Harris Gaitatzis fired a brace in two first half minutes to lead Rockdale City Suns to a 2-0
victory over Blacktown City at Lily’s Football Centre on Saturday evening.
Rockdale’s mercurial attacker fired home from the edge of the box midway through the first half and coolly dispatched a penalty kick 64 seconds later as Paul Reid’s side established an unassailable two-goal advantage in the first half.
That damage proved terminal for Blacktown City, who were rocked by the visitors’ quick-fire double and were unable to match Rockdale’s intensity throughout the contest.
Mark Crittenden’s men have been among the benchmark outfits of the NPL NSW in recent years, but there will be plenty for the hosts to rue after concluding their campaign convincingly beaten on home soil.
It was the second straight season City had hosted Rockdale at Seven Hills in the first week of the finals, and it yielded a similarly emphatic away victory for the team from Ilinden.
Although the two sides were locked an intense opening period, Rockdale slowly gained the upper hand before breaking the deadlock in the 27th minute.
Gaitatzis took advantage of some lacklustre defending from a throw in to fire the visitors in front, and when Alec Urosevski was bundled over by Yianni Spyrakis a minute later, the Rockdale attacker doubled the advantage from the spot.
The loss of Charles Mendy and injuries sustained Danny Choi and Mitch Mallia has seen City struggle for attacking rewards throughout the second half of the season.
They’ve scored just 10 goals in their last 12 fixtures, and the Seven Hills outfit ran into the same frustrations again the second half, despite stepping up their efforts considerably from the opening 45 minutes.
Daniel Araujo, Giorgio Speranza and Danny Choi all saw their attempts gathered by Rockdale gloveman Ante Covic.
In the end it was comfortable for Rockdale – who twice struck the crossbar through Aleksandar Canak and Gaitatzis as the Suns secured a date with APIA Leichhardt Tigers next weekend.
Rockdale’s daring approach to rattle Blacktown early paid dividends, according to victorious coach Paul Reid, who said his side are gaining the discipline needed to become a genuine championship contender.
“I think sometimes we’re a team who needs to learn when to press and that’s sometimes why we concede so many goals,” he said.
“When we’ve come up against Blacktown in recent years there’s been goals galore, it’s been end to end and they’re are the sort of team that like that.
“We had to adjust a bit tonight to not make the game like that because they’ve got very good players in attack and if you give them too much space they can punish you.
“We stuck to a game plan tonight and it really did work. The boys put in a great shift and all credit to them because they deserve it.”

NPLNSW.COM.AU FIRST GRADE MATCH PREVIEW
There are no more second chances for APIA Leichhardt Tigers as they host Rockdale City Suns
this Saturday.
APIA has hit a rough patch of form at the wrong time suffering their second straight loss in as many weeks last weekend against Sydney United 58.
They will be desperate to get their Championship hopes back on track against a resurgent Rockdale City Suns who shocked Blacktown City in the Elimination Semi-final.
With their opposition flying high after a big win, APIA’s challenge will be to rediscover the magic which made them the record highest scoring attack in league history and deliver a major bounce back performance.
one of the biggest issues facing Tigers coach Billy McColl is fatigue with his side backing up from 120 minutes against United 58 and a midweek FFA Cup clash against Melbourne Victory.
APIA’s roster is being stretched with players battling fatigue and niggling injuries.
Franco Parisi was one of the stand out performers in week one of the finals displaying incredible endurance and composure.
A lack of real striking options is becoming apparent at Lambert Park with the departure of Jordan Murray proving to be more difficult to cover than first thought.
Their opponents Rockdale will be hoping to make it back to back finals wins and will surely follow a similar high tempo approach as what they used against Blacktown.
Harris Gaitatzis struck two goals in two minutes just after the interval last week and the attacking midfielder will once again play a key role in Rockdale’s attack.
Alec Urosevski and Bai Antoniou are two other dangerous operators APIA’s defence should keep an eye on.
How Rockdale’s defence holds up is the biggest question mark around the visitors leading into the clash.
APIA has had Rockdale’s measure this season with two comprehensive wins against the Suns in their two league meetings so far.
In round five APIA cruised to a 5-0 thrashing of Rockdale at Ilinden Sports Centre before defeating them again 4-1 in Round 16 at Lambert Park.
While Rockdale has struggled against the Tigers this season come finals time it all goes out the window.
Expect an enthralling contest with both teams determined to keep their season and Championship hopes alive.

#NPLNSWTEAM LISTS - U20’S
U20’S MATCH PREVIEWIt wasn’t meant to be like this for 2017 double
winners Sutherland Sharks.
After starting the season on fire and looking great chances of securing back to back trophy wins, Sutherland are now one loss away from elimination.
The Sharks have not enjoyed a happy end to the season with a combination of misfortune and poor results seeing the side win just two out of 10 fixtures.
Their latest defeat – a crushing 5-0 defeat to Sydney FC at Lily Homes Stadium last Saturday – was a reflection of the form the Sharks are in at the moment, and the massive effort that will be required to stop an in-form Sydney United 58 team on Saturday.
United 58 have a great chance to put the final nail in the coffin of the Sharks outfit at Lambert Park. In contrast to Sutherland’s poor run of results, the Reds have ended the campaign and entered the finals series as the competition’s in-form side.
They racked up their fourth consecutive victory in a comfortable 3-0 win over Wollongong in last
Saturday’s elimination final. It was also their fourth game in a row without conceding, and the difference in confidence between these two sides now compared to the start of the campaign is staggering.
But the high-pressure environment of finals football may just sit more comfortably with Sutherland, despite their steady decline. It is now well and truly last chance saloon for the 2017 winners, who will be doing everything they can to remedy the heavy defeat at the hands of Sydney FC on Saturday and keep their title defence alive.

NPLNSW.COM.AU TEAM LISTS - U18’S
U18’S MATCH PREVIEW
In a battle for survival, Blacktown City will face off against a resurgent Manly United on Saturday
afternoon.
Blacktown City FC last weekend proved to be a tough day at the office.
Despite finishing on top of their opponents, the Rockdale City Suns, in the Preliminary Final, 120 minutes of football later saw neither side find the back of the net, seeing the match needing to be decided by the cruellest of determinations, penalties. With Rockdale emerging victorious with five penalties to Blacktown’s four, the Western Sydney side find themselves in the battle of their season this weekend.
While for Manly United, they will be coming into this fixture with a spring in their step after defeating the Marconi Stallions in their elimination final 1 – 0, despite neither of the sides top goal scorers lining up for the Manly team.
What can we expect from this fixture? Nothing less than high intensity football, that is certain.
Manly United have struggled with consistency towards the end of their season campaign, which will certainly be a key element which Blacktown will hope to capitalise on, especially considering the variance in the final positioning for both sides at the seasons end.
Although for Blacktown last weekend’s efforts would certainly see the side needing to dig deep for both physical and mental strength coming into this fixture.
