeling
Separate and multiple work stations along with an oversized dining/social area encourages enhanced "living" in the kitchen
For a modern, casual lifestyle, design in a decorative layer, in this case inspired by Scandinavian design, which allows for occasional change of color, artwork, decorative accessories
Bornholm Kitchen
In this kitchen, sustainability means using vintage pieces, low VOC paints, an oil finish on cabinetry, made in USA, which enables it to be easily and completely renewed 5 months, 5 years or 20 years down the road to be "as new"BORNHOLM KITCHEN cabinetry
Visual and tactile warmth is brought into this design via a casual collection of long loved items, vintage pieces, supple materials and furnishings of fine quality to be enjoyed over many yearsRugs by Scandinavian Made
Sometimes one may want to display more decorative pieces in the kitchen and other times one may wish to live in a more minimalist environment. Change is good, old and new things are good companions which nudge a design in one direction or another
Neutrals often make an easy foundation in the kitchen on which to build. Flooring on bottom right image is an example of the stunning floors from Dinesen, available everywhere
As this kitchen was designed for baby boomers, we know they are not going into retirement willingly. That said, helpful universal design features are welcome, such as lifts, easy grips in cabinetry, lots of lighting, and easy to clean surfaces.

GenX Kitchen:
-Gen Xers are the 52 million people born between 1965 and 1981 (mid 30's - early 50's) juggling raising young children simultaneously with growing their businesses at the same time. (entering their peak earning years)
-Kitchen is the hub of their home and want an open and fully integrated kitchen/living space that is flexible and multi-functional for growing family.
-Personalization is high on their priority list and are attracted to a more transitional design sensibility.
ANDIE DAY
Thoughtful design used to stay young through body (universal design principles) and mind (coastal, couture, euro design, etc. whatever it is that fills a client's senses)
● Does NOT have to be institutional looking at all● Benefits: reducing/eliminating household risks allow
homeowner to spend more time to improve health via exercise & diet, quality time with family/friends, and other lifestyle goals.
● Repeatedly proven that homes completed with thoughtful design elements and beautiful FF&E, will typically sell in advance of other homes in the same region at the same price. May garner a higher asking pricing depending upon the market. Pays a quality lifestyle forward. Ripple effect.
