World per capita primary energy consumption per year by fuel type, 1850–2014. Primary electricity converted by direct equivalent method. Source: Data compiled by J. David Hughes from Arnulf Grubler, “Technology and Global Change: Data Appendix,” (1998), and BP, Statistical
Review of World Energy, (annual).
The average global
temperature in 2016
was:
•0.12 °C hotter than
last year (2015)
•0.25 °C hotter than in
2014
•1.46 °C hotter than
the coldest year in the
record (1909)
•0.35 °C hotter than
the average for 1998
•1.25 °C hotter than
the 1881-1910
average.
«Con un aumento della temperatura
di 3¡C da qui alla fine del 2.100 la
superficie dell’Italia - secondo uno
studio della Columbia University di
New York - potrebbe diminuire, a
livello costiero, dell'8%, perdendo
così 4.500 chilometri quadrati di
territorio.
L'agricoltura ne risentirebbe, in quanto
nel meridione aumenterebbe la
desertificazione, mentre in pianura
padana, con il clima più caldo, si
potrebbero coltivare olivi e limoni. La
malaria e la febbre gialla, malattie
tipiche dei tropicali , potrebbero
diffondersi maggiormente.

Homo sapiens are thought to have undergone three major energy transitions previously: 1) the discovery of fire; 2) the agricultural revolution; and 3) the fossil fuel (industrial) revolution. Photo credit: Wikimedia and Shutterstock.com. Historically, major changes to energy systems have also led to enormous economic and political shifts. This suggests the renewable energy transition will entail much more than simply replacing coal power plants with solar panels and wind turbines. •How will our food system evolve as we reduce fossil fuel inputs? •Who will be the economic winners and losers from the energy transition? •Will a renewable future be more equitable or less equitable? •Are our current governing institutions capable of managing the energy transition? •What changes to our homes and public buildings can we anticipate?
