d) Drop the match into the bottle and quickly put the cap on, trapping the smoke inside. Dust, smoke and other particles help to make a cloud.
Materials 2 litre Clear Plastic bottle Warm water Matches
e) Take the lid off the bottle. Carefully light a match and hold it near the entrance to the bottle.
b) Squeeze the bottle hard and then release it, repeat several times. What happens? A cloud appears when you release and disappears when you squeeze. The third ingredient in making a cloud is a drop in air pressure.
a) Fill the bottle 1/3 full of hot water and put the lid on.
c) Take the lid off the bottle. Watch the cloud rise out of the bottle.
EXPLANATION: Water vapour, water in its invisible gaseous state, can be made to condense into the form of small cloud droplets. By adding particles such as the smoke enhances the process of water condensation and by squeezing the bottle causes the air pressure to drop. This creates a cloud!
