OBSTACLES
The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in
common in today’s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their
ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are “[h]ard
of face and obstinate of heart” (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has
been given a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is
unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that
“[he] was amazed at their lack of faith” (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes en-
counter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we expe-
rience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul
encourage us today: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made per-
fect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

“They said, ‘Where did this man get all
this? What kind of wisdom has been given him?’” When a person demonstrates unusual intelligence or
wisdom, we ask, “Where did they get all that?” And
we may be wondering, “Why them and not me?” We
tend to ignore the possibility that such people are not
only gifted with above average intellect, but that they
have an open mind and heart to the truth of the
realities they observe and recognize new possibilities
and the need to change how we think and
live. Knowledge is the intellectual ability to
understand the world in which we live. Wisdom is
the choice to discern the truth and implications of that
knowledge. Knowledge is knowing how to build an
atomic bomb. Wisdom is understanding why it
should not be used. It is the wisdom of Jesus, not his
intelligence, that amazed the people of the small
village of Nazareth. Jesus observed the world in
which he lived and realized the need for change in the
way we treat one another and our world. That is
wisdom. Jesus was not given wisdom. He chose to
be wise. Jesus calls us to be wise. What do we
choose?

6 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018
Today’s readings introduce Jesus as a prophet and explain how prophets and other
messengers from God inevitably suffer rejection. The readings teach us that
Christianity is not a religion for those who seek recognition, success or power. The
first reading from the book of the prophet Ezekiel is part of the story of Ezekiel's call
to be a prophet. It tells us that rejection and persecution were the fate of most of the
Old Testament prophets including Ezekiel. The second reading from St. Paul's second letter to the
Corinthians explains how it makes sense that the prophets and other messengers of God encounter rejection.
Paul, an apostle rather than a prophet, speaks of the difficulties of his own vocation. He says that in spite of
the revelations given to him, God has given him a share in Christ’s suffering from a chronic illness so that
he may glory in God’s power and grace. But by cooperating with the grace of God Paul was able to rise
above his own weakness and disability in successfully preaching the word of God. Today's gospel passage
(Mark 6:1-6), shows how people of Jesus' hometown Nazareth did not accept him because they knew him
and his family. Besides, they misunderstood his messianic claim and rejected him, prompting Jesus to
remark amusingly, "No prophet is without honor except in his own country.” The limited expectations of his
own people explain how Jesus was prevented from doing any mighty deeds in his home town. Jesus "was
not able to perform any mighty deed because of their lack of faith."
Let us face rejection with prophetic courage and optimism. The story of Jesus' rejection in his own town is a
story that we can identify with, because it is a story that has happened to most of us. We might have
experienced the pain of rejection caused by hurts, wounds, betrayal, divorce, abandonment, violated trust,
trauma, neglect or various forms of abuse. What about rejection by those closest to us? Often our friends,
families, or childhood companions fail to listen to, and refuse to accept, the words of grace, love and
encouragement that we offer to them, because they are too familiar with us. So, they are unable to see us as
God's appointed instruments, the agents of God's healing and saving grace. Let us check also the other side
of the coin. How often do we discount God’s agents through prejudice? How often do we fail to see God’s
image in them because of our own hardheartedness? We must realize that God's power is always available
to transform even the most unlikely people.
God is present giving us his message through our nearest and dearest and our neighbors and coworkers.
Since God uses them as His prophets to convey His message to us, it is our duty to acknowledge and honor
them. Let us express our appreciation today for our families – spouses for each other, parents and children
for each other. A word of appreciation for the lady who cooks the dinner, for the neighbor who is always
ready to share our happiness and sorrow, for the friends who have given us time, support and attention
during a recent bereavement or a tragedy in our life – all are our proper responses to God’s messengers of
love and light. Let us not take for granted the presence of God among us as evidenced by the goodness
shown by family and friends. Let us also recognize God’s direction, help and support in our lives through
His words in the Bible and through the advice and examples of others.
