Current Topics Challenges Developments
Buddhist monks and Anti-Rohingya supporters demonstrate against what they claim is “bullying” from the international community
Myanmar government claims that Rohingya Immigrants are Bengali’s- illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
Are the bodies of at least 47 people washed ashore in Rakhine state, corpses of migrants trying to escape trafficking ships? Yet to be confirmed.
Myanmar allowed 727 migrant workers to enter the western Rakhine state
Myanmar was controlled by a savage military Junta
Already heavily-populated area: consisting of 54 million people (july2012) +
⅔ are Burmese- ethnic dominance- causes tension
Nearly 90% are Buddhist
Poor undeveloped nation due to stagnation, mismanagement and isolation
Over 100 ethnic groups
Myanmar’s Foreign Minister claims that immigrants are not citizens of Burma and long-term care cannot be provided as they themselves are a developing country.

Citizenship verification process is “supposedly in process” but UN agencies and other international groups have yet to receive full access to the process.
Myanmar’s Navy detained journalists, including the AP, over the weekend, erasing their camera memory cards, when they were trying to confirm the nationalities of the 730 migrants who were hidden away for days near a remote island before being towed into Rakhine state.

The Great Decisions Program is a year-long student enrichment program on foreign affairs that
fosters critical-thinking, conversation and decision-making skills. College professors and high
school teachers co-facilitate monthly sessions and encourage students to drive the conversation,
ask questions and share opinions. The Kick-Off Dinner & Dialogue is held every year and highlights
issues facing a country whether it is political or socio economical. There are currently 16 schools
participating in the program.
A Goodie bag was deemed necessary for the participating schools as it would be used as a
transitioning resource tool for other upcoming Great Decisions events.

Great Decisions Kick-Off Event Program-
Every year the Foreign Policy Association-Great Decisions Program chooses topics that’s focuses on global
issues. This year one of the Great Decisions Kick-Off topic is focused on issues affecting Myanmar and its
transition to democracy. The event program includes a list of participating high schools, colleges and
universities, an expert speaker panel, sponsors and the council’s upcoming Speaker’s Series timeline and
other upcoming events.

Myanmar Crossword Puzzle Activity
Learning Objective: The objective and goal of the word search puzzle is to engage students in
creative activities that broadens their understanding and knowledge about Myanmar.
Materials Needed- The word Search Puzzle and pens.
Activity
Students will search for hidden words in the search word puzzle and circle or cross out
Clues- Each word have descriptive information to engage student’s interaction and increase their
knowledge of Myanmar.

Every Friday the group converses in a weekly brainstorming session. These sessions are used to
generate and highlight ideas and solutions to global problems or issues.
Week 1 Membership- Membership- We discussed the prospect of new membership
recruitment tools such as offering special offers – something tangible such as books from
upcoming speakers. Also, the possibility of creating a book club, a members discount card, and
offering council merchandise (shirts, coffee mugs, bags, etc.). We also discussed possible locations
for field trips and ways of increasing the organizations visibility in the community.
Week 2- Engagement- Socializing/networking – This session we focused on member to
member interaction, social media, volunteer opportunities (e.g. ‘adopting a refugee
family’ or similar global-local initiative and live streaming of speaker series events for
members who are unable to access events.
Week 3- Hot Topics: 2015-16- This session focused on identifying relevant issues and
topics that are considered a high priority or concern in the U.S. and the World.
Week 4- "Developments in Technology"- This session identified developments in
technology, where we are now and where we are expected to be as technology continues
to advance. A couple of topics were considered- Quantum Computers- Their evolution,
speed, and huge capacity – are they revolutionizing the world of information processing,
cybersecurity, internet in developing countries, technology in education, and social media
in political campaigning and many more.
Week 7- How to be American – Dictionary of Cultural Literacy- This session we were
asked to identify what we thought equated to the American culture.
Week 8-Leadership -? - This session we were asked to define what leadership does it
means to me.
