Since2001,HitachiandIBMhavehadlicenseagreementsinplacethatprovideHitachiaccess
toIBMAPIsandinterfacespecificationsformainframestorageplatformsaswellasIBMaccess
toselectedHitachiAPIs.AccesstotheseAPIshasenabledHitachistoragesystemstosupport
PPRC,XRC,FlashCopy®,ParallelAccessVolumes(PAV),HyperPAV,MultipleAllegiance(MA),
HighPerformanceFICON(zHPF)andBasicHyperSwap®.Thelicenseagreementshavealso
givenIBMaccesstoHitachiAPIsforNanoCopy™disasterrecoverymanagertechnologyand
HitachiShadowImage®HeterogeneousReplication.ThislicensingagreementalsoenablesHitachi
andHitachiDataSystemstodevelopanddeliverstoragemanagementsoftwareformainframe

Tiered Recovery and ProtectionTheabilitytoprotectandrecoveryourdatarequirescreationofandaccesstoatotallyseparate
copyorthedata.Dependingonthesituation,thecopiesmaybelocaland/orremoteandprovide
theabilitytoselectthecopybasedonlocationRTOorRPO.
Theseseparatecopiesnotonlyprovideprotectionanddataavailabilityintheeventofanoutageor
disasterbutalsoenabletestingagainstrealdataaswellastheperformanceofsupportoperations,
suchasbackuptotapeorconsistencychecking.
In-System Replication■■ Hitachi Compatible Mirroring for IBM® FlashCopy®providessupportcompatiblewithIBM
FlashCopyV02andprovidesapplication-aware,near-instantsnapshotbackups,withminimal
performanceimpactontheapplications.Italsoprovidesnear-instantrestorecapabilitytoim-
proveservicelevelsandapplicationavailability(seeFigure2).
■■ Hitachi ShadowImage® Heterogeneous Replicationsoftwareprovidesnondisruptive,host-
independentdatareplicationtocreatecopiesofanycustomeraccessibledatawithinasingle
Hitachistoragesystem.Thesecopiescanprovideimmediate,nondisruptiveaccessandsharing
ofinformationfordecisionsupport,testanddevelopment.Theycanalsooptimizetapebackup

operations.ShadowImagecopiesprovidenearlyinstantrecoveryfromdatacorruption(see
Figure2).
■■ Consistency groupsareastandardfeatureofHitachiin-systemreplicationofferings,which
ensureconsistencyofcrossvolumedatawhenreplicatingormakingpoint-in-timecopies.In
mainframeenvironments,consistencygroupsusemainframetimestampstoensureconsistency
acrossvolumes.
■■ Multiple tiersprovidetheabilitywithShadowImagetomakefirstandsecondgenerationcopies
ofvolumesthatarebeingcopiedbyShadowImage.Thissupportsdisk-basedbackupaswellas
additionalcopiesfortestingorbackinguptotape.

Remote ReplicationHitachireplicationsolutionsformainframeenvironmentssupportintermixenvironments,whichcan

disruptive,hostindependent,zero-data-loss,rapid-restartremotedatareplicationsolutionfor

Intoday'scomplexITenvironments,itisnotunusualfordataaccesstocrossmanyboundaries,
includingvolumes,storagesystems,databases,operatingsystemsandapplications.Manyap-
plications,suchascustomerservice,orderentry,inventoryandInternet-basede-commerce,may
allsharethesamedatabasesandneedtobeconsistentwitheachotherdowntothetransaction
level.Ifitisnecessarytorestartthiscollectionofapplicationsduetoanoutage,equipmentfailure
ordisaster,itiscriticalthatthatalldataisconsistenttoasinglepointintimeacrosstheenterprise.
Hitachihasdevelopedseveralsolutionstoaddressthiscriticalneed:
Consistency groupsprovideconsistentcopiesofdataonsecondaryand/orremotestoragesys-
tems.Bothmainframeandopensystemsvolumescanbeintermixedinconsistencyandextended
consistencygroups.Whenreplicatingvolumeswithinasinglestoragesystemorbetweentwo
storagesystems,consistencygroupsensurethatthereplicateddataisconsistentandsynchronized
toasinglepointintimeacrossvolumesinthestoragesystem.Inthesituationwherethereplicated
dataexistsacrossmultiplestoragesystems[upto12storagecontrollers(12x12)],extendedcon-
sistencygroupsensurethedataisconsistentandsynchronizedtoasinglepointintimeacrossall
volumesinallassociatedstoragesystems(seeFigure5).Mainframeenvironmentsuseamainframe
timestampassociatedwitheachrecordtoensureconsistency.Theseextended consistency
groupsareafeatureofHitachireplicationofferings.

Consistencygroupsandextendedconsistencygroupsuseamainframetimestamptoensure
consistencyacrossvolumesandstoragecontrollers.
Three Data Center ReplicationThethreedatacenterreplicationsolutionusesbothHitachiTrueCopySynchronousreplicationand
HitachiUniversalReplicatorasynchronousreplication.Itprovidesasynchronouscopytoaseparate
Hitachistoragesystemwithinmetro-distanceusingTrueCopyaswellasanasynchronouscopyto
asecondHitachistoragesystemthatcanbelocatedatanydistancefromtheprimarysite.When
HitachiShadowImageHeterogeneousReplicationisusedwithUniversalReplicatoranditsATTime
Splitfeature,itprovidesforconsistentcopiesbetweenUniversalReplicatorandShadowImagewith
nodataloss,nodistanceconstraintsandnobreakorpauseoftheUniversalReplicatorreplication
relationship.Therearetwoimplementationsofthreedatacenterreplication:cascadedreplication
andmultitargetreplication.
Cascaded replicationprovidessynchronousreplicationfromaproductionHitachienterprise-
classstoragesystem(e.g.VSP,USPV)toasecondarystoragesystemusingHitachiTrueCopy
Synchronousreplicationsoftware.Itthenasynchronouslyreplicatesthedatafromthesecondary
storagesystemtoanout-of-regionHitachienterprisestoragesystemusingHitachiUniversal
Replicatorwithnodatalossintheeventofaproductionsiteoutageordisaster(seeFigure6).
Thethreedatacentercascadesolution:

Delta Resyncprovidesadditionaldisasterrecoveryprotection.Withamultitargetthreedatacenter
configurationasdescribedabove,theproductionsitemirrorsdatasynchronouslytoahotstandby
siteusingHitachiTrueCopySynchronousreplicationandasynchronouslytoathirdremotesite
usingHitachiUniversalReplicator.Iftheproductionsiteexperiencesafailure,thehotstandbysite
takesoverandusestheremotesitefordisasterrecovery.WithDeltaResync,onlythechangesnot
recognizedbetweenthehotstandbyandremotesite,asreceivedattheremotesitewhentheout-
ageoccurred,aretransferredfromthehotstandbysite(newproductionsite)totheremotesite(new
disasterrecoverysite).Asaresult,DisasterRecoveryprotectionforthehotstandbysiteresumes
withinminutesinsteadofhours.
ATTime-SplitisafeatureofUniversalReplicatorthateliminatestheneedtoactuallysplitthe
UniversalReplicatorpairswhencreatingatertiarycopywithShadowImage.Rather,theATTime-split
operationisperformedonthespecifiedremoteShadowImagecopygroupandcreatesadata-
consistentsnapshotataspecifiedtimewhilesustainingtheUniversalReplicatorcopygroupina
duplexstate.ATTime-Splitusesmainframetimestampstoensureconsistencywhencreatingthe
tertiarycopy.
Four Data Center ReplicationHitachiDataSystemsalsoprovidesafourdatacenterreplicationsolutionusingbothHitachi
TrueCopySynchronousreplicationandHitachiUniversalReplicatorasynchronousreplication.
ItprovidesbothathreedatacentermultitargetsolutionwithasynchronouscopytoaHitachi
storagecontrolleratahotstandbysitewithinmetro-distanceusingTrueCopySynchronousand
anasynchronouscopytoaremotelocationusingUniversalReplicator.Italsocreatesanadditional
asynchronouscopybasedonthecopyatthehotstandbysiteataseparateremotelocationusing

UniversalReplicator.Thissolutionprovidesbothfastrecoverywithexcellentdatacurrencyforlocal
sitefailuresandadvancedprotectionfromregionaldisastersatmultipleout-of-regionremotedata

Automated Disaster RestartHitachiTrueCopySynchronousreplicationsupportsIBMGDPSHyperSwap,aswellasBasic
HyperSwap.Thesoftwareprovidesautomatedrestartonasecondarysystem,locallyorata
remotesite,intheeventofaplannedorunplannedoutage(seeFigure9).Thisincludessupport
forconsistencygroupsacrossvolumesandextendedconsistencygroupsacrossmultiplestorage
controllers.ItalsosupportsGDPSHyperSwapandBasicHyperSwapinthreedatacenter
