Church traces its religious roots back to 1887, making it one of Elizabeth City's oldest african-american baptist churches. For the first two years, the church's original 29 members worshipped without a pastor and with no church building, until the rev. zion hall berry organized them into the Corner stone Church in 1889. soon after, in 1891, a wooden structure was built at the current location, and the congregation has thrived ever since. the church's signature sound is the daily ringing of its bells, a common sound to residents
and a charming town welcome to visitors

Waist Watchers alert: This city contains some serious temptation.
Elizabeth City has a great restaurant scene, but standouts amid all that culinary excellence are delicious desserts.
The Cupcakery Serves Water Street Treats
Since 2010, the national cupcake craze has an Elizabeth City twist, thanks to Heather Fletcher and her mother, Sharon Hundley, who own and operate The Cupcakery on Water Street downtown. In addition to literally dozens of cupcakes to choose from, the bakery also specializes in cookies, doughnuts and other pastries.
“We carry about 12 varieties of cupcakes a day, as well as a flavor of the week,” Fletcher says. “We’re getting a lot more foot traffic now, so I’ll probably be adding flavors – and employees – soon.”

The Chocolate house hits Jackpot in Southgate mall
Bigger is better at The Chocolate House, which recently moved into a new, highly visible spot in Southgate Mall. Owner Kathy Dowdy, “The Chocolate Lady,” now has an area with tons of foot traffic, as well as a public-facing kitchen where she and staff can craft truffles, apples and more using high-end E. Guittard chocolate.
“This has been a great shot in the arm,” Dowdy says. “I kept my wonderful downtown customer base, and now have gotten a lot of new customers. After five years, we’re also finally beginning to really develop our online presence as well.”
Dowdy developed a love of baking from her mother, and studied under a master chocolatier before opening her own shop. Now she’s got people literally lined up around the corner for treats, and has to make sure she never runs out of favorites like the key lime truffle.
“When I do run out, they look like they’ve lost their best friend. In this location I can’t make them fast enough, which is a great problem to have,” she says.
Kathy’s Kreations, Wild Flower Café Turn Out Treats
A lifelong love of baking and cake decorating led Kathy Parks to start up Kathy’s Kreations in 1994. The Wildflower Café (inside Kenyon Bailey Garden Supply) followed in 1997. Parks and her staff offer a varied, healthy menu, which includes many tasty desserts, making both locations mainstays for Elizabeth City’s foodies.
Nine bars, muddy Waters Keep Things handy
Grabbing a cup of coffee has always been easy at Nine Bars Espresso and Muddy Waters Coffeehouse, and thanks to Esther Cheers’ pastries, there’s always something for your free hand to snag as well.
Having moved to Elizabeth City with her husband, who’s in the U.S. Coast Guard, Cheers uses her culinary training to whip up blueberry scones and other easily held pastries for the two shops. She also produces a wildly popular gluten-free, crustless quiche.
“People really like things like biscotti and scones, things you don’t need a fork for, but we do try different things on occasion,” Cheers says. “But we never change the scones. I’d be in trouble if we didn’t have the scones.”

South Park. No, it’s not the television show. Elizabeth City’s new South Park Sports Complex opened in August 2011.
The $2.7 million multi-use facility is a joint venture by Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County to develop a site that was once proposed for industrial development. Instead, the community now has a beautiful recreation facility and draw for tourism dollars located virtually in the middle of the county.
“It’s an easy place to access. South Park is close to the Coast Guard base, close to the middle school and pretty close to the high school,” says Bobbi White, Director of the Elizabeth City/Pasquotank County Parks & Recreation Department. “The complex was funded with two $500,000 state recreation grants, and the rest of the money came from the city and county.”
Even an Umpire’s RoomSouth Park has five baseball/softball fields, three of
which have 200-foot fences while the other two fields have 250-foot fences. All fields are equipped with lights for night games.
“There is also a playground, a pavilion for picnics, concession stand and restroom area, and an observation room above the concession stand to be used by people running tournaments or other events,” White says. “There is even an umpire’s room where umps can change clothes and relax between games.”
Also on the grounds is a baseball batting cage, softball batting cage and golf driving range.
“We have already held ball tournaments that drew teams from other communities, meaning that people were spending sports tourism dollars at our restaurants, hotels, stores and gas stations in Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County,” White says.
Welcome, 30 TeamsOne of those tournaments took place barely a month
after South Park opened, with 30 teams representing Nations Baseball Virginia. That weekend drew players and their families from southeastern Virginia and northeast North Carolina.
“Nations Baseball Virginia heard about the opening of our beautiful new facility and wanted to be a part of it,” White says. “This complex can accommodate up to 30 teams for baseball games and tournaments
stoRy by KEvIN lITWIN
for boys age 12 and under, and softball games and tournaments for girls age 18 and under. Grandstands at each field can hold up to 200 spectators each.”
money makersPrior to South Park becoming a reality, White and
Charlotte Underwood visited a similar sports complex in Rocky Mount, N.C., to gather information for the Elizabeth City project. Underwood is Director of the Elizabeth City Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.
The two women learned that besides hotel, restaurant, store and gasoline tourism factors, visiting teams also pay a field rental fee, a gate fee for entering tournaments and a vendor fee if they want to sell any baseball/softball-related products.
“These tournaments are money-makers. You just need an attractive place to stage them,” White says. “South Park is that place.”

located at the head of the Albemarle Sound, Elizabeth City has been named one of the Best Places to Live
on the Coast by Money magazine.Elizabeth City is also one of the
great places to be for the United States Coast Guard Base, whose relationship spans more than 70 years with the county seat of Pasquotank County.
local appreciation for base“They really get the Coast Guard
here, and that’s really gratifying,” Capt. Donald Culkin says.
Culkin, who has served in various capacities across the nation during his career with the maritime service, including at headquarters in Washington, D.C., as deputy director of Health, Safety and Work Life, recalled a greeting he received while getting a bite to eat in downtown Elizabeth City. Some local residents, seeing Culkin in uniform, approached him and thanked him for two things – his military service to the country and the Elizabeth City Coast Guard base.
“They love the military here,” Culkin says, a native of New York City. “Not only are we appreciated for the service, but we have a good relationship with the local community and they understand what the Coast Guard is about.”
base vital to Economic Growth
The Coast Guard is many things to the Elizabeth City area – valued neighbor, civilian employer, engine for economic growth. There is even a Coast Guard Week in Elizabeth City, celebrated the first week in August each year.
Congressional appropriation landed the base in Elizabeth City in 1939, and it has operated continuously since. The command covers 822 acres that support 1.1 million square feet of infrastructure
and more than 100 buildings. Some 2,200 active duty civilian and contractor personnel work at the base, home to five commands: Base Elizabeth City, Aviation Technical Training Center, Air Station Elizabeth City, Station Elizabeth City and the Aviation Logistics Center. The National Strike Force Coordination Center, while not located on the base proper, is also located in Elizabeth City.
The Albemarle Economic Development Commission in Elizabeth City estimates the annual economic impact of the base at $117 million, which includes base payroll, local contracts, utility payments and local construction. The figures do not include Coast Guard retirees living in Elizabeth City, which has the highest population per capita of Coast Guard retirees in the country.
As a base commanding officer, Culkin’s job is to provide direct support of Coast Guard activities in the area. Culkin is also responsible for supporting some 2,200 on-base active duty, civilian and contractor personnel and more than 2,000 individuals at Coast Guard units throughout North Carolina.
“We’re the support nexus. We’re the people the public doesn’t see, but we make sure the units we serve have what they need to get their jobs done,” Culkin says.
Culkin believes the future is bright for the Coast Guard in Elizabeth City. The base is constructing a new state-of-the-art facility to train rescue swimmers, new barracks and a new unit galley for meals.
“Over the years the Coast Guard and my predecessors have done a great job keeping the base operational,” Culkin says. “We’ve had a very close relationship with the community and maintaining that is very important.”

because of its importance to the community, coast Guard base elizabeth city enjoys an annual celebration in its honor. the elizabeth city area chamber of commerce is a key supporter of this event, coast Guard Week.
“thank goodness for the coast Guard presence in elizabeth city, and we recognize their personnel every august during a week-long celebration,” says Jennifer Palestrant, elizabeth city area chamber of commerce president.
one of the major coast Guard Week events organized by the chamber is a harbor nights concert in Waterfront Park. the august 2011 concert featured rising country music artist ashton shepherd. the uso of north carolina co-sponsored the performance.
“the ashton shepherd show brought 2,500 spectators to Waterfront Park, which was at least 1,000 more people than had been in attendance at the other coast Guard concerts,” Palestrant says. “elizabeth city is a maritime community, so having the coast Guard here is ideal.”

“our main mission is being an advocate for our members,” Palestrant says. “anything that will help the overall economy of our city and counties is what we’re all about. for example, there is a large aviation park in elizabeth city that we are hoping to expand, which will bring increased interest in the aviation industry to the region. the chamber does whatever it can to assist endeavors such as that.”
SOCIal GRaCESPalestrant adds that the
chamber is also getting more involved with social media in an effort to keep members further informed on all aspects of local business happenings.
“We just launched a facebook page … and we also redesigned our elizabethcitychamber.org website in august 2011,” she says. “there are many links on the website that can be useful to members and residents.”
Palestrant appreciates all 650 members continuing to be part of the chamber, and says studies show that potential customers are 63 percent more likely to buy from a business if they are a member of the chamber of commerce.

Not sure what sounds good

restaurateurs certainly don’t
make it easy for you. from classic
american cuisine to asian flair,
this place has plenty to choose
from when it comes to dining out.
tOyama Japanese restaurant
known up and down the east coast for its amazing sushi bar, you can find everything from sashimi and yakimeshi to tempura and teriyaki at toyama Japanese Restaurant. the kid-friendly
environment makes dining here a great experience for the whole family, and the wait staff gets rave reviews as well.
sidney’s caFé & BistrOone of the newest entrants to

who opened sidney’s café & bistro
in september 2011. Perhaps best
described as all-american with a
twist, sidney’s serves as an outlet
for this foodie’s desire to take the
ordinary and make it special.

and for those who might be
wondering, the restaurant’s
namesake is Patrick’s cat, as well
as her hometown of sidney, ohio.
cypress creek grillsince 1997, locals in the know
have kept the cypress creek Grill hopping. begun by bobby and Jane Plough in 1997, the restaurant’s menu showcases the texas Gulf coast roots of its owners, with a little bit of “creole” thrown in to keep things interesting.
“We’ve got texas style beef brisket, which is a signature dish from texas that we serve only on thursdays at lunch and dinner. We are also known for our crab cakes,” bobby Plough says. “they’re Gulf coast style, so we spice them up a bit; it’s not what you’d expect if you’re used to the maryland version.”
spice and flavor are the order of the day around here, and the menu reflects many styles of cooking seafood. Plough says he finds lots of ways to blend cultures and cuisines to test the local palate. that also means adding new things to the specials board and the menu, such as the “Petite Portion” area, for those who might be dieting or cutting back on their dining budget.
“People around here know their seafood, so we have to work to keep them interested,” Plough says. “but we’re 15 years old now, so i’m starting to think we’re going to make it.” – Joe Morris

While shooting the Images Elizabeth City magazine
recently, i had the pleasure
of photographing and tasting
some delicious treats. elizabeth
city has quite a sweet tooth,
it seems, which worked out
great because so do i.
chocolate house in elizabeth
city offers a wide array of
sweets and while shopping in
the southgate mall you can stop
in and get some bon bons to go
or just enjoy some ice cream.
the cupcakery in downtown
elizabeth city offers cupcakes
and other baked goods, as well.
e-city’s vices are not limited to
sweets, however, if while you are
getting your caffeine buzz on you
get a hankering for some fresh
baked goods with a dose of sugar,
you are in luck. sister stores
muddy Waters coffee house and
nine bars espresso offer fresh
baked cakes, breads and other
baked goods all made on-site
at nine bars by chef esther.
