WHAT HAPPENED? • Saturday, April 26th, 1986:
• Reactor #4 was undergoing a test to test backup power supply incase of a power loss.
• Power fell too low. Concentration of Xenon-135 rose
• Workers continued to test in order to control rising levels.
• All rods were immediately ordered back in, but it was too late. Rods became too hot and melted.
• Explosion blows hole through roof, graphite fire begins. Meltdown has officially began.
• About 30% of radiation begins to escape.
• 31 deaths that day (mainly workers and firefighters)
• Estimated 900,000 since (due to cancer)
