A LOT HAPPENED OVER THIS DINNER …… A lot of things can happen over a dinner. This
article is about such happenings. We were in Lonavala for our course get together when Manjusha Lal asked me if I could write an article for the NWWA magazine. I thought, she was “tipsy” and hence ignored her, thinking that she is asking me instead of my wife….. “I and NWWA …no way ….” A little later, I realized I was being served the best of chicken and chapatis were coming steaming hot…….and once again I heard the same voice, now a little closer and sterner, “So when can I have the article…”…I realized the matter was getting serious because she also happened to be an Admiral's wife. We got talking on the possible topic and as the conversation grew, she asked me “why don't you write about your association with the Navy and how it has influenced your wife and son…..” Subsequently, the conversation got disconnected and the evening wound up with no firm commitment on either the writing nor on the topic and I thought all was forgotten.
We returned to Hyderabad, and a couple of days later, as we were driving, a cop stopped us for a routine check, he examined the car documents, found them in order, thanked us and said .. “Sir, your filing is systematic and very good…” I twitched my face and retorted, “.Arey Bhai after all mai Faujijo hoon” It was then our son Varun asked me, “Appa, why do you always use the present tense even after fifteen years of your retirement.”…..I overheard my wife Nirmala say, “I will tell you why, these guys never retire….” And as we got talking, I asked both of them “What influence has the armed forces had on them as son and wife of a naval officer”, they thought for a while and shared the following:
lYou are very process centric. You do very little, but believe in doing it well. That has helped us to focus on quality and not on quantity.
lYou believe in relationships. You keep in touch with people and share your thoughts and feelings. This lightens all of us when we are disturbed.
lYou believe in a systematic life, your life is
a rhythm. But you expect the same from the rest of us. This is bad.
lYou value life, you do not even want to kill an ant, and I have seen you sweep them away. We expect you to change and decide to kill cockroaches at least.
lYou believe in saving from your earnings for a rainy day. This is good for we have never experienced shortage of money in life.
lYou believe in change, your adaptation and success post retirement is an inspiration for both of us.
lYou believe in education. We cannot remember you having said “no” to learning new things any time. That is good.
The next day, I was glued to the internet and the television to know about a major accident on board INS Sindhurakshak in the naval dockyard at Mumbai where reportedly eighteen crew members on duty were presumed dead.
Varun was catching up with his friends in the drawing room. I joined them for about thirty minutes and suddenly one of his friends enquired, “Uncle, are you all right, is something disturbing you?” I gave a wry smile, had my drink and excused myself to the internet.
The following day, on the dinner table, Varun said “Dad, one more learning”, I looked at him, he looked at me, “Yesterday, I understood the meaning of camaraderie and saw what feelings meant, perhaps…. amma was right after all, ….. Men in the armed forces only “hang” their uniform, they never retire…” He smiled, my wife just managed a grin but I could do neither. We had a quiet dinner. Deep within all three wished the Navy the very best…………
Indeed, a lot happened over this dinner……….!!!!!

When I can't hear my heartbeatthe crackling of a shuttlebreaks the eerie silence of the night.A woman in the neighborweaves a tapestry of happiness
And I just feel happyto see the gleam in the eyes.A woman arching on the edge of the weather'd canoecatching a haul to maintainthe balance of life.
Oh! There have been times when I wondered. How unflinching and unwavering her soul must be!Fasting and fighting for our rightssmiling straight into the face of death.
And I have held up my head in pridewhen she taught the world the location of our placewith her hooks and jabs.
You know her with many namesMother, wife, sister or a girlfriend. An ocean of kindness; a sea of loveshielding and protecting you from every storm.
So come one! Come all!Let every woman stand tall.Glory to womanhood! Glory to life!Happy women's day to all.

GLORY TO WOMANHOOD
HUMOUR – IN UNIFORM :: REAL LIFE ANECDOTES
A civilian boy walked a pet Labrador on the road daily, in front of my quarters in the Cantonment. Every time they reached my house, the dog would do the inevitable - raise one of the rear legs at the gate. However, before I could come out, they would be on their way.
Waiting to catch them red-handed, I kept a strict watch and one evening, rushed out of the house while the act was on. I asked the boy to take away the animal and not repeat this in future, with an additional threat of a complaint with the owner of the dog.
The youngster cheekily remarked – “Sir, you can go ahead with your complaint, but before that I just want to inform you that this is Colonel Tyagi's dog.”
On hearing my Commanding Officer's name, I quickly relinquished and went inside, with my tail between my legs!

As a young Doctor in the Army Medical Corps, we were given duties in the “Casualty”, mostly as an under-study to a senior Doctor.
One day, a terrified soldier came in with the complaint of having passed a big worm in his stools; something which he didn't believe was humanly possible. My repeated assurances and a de-worming prescription could not calm him down. It was then I requested my senior to have a look at this patient.
Major Sarkar walked up to the young man and asked him – “You brought out a whitish long tape-like worm, isn't it? That's harmless. Had a snake come out, it could have been 'poisonous'.”
The soldier stood up, his confidence restored, saluted the Major and went off without another word!

During my Internship, one afternoon, I was called by the Commandant of the Military Hospital where I was undergoing the training, for a cup of tea. The Brigadier told me that he found me to be the smartest among all the interns posted and hence wanted to tell this to me in person.
Walking out of the Commandant's office, with my head high and chest swollen with pride, I wanted to share the flattering remark given to me, with the Colonel in-charge of our training. Colonel Sayal complimented me and added with a wink, that I would be summoned by the Commandant again, very soon.
Sure enough, the very next day I again found myself at the Commandant's office – wondering at the accuracy of the Colonel's prediction. The Brigadier walked in and said that since he was going to be busy for the next few hours, I was to take his “staff car” and go to the Railway station to receive his friend, coming by train from Delhi. He also gave me a placard with the gentleman's name, so that that gentleman would recognize me as the person sent by the Brigadier to receive him.
So much for being the smartest!

HEARTFULNESS MEDITATION
There is an abundance of information these days about yoga, meditation, inner well-being and balanced living. People everywhere are searching for ways to improve their lives, reduce stress and find peace and happiness. For this, we don't need complicated routines that are impossible to sustain. We need something simple, easy and effective; something we can do every day in the comfort of our own homes.
Heartfulness Meditation includes simple and practical techniques to relax and calm your mind. In a few minutes, you will learn how to feel the lightness and joy of your true nature. You don't need to know how to meditate or to believe in a particular system or philosophy. The Heartfulness technique shows us to gently turn our attention towards our heart and experience that inner presence for ourselves. Our entire life is led by feelings and inspirations, and that is the role of the heart. And when we manage to listen to the feelings and capture the inspiration that comes from within, we can master our life by listening to the heart again and again. And the whole exercise of fine-tuning the heart with the mind is through this meditation on the heart. That is why we call this process 'Heartfulness' meditation.
Meditation trains our mind to regulate itself and leads us beyond the outer activity into the inner silence of our hearts, where we find ourselves connected to our Divine essence. A balanced state develops in which we are less affected by the ups and downs of everyday life. Our natural capacity for wisdom and right action begins to manifest, allowing us to better prioritize the conflicting demands of life. Sustained practice of meditation allows us to feel a deep and abiding connection with our inner selves, and in turn gives a lasting direction and meaning to our lives. More and more people around the globe are turning to meditation, realizing that in order to reach our full potential as complete, balanced human beings; our inner spiritual longings must be addressed alongside the material demands of daily life.
Meditation helps to detach our self from useless aspects, from superfluous things, diverting our self from the harshness of certain
images, of sounds increasingly louder in terms of decibels and contributing to the refining of our perceptions. By practice of meditation we improve inner poise and get transformed little by little. We develop a sense of detachment and reflective intelligence and thus are able to control, modify and overcome the force of one's gregarious instincts and frenzied individualism throwing up the best and worst in you.
In Heartfulness meditation, our attention is on the heart. We meditate on the idea that there is Divine Light or the Source of Light in the heart. Heartfulness is about feeling lightness and joy of our true nature and experiencing it in our hearts. When we listen to the heart and capture the inspiration that comes from within, we can master our life. This exercise of integrating the heart and the mind is done through meditation on the heart. Some of the benefits of Meditation on the Heart are:
?Increases Energy Levels.
?Removes Fear.
?Increases Clarity in Thought.
?Improves Sensitivity.
?Releases Stress.
?Helps maintain Work –Life Balance.
?Sharpens Intelligence.
?Reduces Resistance to Change.
?Promotes Compassion,
Heartfulness has no association with any religion and is available for anyone over 15 years of age. There are no charges for the practice. We invite all those who are interested to visit the w e b s i t e – w w w. h e a r t f u l n e s s . o r g o r [email protected]
