IndianaMap for Economic Development
It’s statewide, it’s regional, it’s local…it’s yours!
Introduction
• The IndianaMap is critical map-data layers – the DATA FRAMEWORK
• It is packaged with free software and a wealth of additional data (or you can use your own GIS software)
• Here are examples of how GIS and the IndianaMap are used for economic development
The New Business Pages
Indianapolis needed an effective way to maintain and disseminate information about commercial and industrial properties that are available for sale or lease.
The Indianapolis Economic Development Portal is a state-of-the-art tool to attract business, bring buyers and sellers together, and inform everyone about the many amenities of Indianapolis.
Evolving Economies
The Town of Chesterton is located in Northwest Indiana, and is the third largest community in Porter County. For years, the steel industry was Chesterton's primary economic base. With the recent collapse and resurgence of the industry, however, the Town was forced to take a closer look at the structure of the local economy.
Using GIS as a tool in the development packages helps Chesterton successfully compete for economic growth on a global level.
Conservation & Quality of Life
Attracting new business and growing Indiana's economy rely on improving our quality of life, natural habitat and recreation opportunities.
Indiana Biodiversity Initiative developed a single common source of information is available to everyone
Improved quality of life attracts business, grows the economy and staunches "brain drain"
Big Man on Campus
As a Fortune 500 company, Eli Lilly is faced with the daily task of managing millions of assets, as well as planning for the future.
To manage and maintain these assets, Lilly uses GIS to incorporate digital construction documents and surveys, and support 3D modeling and other map data.
It has come to play an essential role in coordinating hundreds of design projects and successful tracking of $1.5 billion in city and private infrastructure improvements
Attracting the Big Retailers
The City of Hammond wanted to persuade Wal-Mart to locate a new store in the community.
Using GIS, Hammond Economic Development staff created vicinity maps that analyzed driving distances to existing Wal-Mart stores and community demographics.
Hammond successfully made a case for an additional store by demonstrating the need for a closer, more convenient location.
Managing the Boom
All local governments struggle with managing information about their communities. Finding ways to analyze, update and maintain data can be vital to fast-growing communities like Avon, Indiana.
Town officials can see how proposed new developments will impact the existing drainage system - they now know exactly what infrastructure they have and how much growth it can tolerate
GIS for Economic Development
• What is the spatial pattern of businesses and households within a community?
• Where are the best sites for a proposed industrial park?
• Which retail sectors are underrepresented within a community?
