A Hands-On Professional Development Opportunity
Susi BolenderSusi Bolender is a Registered ASL-‐English Interpreter certi9ied by AVLIC who has been interpreting for the last 11 years. She holds a Master of Counselling Psychology and works as a Therapist with both Deaf and hearing clients and is a member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.
Karen MalcolmKaren Malcolm is a Registered ASL-‐English Interpreter certi9ied by AVLIC who has been interpreting for the last 33 years. She is also an interpreter educator who has been teaching interpreting to both novice and experienced interpreters for 23 years, in both Canada and the US, including 21 years at Douglas College in the Program of Sign Language Interpretation. She holds a Master of Science in Education (Teaching Interpreting).
Sara MacFaydenSara MacFayden is a Registered ASL-‐English Interpreter certi9ied by AVLIC who has been a freelance interpreter for the last 30 years. She interprets in a wide variety of settings. Sara taught for many years in the ASL & Deaf Studies Program at VCC and currently teaches in the Program of Sign Language Interpretation at Douglas College. She holds a Master of Education in Post-‐secondary Curriculum & Instruction.

PiperPiper is a Registered ASL-‐English Interpreter certi9ied by AVLIC who has been interpreting for 30 years. When she moved to Vancouver, she began specializing in mental health interpreting and continued for approximately 14 years. She has trained interpreters through WAVLI, PCAS and AVLIC initiatives and currently is working on her Master of Living in Joy.
This four-hour practical workshop will focus on some of the skills needed to interpret psychotherapy. There will be an introduction to best practices in this setting, with examples and time for discussion. Then, we will work with two videotaped mock psychotherapy sessions, enacted by an actual therapist and two different Deaf clients. You will work in a small group, with an instructor present to offer feedback. Each participant will have the opportunity to interpret 10 – 15 minutes of each of the sessions.
This is a great opportunity for interpreters experienced in this setting, as well as for those new to it. Maximum 16 participants. Working interpreters only.
