Visualization Tools
Newer & Emerging Visualization Tools:1. Drones2. 360° Cameras3. 3D Laser Scanning4. 3D Modeling5. Virtual/Augmented Reality
Drones
DRONES
Drones
Uses for Drones in Design / Construction1. Photo / Video documentation of large
areas2. Ability to view tall or difficult to access
structures (tanks, towers, etc.) 3. Can be outfitted with special cameras
(LiDar, Infrared, etc.)
360° Cameras
360° CAMERAS
360° Cameras
Advantages of 360 Cameras:1. Ability to pan around (similar to Google
Street View)2. Can document large area in a single
photo (reduces number of photos)3. Creates efficiency by reducing time to
photograph a site
3D Laser Scanning
3D LASER SCANNING
3D Laser Scanning
What is 3D Laser Scanning?1. Collects up to 50,000 points per second.2. Most scans take 4 to 10 minutes3. Can combine multiple instrument setups
to create 3D model4. Accuracy of each point can be 6mm or
better (< ¼”) depending on scanner5. Can be combined with 360 photographs
to provide photo-realistic 3D model6. Can be imported into various software
packages, including AutoCAD

Tank 3D Point Cloud & 3D Modeled Tank
Final 3D Modeled Tank
3D Laser Scanning
Advantages:1. Higher resolution (more points) than
traditional surveying2. Fast scan time = labor savings3. Collects everything within field of view
(minimizes additional trips)4. Can scan difficult to reach features
(inside deep tanks, high ceilings, across inaccessible paths)
3D Laser Scanning
Disadvantages:1. Large file sizes (GB’s of data instead of
MB’s)2. Limited to field of view (shadow effect)3. Some learning curve to make data
useable format for design
3D Modeling
3D MODELING
3D Modeling
Design Phase1. Stakeholder buy-in (conceptual designs)2. Can be used to generate 2D drawings3. Spec driven design4. Conflict detection
Construction Phase1. Constructability review2. Obtain additional detailed dimensions3. Building Information Modeling (BIM)

Virtual / Augmented Reality
VIRTUAL / AUGMENTED REALITY
Virtual / Augmented Reality
Definitions:
Virtual Reality: an artificial environment which is experienced through sensory stimuli (as sights and sounds) provided by a computer and in which one's actions partially determine what happens in the environment
Virtual / Augmented Reality
Virtual / Augmented Reality
Definitions:
Augmented Reality: an enhanced version of reality created by the use of technology to overlay digital information on an image of something being viewed through a device (such as a smartphone camera)
