K r e m s m i i n s t e r , 1869 August 12. Gabriel Strasser,

On the Corrections of Bozcvard's Elements of J u p i t e r and S a t u r n (Paris, 1821). k. k. Professor ond Astronom.

By Hugh B F C ~ , Formerly of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. (From the Proceedings of the Royal Society, 110, 1869.)

T h e T a h l e s of J u p i t e r and S a t u r y which have been used fnr some years past in the coniputations of the ,,BerlSner Jahrhuch" and ,,Nautical Almanac", differ more from obser- vation than i s consistent with the present requirements of astronomy; and, moreover, abundant means for the correction of Bouvards ,,Elements" exist in the publication of the Greenwich Planefrry Observations, 1750 - 1835, and the annual volunies issued from the Royal Observatory since 1836. The present work, which h a s been undertaken for

this purpose, is based exclusively on the Greenwich Obser- vatidns, 1750 -1865.

Each mean group of observations in the Greenwich Planetary Reductions etc. gives the mean error of the planet's tabular geocentric place, with i t s equivalent in terms of the heliocentric errors of the earth and planet; but in the present investigation the places of CarZini's Solar Tables, which have been used throughout the whole period (with the exception of 1864 and 1865), have been accepted without
