Brieflydescribetheactivitiesandaccomplishmentsofthedepartmentsincethelastprogramreview.
Ourlastprogramreviewwasspring2016,oneyearago.Wehavehiredonefull-time,tenuredtrackanthropologistwhostartedinfall2017.Spring2017westartedanthropologystudentindependentresearchprojectsin3Dprinting,assemblingandfinishing,alongwithaccessioning,taxonomicidentificationsandinventories.Wemadeequipmentpurchasesoverthislastyearthatwererecommendedinourlastprogramreview.
The Mission of Modesto Junior College MJCiscommittedtotransforminglivesthroughprogramsandservicesinformedbythelatestscholarshipofteachingandlearning.Weprovideadynamic,innovative,undergraduateeducationalenvironmentfortheever-changingpopulationsandworkforceneedsofourregionalcommunity.Wefacilitatelifelonglearningthroughthedevelopmentofintellect,creativity,character,andabilitiesthatshapestudentsintothoughtful,culturallyaware,engagedcitizens.

Anthropologyprovidesmulticulturalcourseworkonallpeoples,allplaces,andalltimesthroughaselectionofofferingstomeettransferstudents’needsandlife-longlearners’interests,integratingpracticalmaterialsandcuttingedgetechnologyintoourlessonstoprovideintellectualengagementsconcerninghumanadaptation,evolutionandculturalvariation.TheAnthropologyProgramfoundationallysupportsandconcretelyachievesMJC’sstatedcommitmentstointernational/globaleducation,diversityandnontraditionalstudents.Thecollectionsandequipmentthatsupportourbiologicalanthropology,archaeology,culturalanthropologyandlinguisticscoursesareextensive,includingover~4,000itemsrangingfromskeletalcaststoartifacts,toolstoartworks,andvoicerecorderstoanthropometers.Givensuchanarrayofsupportmaterialsthatarenecessarilyupdatedalongsidenewscientificdiscoveriesandadvancesintechnology,weareabletoprovidecuttingedge,hands-on,tactilelearningforourstudents.Anthropology’s4corecoursesareBiologicalAnthropology101,CulturalAnthropology102,BiologicalAnthropologyLaboratory105,ArchaeologyandCulturalPrehistory130.Additionally,7coursesarticulatewithCSU/UCandIGETCandfulfillMJCgraduationrequirementsandsupportseveraldegreepathwaysatMJC.Insummary,theAnthropologyProgramhasserved,andwillcontinuetoserve,thecollegeandcommunitybyteachingaboutculturalperspectives,bothlocalandglobal.Ourbiologicallybasedcoursesalsoengagestudentsinconceptscriticaltotheirsuccessascitizensandindividuals,suchasgainingtheabilitytoassesstheeffectsofpossiblenewgeneticmanipulationsonthehumanspecies.

Student Achievement and Completion College Goal for Student Achievement Increase Scorecard Completion Rate for Degree and Transfer TheCollegehasaprimaryaspirationalgoalofincreasingtheCompletionratefrom43%to53%ontheCCCCOScorecardCompletionRateforDegreeandTransfer[view]by2022.ThecompletionratesintheScorecardreferstothepercentageofdegree,certificateand/ortransfer-seekingstudentstrackedforsixyearswhocompletedadegree,certificate,ortransfer-relatedoutcomes(60transferunits).
Asyouanswerthequestionsbelow,pleaseconsiderhowyourprogramishelpingthecollegecompletethisaspirationalgoalofincreasingtheMJCDegree,Certificate,andTransferCompletionrateby10%ontheCCCCOScorecardby2022.

LocateyourdepartmentsuccessratesontheSuccessRateDataDashboardandconsideryourdepartmentsuccessratestrendsovertime,especiallythelasttwoyears.Also,considerthedatadetailingthevarianceofsuccessrateofcoursesacrosssections.Aretheserateswhatyouexpected?Arethereanylargegaps?Isthereanythingsurprisingaboutthedata?Whatdoyouseeinthedata?
OuranthropologyOVERALLcoursesuccessandfillratesareconsistentwith,althoughslightlybelow,thecollegetrendsinthelastthreesemesters.In2016-2017ourfillratewas4-11%belowcollegeaverage(college81-91%)andthesuccessratebelowthecollegeaverage2-7%(college68-69%).
ANTHROPOLOGYCOURSESUCCESSANDFILLRATES
Fillrate:Fall2015ourfillrateswerehigherthanthecollegeaverage,butthelastthreesemestershaveseenadeclineinouranthropologyfillrates.WethinkthatschedulingdemandschangedwiththeopeningupoftheCATbuildingandhavingmanymorerooms(includingdoublerooms)duringprimetimeschedulingthatmaybecompetingwithourtraditionalcoursesinanewway.Ourdepartmentisexploringalterativetimesforscheduling,including3-hourblocksforlecturecoursesduringtheweekdays,andonFridaymornings,Fridayafternoons.Weareconsideringalternativeschedulingmixes,forexample,apossibleincreaseinonlineANTH102sectionswithadecreaseintheon-campussections,asthiscourseseemsoneofthemoreimpactedinfillrateswhenface-to-face.Successrate:Drillingdowndeeperintothedatabycourselevel,wesawlowsuccessratesintwoface-to-facecoursesinparticular:ANTH140(Magic,WitchcraftandReligion)withtwoyearsuccessratesrangingfrom44%-58%;andANTH102(Culturalanthropology)rangingfrom53-64%,withanall-timelowof36%success

rateinspring2017.Thelastyear’ssuccessrateswereparticularlytroubling,andarelinkedtothoseface-to-facecoursestaughtbyaone-yeartemporaryfacultymemberwhoisnolongerinthedepartment.Coursestaughtbythetwotenuredprofessorshavemuchbettersuccess,inthe65-81%successrange,andouronlinecoursesat63%successratesareconsistentwiththecollegeaverage(65%)foronline.

Wehavechangedourfacultycompositionandreplacedlastyear’sone-yeartemporarypositionwithanewhireinafull-time,tenuretrackposition.Wethinkthisisthefirststeptowardsreachingoursuccessrategoals.Wewillcontinuetomonitoroursuccessratesinthenext3yearstoseehowweareachievingthosegoals.Additionally,weactivelyseekwaystoimproveourpedagogy.Weupdateourlectureswithcurrentresearchandnewdiscoveries.Weparticipateinteachingconferencesandfacultyretreats.Wecompleteonlinetrainingcertifications—bothMJC-ledandthroughoff-campusforums.WeengageinC-IDactivitiesforanthropology.Wemonitorandmodifyourcurriculumtoensurethatwearemeetingstatewideobjectivesandoutcomes.

However,whenwedeletemostofthecoursestaughtbytheone-yeartemporaryfacultymemberwithlowoverallsuccessrates,ourequityratesforallgroupsarebetween60-78%whichiswithinandslightlyhigherthantherangeforthecollegeat55-76%.

Wehavestrongdistanceeducationofferingswithnonoticeableachievementgapswhenconsideringdepartment-widetrends.Despitethelackofagapbetweenface-to-faceandonlinecourses,ourfacultyarecommittedtodevelopingandteachingengagedcourseswithahighlevelofstudent-facultycontact.Tothisend,oneofourfacultyhasjustcompletedthe@OneOESPCertificationcourseandwillbeimplementingnewstrategiesinfall2017andspring2018Anthropology101onlinecourses.

Ifyourratesfordegreesandcertificatesawardedarelowerthanyourgoals,whatareyourplanstoimprovethem?
Wearejustbeginningtothinkaboutgoalsforourdepartmentaldegrees,andarecognizantthatmanystudentstakeanthropologyinsupportoftransferwithoutanMJCdegree,andalsoinsupportofseveralotherdegreepathwaysatMJC.InourAugust2017departmentalmeeting,wediscussedstrategiestoconnectwithouranthropologymajorsearlyonintheircollegecareersatMJC.Wewanttoexplorewaystogetthenamesandemailaddressofnewstudentswhodeclareanthropologyastheirmajor.Withthis,wecanthendevelopacommunicationsinitiativethroughemailthatprovidesafacultycontact,asksstudentstomeetwithoneofus,andoutlinessomeimportantinformationfortheirnexttwoyears(schedulingcadence,AA-Tpathoptions,etc).We’vealsodiscussedhavinga5-minutepresentationinouranthropologycoursesatthebeginningofthesemestertointroducetheAnthropologyClubanditsupcomingevents,andupcomingsummeranthropologyfieldstudiesclasses.Anothergoalistoincreaseofrelationshipandcommunicationswithourlocal4-yrtransferinstitutions,StanStateandUCMerced.WeaimtoinviteanthropologyfacultymembersfromtheselocaluniversitiestogivepresentationsatourAnthropologyClubmeetingstohighlighttheopportunitieswithtransfer,andskillsandexpectationsrequiredfortransferstudents.Weareeagertointegratetheguidedpathwaysconcepttobetterchannelstudentsintheanthropologymajor.Furthermore,wethinkanthropologyshouldplayapivotalroleinguidedpathways.Forexample,thecourseCulturalAnthropologyteachesstudentsaboutthevalueofvariousculturalperspectivesandhumandiversity,impartingcriticalskillsandknowledgeforstudentsinourmulti-culturalCaliforniacommunity.WethinktheseskillsarefundamentalwhetherthroughatransferpathorstraighttotheworkforceafterMJC.WebelievethatAnthropology,andothersmallprograms,shouldbeconsideredandincludedinallaspectsoftheguidedpathwaysplanning.Thereisachanceofignoringtheimportanceofsmallprogramsthatleadtotransfersuccessratherthanemploymentsuccess,andwearestayingalertaboutpossibleimplicationsthatmayharmratherthanhelpsmallprogramsinthisprocess.

Anthropology’sWSCHisabovethecollegeaverageforfall2015at546.7(+35.14)andspring2016at494.31(+4.05).WSCHisnominallybelowthecollegeaverageinthelastyear:fall2016at503.29(-4.6)andspring2017at485.09(-3.27).TheWSCHnumberscollege-wideandbyprogramarestartling,though,whencomparedtooverallproductivityinthefiveyearsprevioustothesenumbers,whenthecollegerangedfrom510-557WSCHandourdepartmentrangedfrom580-693WSCH.Wedrawthreeconclusions:1)thelowproductivityisacollege-wideissue;2)ourdepartmentalnumberstakeahitfromincreasedofferingsofthelabcourses(lowermaxenrollments)andreductioninlargelecturesections(doubles,triplesandquads)–ashifttoincreaseoursuccessrates;and3)ourlastyear’slowerproductivitymayberelatedtoaone-yeartemporaryfacultyhirewithlimitedteachingexperienceandloweroverallsuccessandretentionratescomparedtothedepartment.

Takingintoaccountthetrendswithinthisprogramandthecollege,describewhatyourealisticallybelieveyourprogramwilllooklikeinthreetofiveyears,includingsuchthingsasstaffing,facilities,enrollments,breadthandlocationsofofferings,etc.
Weanticipatearobust,healthyprogramwiththreefull-timefacultyanduptofiveadjunctfaculty,teachingavarietyofcoursestosupportourAA-T,CSU/UCtransferrequirementsandMJCgraduationrequirements.WearealsointegratingmoresophisticatedtechnologyproductsinourteachingsintheCenterforAdvancedTechnologies,suchascollaborationswithComputerGraphicsand3DprintingoffossilcastsofHomonaledi.ThedepartmenthasbuiltlargesectionlecturesinSierraHalloverthelastseveralyears.However,theenrollmentshavebecomesluggish2014-2016.Weare"bringingback"anthropologytotheEastCampus,especiallygivenournewteachingspaceintheCATbuilding.Wearenowabletostrategizeourlecture/labschedulingbetteraswehaveasecondinstructionalspacededicatedtoanthropologyintheCenterforAdvancedTechnologies.Weanticipateenrollmentincreaseswithincreasedofferings.Wedohavemorestudentsinourlabclassesthesepasttwoyears,becauseweincreasedtheofferingsofourlectureclasses.Typicallywehaveabout25-30%ofourlecturestudentsenrollinthelabclasses,butthatisincreasing.Wearemindfuloftheinterrelationshipofthesecoursesandstrivetoscheduleall101classestomaximizepotentialenrollmentinthe105sections.Theyarenot"linked"soanylabclasscanbetakenwithanylectureclass.Thedepartmentisdevelopingandbuildingourteachingcollectionsfor101,105,107and130nowthatwehavethestoragespaceneededtoproperlyhousethesematerials.Theseteachingmaterialsincludecasts,fossils,equipment,labsupplies,books,artifacts,DVDs,computersandnewsoftwareforthem.Weplantoincreaseuseoftechnologyin101,105,107,and130.Thereareamultitudeofonlineaccessonlylaboratoryexperimentsthatourstudentscanutilize,aswellashavingtheabilitytoperformbioarchaeologicalorforensicanalysesusingdatacollectedinthelabandsentthroughonlinedatabaseanalysissoftware.Inaddition,differentmodesoflearningcanbedevelopedtoincreasestudentsuccess.Forexample,ApplepencilscanbeusedontheiPadProtodrawfossilsandsavethemtoafileforfuturestudy.Visualandtactilelearnerswillbenefitfromthistechnology.Obtainingadequatecomputers/iPads/internetaccessforourlabspaceisessentialtothisplan.Furthermore,havingbettervisualequipment(VPU)inbothCAT201and208,withprojectionsystemandscreen,willincreasethestudentaccessibilityofinformationprojectedduringclass.TheTVmonitorscurrentlyintheseclassroomsaretoosmallforstudentspastthefirstthreerowstoadequatelyreadtext,whetheritbeonmaps,closedcaptioningonvideo,slidesorprojectedimagesusingtheinstalleddocumentcameras.Wehavefoundthat8amclassesareweaklyenrolledandattendedcomparedtomoretraditionalmorningtimes.Werequirethatalllecturecoursesuseessayexaminationsformethodsofassessment.Inaddition,thereareoftenotherlengthierpapersrequiredinourclasses.Therefore,writingskillsarefundamentaltothesuccessfulcompletionofanthropologycourses.Wearecontemplatingwhethertoenactapre-requisiteforourlecturecoursesofEnglish101(nowpermittedlocalcontrolthroughMJC'scurriculumcommittee).Wearealsohesitantbecauseitmaycreatea**decline**inenrollmentinitially.Ourdialoguecontinuesonthissubject.Wehavemovedawayfromlargelecturecoursestosinglesectionofferingsasourconnectionwithstudentsisbetterandourretention/successhigher.Ouronline101and102courseshavehighdemand(robustenrollments),sowewillcontinuetoschedulethoseasfrequentlyaspossibleinfall,springandsummer.
