\Drive Right In To August ~ When I think of hot

August nights I think of Drive-In Movies. Three of my

favorite things cars, movies, and summer made a great

combination.

When I was little I would go to the Drive-In in pajamas,

and fall asleep right after the Tom & Jerry cartoon. When I was a teenager

the drive-in was a favorite Saturday night hangout. My friend, “Jake” in his

Purple “57” Chevy, and me, in my White “63” Chevy Impala; with three on

the column! (Ask if you don’t know what that is). We would arrive at the

drive-ins with our cars full of friends, and even sneak several extra friends

stored in the trunk!

August 21st commemorates the anniversary of Hawaii Statehood.

Where were you on August 21st, 1959? Maybe you went to the Drive in

Movie! Maui had a fairly new drive‐in theater that had opened on May 6,

1955. Maui’s first drive‐in theater was developed by Maui Amusement

Company, owned by M.G. Paschoal and H.B. Weller and located on

Kaahumanu Avenue behind the Maui Vocational School. The ten‐ acre

theater featured a 60‐foot high tower and showcased the new, wide‐screen

Cinemascope technology, and could accommodate up to 440 automobiles.

The first two Cinemascope movies produced were "The Robe" and "How to

Marry a Millionaire."

Sadly, the Kahului Drive‐In closed on December 15, 1967. The closing was

not the result of poor attendance, but rather the prime location was acquired

by the State of Hawaii for incorporation into the new Maui Community

College campus. With the closing of the drive‐in, Maui Amusement’s theater

holdings dwindled from a high of fourteen at the drive‐in’s inception to only

one indoor theater operation, the Iao.

Too bad they closed the drive in, as it is so close

to where we are now that we probably could

watch the movies from the 4th floor picture

window.

Flip-Flops: Your Arch Enemy?

People of all ages wear flip-flops

during the summer, but this type of

footwear can cause pain and injury

when worn for long periods of time,

while walking on concrete or when

playing sports, experts warn.

That's because flip-flops offer limited arch support

and coverage for the feet, orthopedic doctors at the

Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City

said in a medical school news release.

The doctors outlined some potential health concerns

associated with these casual, summer shoes.

People change how they walk when wearing flip-

flops, gripping with their toes in order to keep the

shoes in place. This can lead to stress in certain

muscles and strain in toes, ankles, legs, hips and the

back.

Because the flat and flimsy shoe bed in flip-flops

does not provide adequate foot support for all-day

wear, people may be at risk for arch pain, plantar

fasciitis and nerve problems.

The lack of shock absorption in flip-flops also can

lead to pain in the feet, legs, hips and back. Other

problems associated with flip-flops include broken

toes and toe nails, cuts and germs, the Mount Sinai

experts said.

Sun damage is another potential issue with flip-flops

and other sandals. Anyone wearing this type of

footwear should apply sunscreen to their feet in

order to reduce their risk for skin cancer.

Roselani Place and Ola Na Mele Productions invite you to a Picnic for Poki at 11:00 AM at the Historic

Kaahumanu Church in Wailuku Town, 103 South High Street on Thursday, August 17, 2017. Our featured guest

with live Hawaiian entertainment will be the Uncle Richard Ho’opi’i.

Uncle Richard Ho'opi'i is one of Hawai'i's most beloved singers. Best known as one half of the popular Maui duo,

The Ho'opi'i Brothers, he has practiced the traditional Hawaiian art of leo ki'eki'e (falsetto) for most of his life. He

and his brother, Solomon (his life-long singing partner) were recipients in 1997 of the prestigious National

Endowment of the Arts Folk Heritage Fellowship, America's highest honor for

traditional artists.

Roselani Place, Maui's premier assisted living community, will have fresh baked

cookies, coffee, and water. Attendees should bring a lawn chair or mat and their

lunch and most importantly, bring a friend.

Picnic for Poki is held every third Thursday on the month to continue bringing the

spirit of aloha and Hawaiian music to the Maui community in honor of the late

Allen "Braddah Poki" Pokipala. Braddah Poki was dedicated to sharing Hawaiian

music and culture throughout various venues in Hawaii.

Here’s how to play…

The objective of the game is to fill all the blank

squares in a game with the correct numbers.

There are three very simple constraints to follow.

In a 9 by 9 square Sudoku game:

Every row of 9 numbers must include all

digits 1 through 9 in any order

Every column of 9 numbers must include

all digits 1 through 9 in any order

Every 3 by 3 subsection of the 9 by 9

square must include all digits 1 through 9
