Presidents Report
It was great to see such a good turnout at our meeting last week. We had Tony Read, Honorary Member, Chris Mara from Cheltenham Rotary and his friends, John Adler for his first visit, plus Vivien Zoppolato and Tim Dark back visiting us for the second time.
Not being biased in anyway, the talk from Frank Kelly on the Air force SR-71 spy plane was eye opening not only to the many pilots and aviation buffs in the room, but from feedback, all of those who attended enjoyed his talk. Having spent many hours in a Cessna and knowing it takes around 30 minutes to climb to 8,000 ft flying at Mach 0.136, the thought of Mach 3.0 at 80,000 ft is a different world.
Megan is the first person in the Club to receive a new recognition award, by way of Brazil, for intro-ducing a new member.
Changeover is pretty well finalised now with 82 guests. We will have the Mayor, Felicity Frederico,

attending.
I suspect Peter Flude and Heather Chisolm have made some special sacrifice to Theoi Meteoroi the ancient Greek god of weather. Whatever you are doing keep it up. Can you believe we have had four Farmers Markets in a row with perfect weather and great crowds. Im-portantly this has provided us with a strong fi-nancial base for projects in our community in coming years and continues to raise our visibil-ity. Not only do we have our volunteers each month on the roster, as you walk around, many of our members and partners who arent on the roster that month are also at the market. This month we also had something new with San-dringham Hospital partnering with us at the main entrance to raise awareness of a new pro-ject at the hospital in 2016.
Next week will be my final meeting and it is im-portant you all come to hear our special guest speaker. Our very own Trish Smyth will outline her vision for the club in her year. I know we will be in good hands and the club will continue to build on its successes. Tony Phillips will chair the meeting.

Speaker: Frank Kelly, GM Business Development Rail, Lockheed Martin Topic: His experience in the SR-71 both as a crew member and as the Program Manager for the US Air Force
Colonel Frank Kelly (Retd.) had a distinguished career in the US Air Force as an Engineering Officer, a Flying Officer and a Commander of a a large Engineering squadron. After leaving the Air Force he joined Lockheed Martin in vari-ous Management positions and is currently GM Business Development , Australian Rail Pro-grams. He is a dual Australian and US citizen with an Australian wife and two daughters. He has lived in Australia for the past two years. The subject of his talk was drawn from his ex-perience as both a program manager and a crew member of the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird Strategic reconnaissance aircraft. With a top speed exceeding 3500 km/h at an altitude of above 26 kms and a range of around 5400 kms the Blackbird is arguably the greatest airplane ever built. It was designed in the early 1960s and first flew in December 1964 but has still not been surpassed, an amazing feat. Frank was able to give a first hand account of what an amazing aircraft it was and what it was like to fly on active missions during the Cold War. The genesis of the Blackbird was the shooting down of the U2 spy plane over the USSR in 1960. US President Eisenhower demanded a
new generation of reconnaissance aircraft which would not be vulnerable to Soviet sur-face to air missiles. Legendary designer Kelly Johnson and his team at Lockheeds Skunk Works. Virtually all aspects of the aircraft had to be de-signed from the base up as existing materials could not handle the high temperatures in flight. The aircraft is 90%+ titanium which was sourced through a series of front companies from Russia the worlds leading supplier! The plane expands so much that it had to be de-signed to leak when on the ground but tightens up as it reaches operational temperature. Therefore it takes off with only a light fuel load and is refuelled once it is in the air.
The two person crew for the Blackhawk were specially chosen for the depth of their flying ex-perience and maturity. Only 150 people have ever flown the 32 planes ever placed in active service. Average missions were about 4 hours long but the longest was over 11 hours with multiple refuelling. To find out more about the Blackbird see;
