On the day of the show there were in excess of 250 people who visited. Kenneth Nye, Clare Dunderdale, Mike Dunderdale, David Burgess, Ivor Crowson, Alison Chambers, Mick Beeson, Mary Barton and Pat Silverthorne represented the Stamford and District Geological Society. We had a large banner specially made for the show and a large stall set out with lots of information and we also had a fossil preparation area where members of the public could have a go at working on fossils, for which Ivor Crowson was very helpful demonstrating how a fossil should be prepared. Well done Ivor. There was also a find a fossil area where younger folk could dig with a trowel to find a real fossil that they could take home. There was also info on Ketton quarry and fossils from the Blisworth limestone and Blisworth fossils from Ketton. We had a large display board with information on Oxford Clay fossils with Oxford Clay exhibits. Andrew Mortlock had a stall, which was predominantly about quarrying the Oxford Clay, the brick making process past and present, Oxford Clay fossils etc. Other Societies with stalls taking part at the show were: Herefordshire & Worcestershire Earth Heritage Trust Gloucestershire Geology Trust The Geologists Association The Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Lincolnshire Geodiversity Group Leicester Literacy & Philosophical Society, Geology Section The Open University The Open University Geological Society Geoworld Travel Open University Geological Society, East Midlands The Russell Society Geological Society of London-East Midlands Regional Group Nature after Minerals Group East Midlands Geological Society Throughout the day there were lectures in the Council Chambers lecture room.

The Morning Sessions were chaired by Professor Rory Mortimer (president of The Geologists Association) and the afternoon sessions were chaired by Dr Paul Olver (GA Membership Secretary). The lectures were: “Britain’s Beastly Past” – Dr Danielle Shreve of The Royal Holloway-University of London at 10.25-11.25 “Sensational Soft–bodied Silurian Fossils”-Dr David Siveter - University of Leicester-11.45-12.45

“East Greenland-geology, polar bears and climate change” -James Cresswell 13.15-13:45 “The East Midlands- a 650 million year journey” Chris Darmon 14.15-15.15 “The National Forest” includes a look at Charnwood Forest and an introduction to Charnwood Geology- Dr Keith Ambrose (British Geological Survey) 15.45-16.45. The day finished with Professor Rory Mortimer giving a speech to thank every body and especially a big thank you for The Stamford and District Geological Society for all the hard work that we as a society put into the show. The Geologists Association field trips for the East of England Rock and Fossil Show. It was proposed that on Sunday 23rd September 2012 there would be field trips to accompany the East of England Rock and Fossil Show. It was proposed that the field trips would be in the East Midlands area where East Midlands Geology would be present. So the show committee proposed 3 field trips at first: 1 Ketton Quarry- led by Bill Learoyd and Ken Nye. 2 Ashover (Derbyshire) led by Tim Coleman of the East Midlands Geological Society. 3 Charnwood Forest Geology (Bradgate Park, Leicestershire) led by Dr Keith Ambrose of the British Geological Survey It became apparent on the Saturday at the show that there was not enough interest in the Charnwood Forest field trip, so it was cancelled. Those that were left for the Charnwood forest trip would be added onto the Ashover field trip to make up numbers. The Ketton field trip had 16 turn up and it was a great success. There were loads of fossils found and Bill did a great job leading the trip, many thanks to Bill for all your help. I would like to thank everybody from the Stamford and District Geological Society whom helped at the show and the field trips for all your help and support again I thank you all very, very much.

For quarry visits, hard hats, high viz jackets and stout footwear are essential. Many sites now also require safety glasses / goggles. Young people under 16 years of age, attending field meetings, must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. Many quarries have high minimum age restrictions, please check before booking. Members should appreciate that they are responsible for their own safety. The society’s insurance is against 3rd parties.
