Birth of Inyanda
INYANDA
YOUTH
NETWORK
In 2008 Philippi gave birth
to a dream. A collection of
artists, from different parts
of the Cape Flats, from
different aspects of art,
divided to created one voice
that will not speak only for
the artists but also for the
community tackling social
issues, such as teenage
pregnancy, substance
abuse, HIV/AIDS, domestic
violence etc.
By using performing arts
and informational/ preven-
tion workshops on these
social issues, with no help
from the government or
“professional assistance”
these artists manage and
organise their own social
awareness events. Com-
posing their own music and
plays, taking part in theatre
festivals with the support of
a local NGO Sizakuyenza
and an Italian organisation
named CESVI, as time
went on, we also got the
support from Cordaid. All of
the above mentioned
organisations, shared one
vision with Inyanda, and
that’s to improve the status
core of the disadvantaged
communities, increase
social cohesion and most
importantly job opportuni-
ties, that all leads to the
development that we all
want.
It was groups like ‘Street
Revolution, Survivors of
performing arts , Siyapham-
bili youth group, Blank
Ink ,art movement, Stars of
today etc. Different art
groups from different parts
of the ghetto, with help from
organisations from different
parts of the world, with this
joint effort there was a call
made to the European Un-
ion. It was positively an-
swered, this means now
Inyanda could reach more
of the people in the commu-
nity. Sports was also add-
ed, as it also added, as it
also occupies youth and
has a lot of career aspects.
2012 makes the dream and
the vision that was born in
2008 a reality, the child is
grown, let it be known we
fed her (the dream) in a
place that had nothing to
eat, kept her warm, when
there was no clothes but
because “it takes a village
to raise a child”, 5 years old
and she looks like this.
Even though I have though
I have to say so myself I’m
proud!
25 bursaries dedicated to
sports and arts.
That’s 25 households that
get a chance to dream, but
you will also agree that
there is still a lot to be done.

Graduation Ceremony of
Inyanda Founding Members...
In the month of august 2012 some of our founding
members went on a nine weeks journey that at the
end made them graduates for a life skills and
accredited computer course held at the Beautiful
Gates by a non- profit organisation called Bridge for
Hope.
“The journey wasn’t easy for anyone if I may say so
myself, I know this because I was with them that’s
where our paths crossed (INYN and I).” INYN
founding members took this course not only to
improve their computer skills but to find themselves
(through life skills) and create a bigger network, which they managed to do at the end
of the course. New relations where formed, unity was increased within the members
and a better communication surfaced. Also it will give them a better opportunity for
the market place.
Thandile Nyongo (communication officer of INYN) : “ the course helped me a lot in
realising my dream, passion and career in life. I wish more people would attend the
course, that would mean more people will have a brighter future.”
Lulama Mame (President):” the life skills part was the most beneficial to me, it helped
me realise who I am. I gained computer skills that I didn’t have’’.

Sports Graduates of 2012 It was very joyful and rewarding to these four
coaches the day they got a taste of their suc-
cess, after receiving bursaries from Inyanda
Youth Network in 2012 to study sports man-
agement at Boston college in Cape Town.
These graduates now show their gratitude to
Inyanda by helping our local communities in
coaching in schools and organisations in a
placement of Inyanda.
Their success doesn’t only end there they will also be placed at
Virgin Active to do an internship with the possibility of being
employed.
The success of these coaches opened a path for twenty other
coaches that have the same dream as these coaches to get the
opportunity to do what they did, study, graduate, give back to their
community and get the possibility to get employed

From CHAINS
to CHANGE...
On 23 of February 2013, the Inyan-
da Youth Network hosted a sports
and arts event at the Mandela Park
Stadium in Makhaya Khayelitsha.
This event was in partnership with
the following NGO’S: Grass Roots
Soccer that focuses on HIV/AIDS
awareness and soccer, Ubuntu
Africa that dose HIV/AIDS aware-
ness, Hoops for Hope for basketball
and netball and Africa Tikkun that
dose community development in
terms of spots.
Other than having fun on the day,
the focus of the event was to
combine sports and arts into one
solid competitive adventure, and
embracing the gifts and talents of
the youth. Activities such as Netball,
soccer, basketball, poetry, music,
dance took place. The likes of our
founding members Thembalomzi
Bathathu (Era), Phumzile Nyongo
and Odwa Sitemela (Jha) blessed
us with their unique original music
and other performances came
from our up-coming local artists from
different communities in Cape Town.
On the day a total number of 1373
people attended the event, 16 teams
of netball competitors, 16 teams of
soccer and 20 teams of basketball.
The lives of 202 people out of the
1373 were tested for HIV ,provided
by Grass Roots Soccer. Unlike arts
were everything was just fun and
laughter, in sports out of the teams
there only had to be one winner.
Over 200 people was tested for HIV/ AIDS...
