DISTINGUISHED LECTURERS7th MLLER AWARD LECTURE Engineering in Fractured Rock Masses

John A. Hudson, Emeritus Professor, Department of Earth Science and Engineering Imperial College London, UK

The Mller Award is named in honour of the founder and firstpresident of the International Society for Rock Mechanics, Prof.Leopold Mller. The award is conferred once every four years inrecognition of distinguished contributions to the profession ofrock mechanics and rock engineering. It consists of a specialMller Lecture to be delivered at the ISRM InternationalCongresses, a work of art typical of the culture of the countryhosting the Congress, and a silver medallion with a portrait ofLeopold Mller. This years recipient, Dr. John A. Hudson isEmeritus Professor in the Department of Earth Science and

Engineering at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London. President of the ISRM from 2007 to 2011, he also holds numerous adjunct/visiting/honorary professorial roles. He was the Editor of the International Journal of Rock Mechanics & Mining Sciences for 23 years from 1983 to 2006. He has authored/co-authored six books and more than 150 technical papers, plus a further three edited books, including Comprehensive Rock Engineering (5 vols, 4407 pages) which is the only international benchmark overview of all aspects of rock engineering.

ISRM ROCHA MEDAL 2015 LECTUREInvestigating the Influence of Mechanical Anisotropy on the Fracturing Behavior of Brittle Clay Shales with Application to Deep Geological Repositories

2015 Recipient Andrea Lisjak Bradley, NSERC Industrial R&D, Fellow Geomechanica Inc, Toronto, Canada

The Rocha Medal honours Prof. Manuel Rocha, past Societypresident who organized the first ISRM Congress. It is intendedto stimulate young researchers in the field of rock mechanics. The prize, a bronze medal and a cash prize, have been annuallyawarded since 1982 for an outstanding doctoral thesis selectedby a Committee appointed for the purpose. This years winner isAndrea Lisjak Bradley. Born in Trieste, Italy, he received his Ph.D.in Civil Engineering - Rock Mechanics from the University ofToronto. His winning thesis: Investigating the influence ofmechanical anisotropy on the fracturing behaviour of brittle clayshales with application to deep geological repositories, was published in 2013.

The 2nd segment of the Monday plenary will provide hard-hitting insight and expertiseon the topics that are most important to the global mining community. The Congresstheme, Innovations in Applied and Theoretical Rock Mechanics, will be reflected at theplenary, through varied and global perspectives.
