Hymn: Immaculate Mary, SMH 577 Maria zart, von edler Art – Arnolt Schlick (c. 1455~1460 – after 1521) Schlick was a German organist, lutenist and composer best known for his treatise on organ building and performance. “Maria zart, von edler Art”, based on a popular German song of the day, was published as a part of his Tabulaturen etlicher Lobgesang und Lidlein (Mainz, 1512), the first printed organ tablature surviving today. Magnificat, Quarti Toni – Jean Titelouze (c. 1562/3 – 1633) Titelouze was a French composer and organist of the early Baroque period. His hymns and Magnificat settings are among the earliest known published French classic organ collections. The French classic organ music is firmly rooted in the church liturgy. One of the principal genres was the “verset”, a short composition that was played in place of one phrase (one verse) of plainchant, alternating with verses sung by the choir (“alternatim”). The Magnificat is a part of the sung Vespers and was performed in alternatim as follows: (Sung verses are in italics. Organ versets in bold.) Hymn: Ave Maria, SMH 441 Magnificat from Les Vêpres du Commun des Fêtes de la Sainte Vierge, Op. 18 – Marcel Dupré (1886 – 1971) This piece traces its origin to Dupré's organ improvisation at the Vespers on August 15th, 1919, in Notre Dame. Claude Johnson, the managing director of Rolls Royce who happened to be at the Vespers, was greatly impressed with the organist and commissioned him to compose short pieces in the style of the 15 versets for the Office of Assumption. The cycle, comprising 5 Psalm Antiphons, 4 versets based on the hymn “Ave Maris Stella” and 6 Magnificat versets, was premiered as part of Dupré's London debut in 1920 and established his international reputation as an organist. The Magnificat, though structured in the tradition of French liturgical music, is no longer strictly based on the plainchant, but illustrates the corresponding verses with kaleidoscopic music. 1.
