F/OSS : Key Points
OS Easy to Use, Deploy and Test before Installation Open Office Support large number of File Extensions Easy Administration Tools, Less Virus, Less System
stable problems Online Packages Repositories Huge Community Support Less Vendor Specific Drivers Required Easy Backup Tools Secure No Cost to Use, Support and Upgradation
![Page 18: Improve Academic IT Infrastructure](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051608/545376d5af795911308b5425/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Problems to Implement
• Weaning users from the traditional tools they
are accustome to.
• Study well before use.
• Patience
• Hardware specific Softwares
• Well Internet/LAN connectivity
![Page 19: Improve Academic IT Infrastructure](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051608/545376d5af795911308b5425/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
What we have done...
We have already overcome the few problems of F/OSS Implementation
Except to replace each users desktop.
We are smoothly running...
eLearning Moduler Object Oriented Learning Environment, CMS
on Fedora Server http://technet.titsbhiwani.org.
FTP server ftp://technet.titsbhiwani.org
MSDNAA FTP Site
Telnet Server
Software Deployment Server on Fedora (Virtual Machine)
Thin Clients and Remote Accessiblity

What we require...
Rather then to pay companies we should move
to F/OSS for that we require
• Support from Administration (Director/Management)
• Encouraging Faculty/Students.
• Build a team of motivated OSS Professionals.
• Training/Motivation to the Staff to use OSS.
• A Helpdesk.
• Research & Development Department
![Page 21: Improve Academic IT Infrastructure](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051608/545376d5af795911308b5425/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Our Contribution in F/OSS
• We are the Various Linux ISO Image Tester and Distributor
• Educator
• Developer
• Implementation Support Provider
• Institute MOODLE Administrator
• Desktop/Server Administration Support Provider
• We have own Mirror Server
![Page 22: Improve Academic IT Infrastructure](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051608/545376d5af795911308b5425/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Suggestions
• We can move User Desktop from Proprietary Software to
Linux Desktop
• Encourage to use Open Office, Firefox (CrossPlatform)
• Use LowHardware Machine with LTSP
• IP Chains to Setup Firewall, Squid for distribution of
bandwidth and SARG to monitor its consumption
• Linux Apache MySQL PHP for Programming Environment
• Webmin for System Administration and NTOP to manage
and monitor the entire Network
• Backup on NAS using FreeNAS and OpenFiler
• EMail Server using QMail
• Library on Koha Software
