seven industry groups are coming together to

Government support per initiative in the start-up
phase. The Competence Centres will ocus onresearch with a direct impact on industry and will
embrace ICT, energy eciency, manuacturing
process and breakthrough technologies in
bio-energy and bio-rening.
Another part o the supportive inrastructure is
ound in the Centres or Science, Engineering and
Technology (CSETs) which bring together scientists
and engineers rom academia and industry to work
on applied research. CSETs are leading-edge
collaborative projects, the results o which will be
brought to and benet the world.
Smart thinking needs smart money, however,
and in recognising this reality, Irelands total
investment in knowledge, including higher
education, has increased by an average annual
rate o over 10% in the past decade compared
with EU and OECD averages o around 3%.
Our economy-wide spend on RD&I has trebled
over this period and now stands at around D2.5billion, two-thirds o this rom the enterprise sector.
Creating employment through knowledge and

Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC) in University

Helsinn is a privately owned, Swiss-based

local divisions - Microsot EMEA Operations Centre
(EOC), Microsot European Development Centre
(EDC) and Microsot Sales, Marketing & Services

Microsot Corporation chose Ireland as the location
or its new 500 million EMEA Data Centre.
This centre will host its new platorm or Microsots

leading civilian thermal-imaging system manuacturer

is the assembly and testing o the SAT series o
thermal-imaging cameras. There is a potential
