1000kg/cm2. Total weight (accessories and shell) = 24 tons, wind velocity =

140km/hr.

4. Design a forward feed double effect evaporator to produce 1000kg/hr of aqueous

solution with the 45% solids from a solution containing 10% solids at 25°c.The dry

saturated steam at 240KN/m2 pressure is used as the heating medium and the pressure

in the second effect of this evaporator is 0.20kg/cm2. The heat capacity of solids may

be taken as 0.6 k.cal/kg°c whether it is solid form or in solution and the heat of

solution may be neglected. The solution shows boiling point rise 2° and 6° in the two

effects respectively and the heat transfer coefficients are 1500 and 950k.cal/hr.m2°c in

the two effects respectively. Draw a full sectional elevation of one of these effects if

they are short tube circulation type evaporators. Show all the details. [16]

2) Discuss the factors considered in plant layout and pollution control in a petro chemical

3) (a) Determine the minimum thickness of a heat exchanger tube for steam condensing

on outside of the tube at a pressure of 500 kN/m2. The O.D of the tube is 50 mm.

Tube is a seamless tube with allowable stress of 950 kg/cm2. [8]

(b) A cylindrical tank 1 m in O.D and 3 m in long is made from 5 mm thick plate.

What are the maximum longitudinal and circumferential stresses in wall of the tank

under pressure of 10 atm? Calculate the changes in dimensions and the volume of

the tank. Modulus of elasticity is 2 x 106

kg/cm2 and Poissons ratio is 0.3. [8]

4) Kerosene is heated by a hot fluid in a 1-2 heat exchanger. The kerosene flows through

the tubes at a flow rate of 23 kg/sec and is heated from 21°C to 55°C. The hot fluid

enters the shell at 116°C and leaves at 49°C. The maximum linear velocity of the fluid

through the tube is 2.4m/sec. [8]

material is to be designed for withstanding the same pressure, Calculate the

6. An absorber packed to the height of 5 m, is currently being used to remove a volatile

organic chemical (VOC) pollutant from an exhaust stream. Fifteen cubic meters per

minute of gas at 289°K and 1.013x 105 Pa, containing 5.0 mole % VOC is fed to the

bottom of the absorber tower. By feeding a non-volatile, VOC – free solvent stream

to the top of the tower, the VOC concentration is reduced to 0.3%. The solvent stream

leaves the bottom of the tower containing3.65 mole % VOC. At the pressure and

temperature of the tower, the equilibrium for the VOC – solvent system may be

represented by YA = 0.8XA. The cross section area of the tower is 0.2 m2. Determine

the molar composition of the liquid stream flowing counter current to the gas stream

gallons) and the water temperature remains constant at 20°C, Estimate the horse-

power of the motor required to drive the pump.

Water. The overhead product is to contain 99.99 mole% of Methanol and the bottom
