VliegschoolHilversumintegrateselectrictrainingaircraftintrainingcurriculum

Hilversum,9October2017–iFly,distributorfortheBeneluxofSlovenianaircraftmanufacturerPipistrel,andVliegschool Hilversum (VSH) will jointly be presenting electric flying at Hilversum airport. The innovative

Pipistrel Alpha Electro a 2-seat training aircraft with a 60 kW electric motor, flies quietly and is ultra-efficient.

iFlyandVliegschoolHilversumhavesignedanletterofintenttointroduceelectricflyingintheNetherlands.All

preprations are being made to have a Pipistrel Alpha Electro operationtional at VSH in 2019. iFly andVliegschoolHilversumwillusetheinterimperiodtoensurethatelectricflyingispossible inTheNetherlands.

This includes thedevelopmentof trainingmanuals,e-learning, flight simulatoraswellaselectric chargersatHilversum as well as at other airports. The Green Alliance (we) shall have additional alliances with other

innovativeflyingschoolsandknowledgeinstitutionsintheBenelux.AircraftwillbemaintainedbyVSHAircraftMaintenance,themaintenancecompanyofVliegschoolHilversum.

iFlyandVliegschoolHilversumexpectthattheintroductionofelectricflyinganewgenerationoffuturepilots

willbeattractedtoquietandeco-friendlyflying.

ThePipistrelAlphaElectro isalreadyinuse inSwitzerlandandanEASAcertifiedproductionmodelwillbebeavailablein2019.TheEuropeanAviationSafetyAgency(EASA)areworkingwithPipistrelonthecertification

programmeofthisaircraft.SwitzerlandiscurrentlythetestbedofelectricaircraftinEuropeasitisnotboundbyEASArules.

The Pipistrel Alpha Electro is a 2 person training aircraft (EASA-LSA) with an innovative propellor which is

poweredbya60kW(80HP)electricengine.Themotorweighsonly14kilogram.Thebatterypack containsbatterycellshavingacapacityof21kWhwhichallowfor1.5hoursofflighttime.Inpracticethismeansaflight

ofonefullhouranda30minutereservebeforeafastrechargeof45to60minutesisrequired.

During the flight during descent for landing up to 13% of energy is recuperated by a specially designedpropellor that can generate electricity by way of regenerative breaking technology. The costs of green

electricitywhichisneededfora1hourflightisabout€2,-.ThePipistrelAlphaElectrohasamaximumtake-offweightof600kgandausefulpayloadof250kg. Ithasashorttake-offdistanceandarateofclimbof1,250

ft/min. As such it is an ideal quiet and eco-friendly training aircraft for flight schools, especially at a greenairfieldsuchasHilversum.

AheadoftheintroductionofthePipistrelAlphaElectro,VliegschoolHilversumwilladdaPipistrelVirusSW121

withaquietandefficientRotaxenginetoit’sfleet.

Thisaircraftisequippedwithaglasscockpit,autopilotandhasapayloadof250kg.Ithasacruisespeedof130knotsanduses17litermogas(autmotive‘Super’fuel)perhour.VliegschoolHilversumwillusetheVirusSW121

fortrainingandrental.TrainingmaterialswillbedevelopedfortheVirusSW121, includinge-learningandasimulator.

(A typical flight lessonnormally lasts about60minutes). In the futurewith theAlphaElectro80%of theabinitio training towards a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) can be done flying on the Pipistrel Alpha Electro. This

includescircuit training, short local flightsandpracticingthemanoeuvreswhicharepartof thePrivatePilotsyllabus. The Alpha Electro (previously called the WATTsUP during its development) is now flying as a

prototypeandwillbeusedbyflyingschoolsinSwitzerlandthisyear.

BesidesthepersonalisedinstructionVliegschoolHilversumalsousese-leariningintheirtrainingprogrammeonall theiraircraft.ForthePipistrelAlphaElectroandtheVirusSW121 ‘trainingdrills’willbedeveloped.These

drillsarepracticalquestionsaboutinformationdetailedinthePilot’sOperatingHandbookandunderstandingof specific flyingcharacteristicsandperformanceof theaircraft.Withnumerousphotosanddiagrams this is

idealforconversiontrainingofstudentpilotstoanewaircrafttypebutalsoforpilotswhoalreadyhavetheirlicence who need to remain ‘current’. In so doing Vliegschool Hilversum and iFly are actively working to

promotesafetyinGeneralAviationinTheNetherlands.

Ahead of these demonstration on Friday 13 October the press will have the opportunity to see and to be
