Changi Airport Group (CAG), Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Singapore Tourism Board (STB) are extending an existing joint partnership for three more years by investing a record S$33.75 million to promote inbound travel to Singapore.
Three main highlights of the tripartite partnership are:
1. Joint marketing efforts to promote Singapore as a stopover or twinning destination to travellers globally, augmenting the previous approach of only targeting travellers from specific long-haul markets such as the uSA and Europe. Twinning refers to travelling to two destinations on one itinerary; an example would be pairing a city destination with a beach getaway.
2. Broadening of a marketing program to woo business and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) visitors.
3. Refreshing the highly popular Free Singapore Tour (FST) to include more authentic experiences curated based on travellers' interests, such as a foodie tour where participants get to sample local Singapore cuisine.
Initially conceived to provide transfer passengers with a free taste of Singapore's offerings, the FST pulled in 59,000 passengers last year, up eight percent from the previous year. As of April 2017, it was rated as one of the top ten tours on travel website TripAdvisor's "Top Tours in Singapore".
CAG’s Chief Executive officer, Mr. Lee Seow Hiang, said, "By collaborating closely with airlines and the travel industry, we can grow passenger segments, such as MICE and transfer passengers. We look forward to continue working with SIA and STB, leveraging on our strengths to pursue sustainable traffic growth in an increasingly competitive landscape."

on 6 March 2017, Royal Caribbean International (RCI), STB and CAG announced that they entered into a second multi-million dollar marketing partnership to promote cruising out of Singapore on Royal Caribbean’s ovation of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas.
The partnership is underpinned by news of the cruise brand’s longest-ever deployment of ships in Singapore from 2017 to 2019.
MORE fLy-CRuISE GuESTS ON ASIA’S LARGEST ShIPS
According to STB, this latest tripartite partnership is projected to generate over S$26 million in tourism dollars. It is expected to bring in around 45,000 overseas fly-cruise guests to Singapore to sail on ovation of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas from March to June 2017. This is in addition to the current 65,000 overseas guests projected to sail on the Mariner of the Seas from october 2016 to March 2017.
The first collaboration between the three parties dated back to August 2015. Projected then to bring in over 170,000 overseas fly-cruise visitors to Singapore over three years, the annual visitor numbers from the first year onboard the Mariner of the Seas surpassed the annual visitor target by over 40 per cent.

CAG-STB-RCI PARTNERShIP To GRoW FLY-CRuISE MARKET
Coupled with the optimistic outlook for cruise tourism in Asia, which witnessed double-digit growth in cruise capacity and became a source market in recent years, this partnership promises significant economic benefits for Singapore.
Mr. Peh Ke-Wei, CAG’s Vice President- Passenger Development, said, “Fly-cruise traffic has performed well in recent years, and Changi Airport seeks to further grow this segment together with our partners, as part of Changi Airport’s aim to grow different passenger segments in Singapore. With these new offerings, visitors to Singapore will have more travel options. Looking ahead, we seek to bring even more new and exciting experiences to our passengers.”
MORE SINGAPORE hOME-PORTED SAILINGS
Together with the partnership announcement, Royal Caribbean also shared news of its longest-ever deployment in Singapore from 2017-2019. For its 2017/18 season, it is lining up a total of 72 sailings on Mariner of the Seas, ovation of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas. This comprises an extended season of 52 sailings on Mariner of the Seas from october 2017 to April 2018, two sailings on ovation of the Seas in April 2018, and 18 sailings on Voyager of the Seas from April to July 2018.
More recently, Royal Caribbean updated that the Mariner of the Seas will be starting her upcoming Southeast Asian season a month earlier, adding 10 roundtrip sailings from Singapore in September 2017. The cruise brand’s presence in the region will also get an additional boost with Voyager of the Seas’ first winter/spring season from Singapore in october 2018, bringing more capacity to the region as she swops places with sister ship Mariner of the Seas.
SINGAPORE’S CRuISE PERfORMANCE IN 2016
In 2016, the cruise industry saw cruise passenger throughput rise by 16 per cent year-on-year to about 1.2 million and welcomed 10 maiden calls. Singapore's appeal as a cruise destination continued to be recognised with numerous industry accolades, including being ranked the Top Cruise Destination at the Seatrade Cruise Awards and the Top Asian Port of Call at the Cruisers' Choice Cruise Critic Awards.

In April 2017, Changi Airport officially crossed the one billion passenger milestone since its opening on 1 July 1981. We take a look at how air travel, airport operations and the passenger experience have evolved over the past 36 years.
Airports used to be very functional – operating as a ‘bus stop’ for passengers before they board a plane. Today, Changi Airport has more than 540 retail, service and F&B outlets, the world’s tallest slide in an airport, gardens, movie theatres and more. For some Singaporeans, even if they are not catching a flight, Changi Airport has become their favourite weekend haunt. Back in 1981, a flight from Singapore to London required four stops en route in that journey. Today, the same journey takes under 14 hours non-stop. The capability
to fly non-stop between Singapore and London was pioneered by the B747-400 and continues today with the A380 Superjumbo and B777-300ERs.
An improvement in aircraft technology, particularly with the B787 Dreamliners and A350s, has allowed aircraft to travel faster and further. For instance, in october, united Airlines will launch non-stop Singapore-Los Angeles flights. With a flight distance of 14,000km, this will be the longest scheduled non-stop flight to or from the uS.
Advancements in aircraft technology also led to the development of new segments, such as long-haul low-cost. Low-cost carriers, originally intended for short-haul leisure travel, have now shifted
toward targeting corporate travel, and expanded into the medium and long haul segments. Singapore is home to some of world’s longest low-cost routes – to Athens (operated by Scoot) and, come September this year, to London Gatwick (operated by Norwegian)
Consumer preferences and habits have also evolved. In the past, air travel was a luxury only for those who could afford it. Today, the travel industry has seen the rise of new passenger segments - the millennial backpacker, business and leisure travel intertwining (“bleisure”), fly-cruise, overseas student travel, and eco-conscious tourism.
Passengers are also increasingly taking control and wanting to personalise their

own travel experience. Changi Connects helps facilitate self-planned itineraries by allowing passengers make hassle-free transfers at Changi Airport without the need for travel visa to enter Singapore, immigration clearance, and the retrieval and checking-in of their luggage a second time for onward flights. At Changi Airport today, conventional airport processes are also increasingly being automated. With our full suite of Fast and Seamless Travel
(FAST) initiatives for self check-in and self bag-drop, passengers can now save time during their departure journey.of course, the road to one billion has not always been smooth. Pandemics such as the SARS outbreak in 2003, the global financial crisis of 2008, aircraft incidents and accidents have all impacted air travel. Today’s airports face emerging threats to safety and security, including terrorist and cyber attacks and geo-political
developments which can affect air travel overnight.
Changi Airport’s philosophy has also been to plan for the future, to ensure that we have the capacity to meet the growing demand for air travel. Even as Terminal 4 opens in the second half of this year, Changi Airport is planning for the decades to come. Changi's future Terminal 5 will see capacity rise to 135 million passengers per annum.

NEw SERVICES AND FREquENCY CHANGES
Addendum to the previous issue: Singapore Airlines resultant weekly services to Ho Chi Minh should be 19 instead of 28, weekly services to Stockholm should be 5 instead of 19, and weekly services to Moscow should be 5 instead of 10.
Low-cost airline Norwegian (DI) will be launching its non-stop service between Singapore and London's Gatwick Airport this September. The route will be the world’s longest low-cost long-haul flight when it enters service.
Norwegian will initially offer four weekly services on the route, increasing to five weekly from Northern Winter 2017. It will deploy its 344-seat Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, which offers 35 premium and 309 economy seats. With the launch of this new service, the number of weekly services between Singapore to London will increase to 50, and weekly one-way seat capacity will also increase by 1,720 seats (+11%).
The addition of Norwegian to Changi’s list of operating airlines is expected to strengthen Singapore's position as a hub for both short- and long-haul low-cost carriers. Norwegian’s new London-Singapore services also expected to attract customers who are currently travelling between the two cities using competitively priced, one-stop flights.
Jet Airways and Fiji Airways entered into a codeshare partnership for flights between India and Fiji via Singapore. The codeshare agreement is expected to meet the growing demand for travel between India and Fiji. Jet Airways will place its code on Fiji Airways’ services between Singapore and Nadi, and Fiji Airways will place its code on Jet Airways’ services between Singapore and Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai.
Separately, Jet Airways and Jetstar Asia announced a codeshare agreement which sees Jet Airways placing its code on Jetstar Asia flights operating from Singapore to 11 destinations* across the Asia Pacific region.
For Jetstar Asia, the codeshare agreement allows the airline to participate in the high growth traffic between India and the Asia Pacific region. By concluding this codeshare agreement, Jet Airways will be the ninth codeshare partner for the Jetstar Group.
SIA and SilkAir signed a codeshare agreement with Vistara on its Indian domestic flights. Vistara is a joint venture between SIA and Tata Sons. The airline commenced its first flight operations between Delhi and Mumbai on 9 January 2015 and as of June 2017, it operates a more than 600 weekly flights and to 19 cities in India.
The codeshare adds four new Indian destinations to the SIA group's network - Bhubaneswar, Goa, Guwahati and Port Blair. With increasing demand for air travel between India and the Asia Pacific region, the new codeshare partnership will further enhance Changi’s position as the most connected airport to India in the Asia Pacific region.
* Jet Airways will place its marketing code ‘9W’ on Jetstar Asia flights to Bangkok and Phuket in Thailand, Perth and Darwin in Australia, Jakarta, Denpasar Bali and Surabaya in Indonesia, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Kuala Lumpur and Penang in Malaysia, and Hong Kong.

An exclusive interview withMr Mike Seetaramadoo,EVP Commercial & Cargo, Air Mauritius
Q: There is strong confidence in the vast potential that Africa can offer,
especially to those who are ready for it. Changi has also seen steady increases in traffic between Africa and Asia Pacific. how has Air Mauritius positioned itself to tap on the advent of this growth? The Air Corridor presents an optimistic future with growth opportunities between Africa and Asia Pacific. With three weekly flights to Singapore/Kuala Lumpur and supplementary flights during periods of high demand, we have set the tone for sustainable development. Effective from December 2017, a fourth weekly flight will also be introduced. Air Mauritius operates 22 weekly frequencies to Africa and 63 weekly flights to the Indian ocean islands. We are also working hard with Singapore Airlines to establish more codeshare destinations beyond Singapore from June 2017.
In addition, Air Mauritius is also promoting stop-over holidays with a ‘Break Your Journey’ package in Mauritius, where accommodation for the first night is complimentary and a token fee charged for additional nights. our fare products are well poised to cater to this traffic segment. Recently, we have also witnessed an increase in demand for such stop-over holidays from Australia and New Zealand.
Q: Air Mauritius is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. with this
key milestone in the pocket, what would be the airline’s key focus moving forward?Air Mauritius started operations to Singapore in 1985. We are a small island company and have lots to learn from Singapore. our 50th anniversary coincides with the 50th year of Mauritius’ independence. 2017 is not simply a year of celebration for Air Mauritius; it also marks the beginning of a ‘renewal’ of the airline.
Air Mauritius is set to be more customer-centric- placing our passengers’ wants and needs first and to better serve our customers at every step of their journey.
It is a return to our roots in hospitality to drive greater loyalty in the airline. We are focused on taking the airline to new heights, driving steady growth by expanding our network coverage in more cities, thus providing more international choices for our passengers. Being committed to this goal will make the difference.
Q: Are there any new developments to Air Mauritius’ products, and also
Mauritius as a destination, which we can look forward to?Mauritius was beautifully described by Mark Twain with the statement ‘Mauritius was first made, and then heaven, and that heaven was copied after Mauritius’. The island is a wonderful and safe destination for tourists. Besides the sun, sand and sea, Mauritius has many natural and man-made attractions to offer. The population is multi-ethnic and multi-cultural, which is marvelously reflected in our Mauritian cuisine and proverbial hospitality.
Mauritius is not only a destination, but a hub and a gateway into Africa and the Indian ocean islands. Air Mauritius will continue to tap on opportunities to better serve the markets through harnessing of the strengths of the Air Corridor. our aim this year is to offer an aligned product across our fleet, with uplifts to enhance the current product while anticipating the delivery of two new A350 aircrafts by the end of the year.
Besides, Air Mauritius will also become the leading player in Africa in developing the New Distribution Capability platform, to enhance the distribution and communication capabilities between airlines, GDS and travel agents. This will offer a wider range of options and smoother booking experiences to passengers.
EVP CoMMERCIAL & CARGo, AIR MAuRITIuS
Q: The Air Corridor Project between Mauritius and Singapore celebrated
its first anniversary in March this year. what are your thoughts on the performance of Air Mauritius and the Air Corridor and what were some of the key milestones achieved together with Singapore Changi Airport? The Air Corridor Project was an initiative launched by the Mauritian government, Air Mauritius and Changi Airport on 15th March 2016. The vision was to position Mauritius and Singapore as gateways into Africa and Indian ocean islands and Asia respectively. This past one year of aggressively marketing the services of the Air Corridor in Africa and Asia have proven to be a real success.
Passenger and cargo traffic between Africa and Asia Pacific for Air Mauritius have seen robust gains despite aggressive competition. unquestionably, making Singapore as our hub in Southeast Asia has proved beneficial to Air Mauritius.

SATS unveiled its new eCommerce AirHub on 13 April 2017 at a ceremony officiated by Mr. S Iswaran, Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry). The new $21 million facility spans 6,000 square metres and enhances Changi’s eCommerce mail sorting
capability to support the growing eCommerce market. By
deploying state-of-
the-art technology, SATS has multiplied mailbag processing capability by more than three times (from 500 mailbags an hour to more than 1,800 mailbags).
In addition, the facility has streamlined mail sorting process to deliver quicker turnaround for international eCommerce mail. With SingPost as the facility’s anchor tenant, the integration has improved
efficiency and space utilization; effectively enhancing the consignment
handling
capabilities for both partners. Mailbag processing time is now reduced by 50 per cent (from six hours to three), allowing international eCommerce mail to connect to an earlier flight for faster delivery.
The use of automation has provided opportunity for employee upskilling. SATS is currently the only ground handler in the region to operate such an automated airside facility.
In April 2017, SATS Coolport became the first ground handler in the world to receive approval from the European union (Eu) to handle intermodal transshipments of meat from New Zealand to the Eu via Singapore. This breakthrough comes after the facilitation of International Enterprise (IE) Singapore and Singapore’s Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) to establish a protocol to meet the stringent requirements of the Eu.
With the above authorization, SATS is now able to offer customers cost-effective multimodal freight solutions by expediting the sale of perishable products into the European market. To date, SATS has already successfully handled several batches of air-sea transshipments of lamb products from New Zealand to Britain and Germany.
The newly approved trade flow would open up new opportunities for the air cargo industry and further boost Changi Airport’s position as a consolidation hub for perishable products flowing from the Southwest Pacific to Eu.
2016 was yet another strong year for Changi. In the 12 months ended March 2017, passenger numbers and airfreight throughput reached new records of 59.4 million and 1.99 million tonnes, representing a year-on-year growth of 4.6% and 6.8% respectively. To celebrate the partnership between CAG and the airlines, and recognise airlines for their significant contributions in the growth and development of the Singapore air hub over the past year, CAG organized the Changi Airline Awards 2017 on 27 April 2017 at The St. Regis Singapore. The annual awards event, now in its 12th year, was graced by Mr. Ng Chee Meng, Minister for
Education (Schools) and Second Minister for Transport.
A total of 25 awards across six categories were given out during the event, with the highly anticipated “Best Airline Marketing Award” selected by the guests themselves through live voting. Drukair emerged as the popular winner for their extensive and creative marketing campaigns in Singapore to promote the airline’s Bhutan-Singapore services.
Another highly anticipated award for “Partner of the Year” was presented to DHL Express in recognition of their
strong partnership with CAG to grow and strengthen Changi Airport's air cargo hub status. In october 2016, DHL launched its fully automated South Asia Hub at the Changi Airfreight Centre, tripling its cargo handling capacity to 628 tonnes during the peak processing window. It also increased its parcel-sorting speed by six-fold to 24,000 shipments and documents per hour.
Speaking at the awards event, Mr. Lee Seow Hiang, CEo of CAG, reaffirmed Changi’s commitment to work with airline partners to cater capacity for future growth and to work with our partners to grow sustainable demand for aviation services.

TAPPING ThE AfRICAN POTENTIAL
The World Bank predicts that Africa’s economy will grow by 2.6% this year and a stronger 3.2% in 2018. Current spending by Africa’s consumers and businesses totals about uS$4 trillion annually and is continuing on an upward trend. on the aviation front, Africa presents an immense potential for growth, where IATA forecasts the continent to generate an additional 192 million passengers by 2035.
Africa remains an important region for Singapore, with bilateral trade growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.2% since 2005, achieving figures of uS$11.5 billion in 2015. The strong performance of the Africa market in 2016, where passenger movements to Singapore grew at a significant rate of 25%, continued into 2017 with a promising 10% increase in the first quarter. Point-to-point passenger traffic between Singapore and Africa also reached over 157,000 reflecting an 18% year-on-year increase.
Trade relations between Africa and Singapore are set to deepen, with extensive free trade agreements, tax treaties and investment guarantee agreements signed with various African nations. Singapore also has air services agreements with close to 30 African countries. Increased air connectivity is a crucial enabler to promote greater economic, social and tourism links between Africa and Singapore, and Changi Airport has worked very closely with airlines in the past few years to secure more air links into the continent
BuILDING ThE AIR CORRIDOR wITh MAuRITIuS
The Asia-Africa Air Corridor links Mauritius and Singapore via a thrice weekly
nonstop service operated by Air Mauritius. Bridging the distance between Southeast Asia and Africa, in particular the Vanilla Islands, the Air Corridor has significantly boosted Changi Airport’s connectivity to Africa with the added capacity.
Visitor arrivals from Mauritius in the past year have shown tremendous growth, registering an impressive 47% year-on-year in 2016 while visitor arrivals from the nearby Reunion Island grew by approximately 85% year-on-year. The stellar performance of the Air Corridor buoyed Air Mauritius’ move to increase frequency of services between the two destinations this year.
The project celebrated its first anniversary earlier in March this year in Mauritius, with a friendly soccer match held between the under-21 teams of Mauritius and Singapore and witnessed by the guest of honour, Pravind Jugnauth, Prime Minister of Mauritius.
wELCOMING EThIOPIAN AIRLINES TO ChANGI AIRPORT
on 1 June 2017, Ethiopian Airlines officially launched its five times weekly nonstop service between Addis Ababa and Singapore, marking Changi Airport’s fourth direct link into Africa after Johannesburg, Cape Town and Mauritius. The inaugural flight was celebrated with the arrival of Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) of Ethiopia, Demeke Mekonnen and his delegation of four ministers, together with Chief Executive officer of Ethiopian Airlines, Tewolde GebreMariam. Warmly welcomed by a lively lion dance performance at the airport, the guests were also hosted to a gala dinner in the evening, graced
by Singapore’s Coordinating Minister of Infrastructure and Minister for Transport, Khaw Boon Wan.
The visit from the Ethiopian ministerial delegation dovetailed a recent visit to Ethiopia by Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security, Teo Chee Hean, signaling a strong show of commitment of greater collaboration between the two governments. on 2 June 2017, DPM Mekonnen further promoted trade opportunities in Ethiopia to Singapore companies with the opening of a trade seminar. The seminar was jointly organized by the Singapore Business Federation and International Enterprise (IE) Singapore.
STRENGThENING ChANGI’S CONNECTIVITy TO AfRICA
The new nonstop service by Ethiopian Airlines marked another breakthrough in Changi Airport’s efforts to increase connectivity to Africa. Together with Singapore Airlines and Air Mauritius, the addition of Ethiopian Airlines will link Singapore to four points in Africa via 15 weekly services. The expanded African network presents an excellent opportunity to capture traffic between Singapore and unlinked African cities such as Nairobi and Harare via the above gateways.
With Changi Airport’s strong network within Southeast Asia and Southwest Pacific, Changi’s growing connectivity into Africa will strengthen Singapore’s position as the preferred gateway into Africa for these regions.
