Logistics costs in South Africa remain high compared to its trading partners.
Transport cost is the biggest contributor and the high demand for transport is more
and more supplied by road an expensive solution for certain / rail centric products
and geographic areas.
Furthermore, environmental costs will emerge more strongly as a concern.
Fortunately South Africa has significant opportunities to leverage co-modality as the
key for an optimum logistics system and I reiterate IMPERIALs views on the matter:
IMPERIAL Logistics believes that South African companies need to have a common objective to
alleviate the pressure on the road system and to bring back to rail the commodities and
containers that are suitable for rail transport.
It is essential that rail centric products involving commodities such as coal, iron-ore, chrome,
ferrochrome and manganese remain on rail more so than what is currently the case.
However, it important for the road and rail sectors to complement each other.

There has to be an optimum split between these two modes of transport and commoditieslike coal and manganese as well as containers should not be transported on road in most
instances, as this is destroying South Africas infrastructure.
Furthermore, solutions need to be found that optimise South Africas end-to-end supply
chain, including the way that South Africas rail, road, inland terminals and ports complement
each other to compete as a whole against other global supply chains.
Forming public private partnerships is a significant opportunity to support Transnet's
multibillion-rand investment plan in creating rail and inter-modal capacity to achieve
sustainable logistics.
The challenge however remains: Although consensus exists around issues such as
regeneration and use of rail capacity, not enough has been done yet.
The competitiveness and sustainability of South Africas logistics system remain at risk and
moving from consensus to action is long overdue.

Freight transportation negligible consideration in
company strategy
However, current business practices such as international sourcing
and quick turnaround times challenge this by extending transportation
distances and minimising lead times in the supply chain

Freight transportation negligible consideration in
company strategy
Standard modes of transportation consume fossil fuels, generate noise and
emit toxic compounds
By measuring the effects of inefficiencies in terms of cost and CO2 we are able
to identify potential improvements
