IFLA Library Map of the World
Dear Colleagues,
IFLA conducted a survey to prepare a Library Map of the World in 2017. For the purpose, they sent a questionnaire
that required comprehensive information from all types of libraries including National Library, Academic Library,
Public Library, Community Library, School Library and Other Libraries.
The issue was discussed in the last meeting of ILA-Executive Committee and it was decided that ILA must participate
in such type of survey, because any global map of library world will be incomplete without participation of India
which has thousands of libraries to cater to the needs of vast population of the country. We therefore decided that
proforma for different types of libraries be assigned to the office bearers of ILA as follows:
National Library - Dr. Chetan Sharma
Academic Library - Dr. Mohan Kherde
Public Library - Prof. B. Ramesha
Community Library - Dr. Rishi Tiwari
School Library and - Dr. Kiran Lata
Other Library - Dr. Dharam Kumar
As it was a very important survey from the point of view of Indian Librarianship, we requested all to fill up the
questionnaire assigned and the last date of submission was 30th June 2017. We thank all concerned for the
cooperation and kind gesture for undertaking such a remarkable milestone for the interest of Indian Librarianship
and for the participation of this world level mapping of libraries from India.
IFLA WLIC 2020 Expression of Interest With reference to the invitation of EOI on IFLA WLIC 2020, we are happy to inform you that the Apex Body of ILA
has decided to host IFLA 2020. Consequently, in view of the dimensions of the International Conference, IFLA 2020
as contained in the document of EOI-IFLA World Library and Information Congress 2020, we contacted a few five
star hotels in Delhi and Convention Centers in Hyderabad and elsewhere. Finally, we have received detailed
proposals and formal bid documents from:
• Novotel Hyderabad Convention Centre & Hyderabad International Convention Centre, Novotel & HICC
Complex, (Near Hitec City), P.O. Bag 1101, Cyberabad Post Office, Hyderabad - 500 081, India.
• Taj Palace, New Delhi, Sardar Patel Marg, Diplomatic Enclave, New Delhi-110021, India.
To the best of our understanding, the document fulfils the prescribed requirements including the tentative financial
requirements.
Indian Library Association is committed to cooperate and coordinate in all the activities/preparation of hosting IFLA
2020, as and when required.

• Schools can directly order books from NCERT Portal
From this year, schools across the country will place textbook orders online with the NCERT directly to ensure that
they are available in time to students for next year. This would save parents paying extra money to source books
from private publishers, often on account of non-availability of the NCERT books.
Taken from LIS Leadership and shared by Pralhad Jadhav, Senior Manager at Knowledge Repository, Khaitan & Co.
• MIT Press announces a new collaboration
Internet Archive collaborates with the MIT Press and Arcadia to digitize and provide access to hundreds of MIT
Press backlist titles. The MIT Press and the Internet Archive announces a partnership, with support from Arcadia,
to scan, preserve, and enable libraries to lend hundreds of MIT Press books that are currently not available
digitally. This partnership represents an important advance in bringing acclaimed titles across the MIT Press’
publications in science, technology, art, and architecture to a global online audience. The joint initiative is a crucial
early step in Internet Archive’s ambitious plans to digitize and provide public access to four million books, by
partnering widely with university presses and other publishers to source print works, and enable readers to borrow
the digital versions from any library that owns the physical book, as well as from archive.org.

• Free and liberated e-books, carefully produced for the true book lover
Standard e-books is a volunteer driven, not-for-profit project that produces lovingly formatted, open source, and
free public domain e-books. E-book projects like Project Gutenberg transcribe e-books and make them available for
the widest number of reading devices. Standard e-books takes e-books from sources like Project Gutenberg, formats
and typesets them using a carefully designed and professional-grade style guide, lightly modernizes them, fully
proofreads and corrects them, and then builds them to take advantage of state-of-the-art e-reader and browser
technology. Standard e-books aren’t just a beautiful addition to your digital library, they’re a high quality standard
to build your own e-books.

• New system to catalogue library books
In a decision which may adversely affect the marketing of Indian books in other countries, the Ministry of Culture
(MoC) has decided to merge the functions of the Central Reference Library (CRL) with the National Library.
The CRL, located in the National Library campus in Kolkata, is responsible for the publication and sale of the
Indian National Bibliography (INB). The INB is the list of all books published in India annually and is the key
source for foreign libraries to know about the books published in India.

• Current and future technology that will be affecting library services for years to come
LITA’s annual top technology trends panel presents the current and future technology that will be affecting library
services for years to come. This year’s session included perspectives from resource sharing (Veronda Pitchford,
director of membership development and resource sharing, Reaching across Illinois Library System), public
libraries (Emily Almond, director of IT, Georgia Public Library Service), library consultants (Marshall Breeding),
European libraries (Vanessa Hannesschläger, researcher, Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities) and academic
libraries (Tara Radniecki, engineering librarian at the University of Nevada-Reno). As an academic engineering
librarian, the panel was drawn to Radniecki and her portion on makerspaces. “Makerspaces should meet the needs
of your patrons and be built around your budget and staff,” shared Radniecki.
