• Number of Students in Choir- 150• Number of Students in Band- 85• Number of Students in Orchestra- 20• Number of Students in Guitar- 30• Total Students in Music Program- 285• School Enrollment- Approximately 1,500
• 81 % of the school population not enrolled in school music program
Dilemma:How can the music program
be adjusted to include other types of music and
get more students involved?
Discourses and Power

Race and Gender
At My School:The majority of students are white (63%)
and female (75%)School wide, white students make up 50% of the student body, and females
make up only 49% of the student body. Possible Implication: To non-members, choir may seem like it’s a club for white
females.
Are we practicing “safe” multiculturalism?

Subject Matter
Sexuality Public schools are hetero-centric in nature, and
the music classroom is usually no exception.
“Our sex is not something that lies beyond the discursive realm but is always produced as a
reiteration of hegemonic norms.” - Butler (Nayak and Kehily p. 465)
Possible Solution:
Create a popular music class that is based on
student interests and is student driven.
Possible Obstacles
• Rejection by local administration• Funding• Needing to submit curriculum ideas to
district officials• Finding a balance between student
expression and school policy
Performance Based
