The families we see each and every day live with frightening uncertainty. far too many people don’t know how they will afford to pay for tonight’s meal, let alone pay for the mountain of household bills that are stacking up before them.
In 2010, we saw that, for the first time in 25 years, nearly 10 percent of american workers are jobless – 15.7 million people out of work. here in Minnesota, that translates to more than 263,000 people who are not earning a paycheck, not paying taxes, not waking up each morning with a sense of purpose and contributing to the greater good.
last year, hIreD helped more than 12,500 clients – more people than ever before in our 42-year history. This growing demand far outweighs our capacity to serve the people in need. But, in truth, there is only one barrier to helping more people and more families. resources … or a lack of them.
Many individuals and organizations have already stepped up to address the dire consequences of joblessness. Their investments in hIreD have made an immediate positive impact. local community foundations and businesses have generously supported our mission. employers throughout the region have partnered with hIreD to help prepare our clients for work and provide them with valuable opportunities. we have many policy makers in our state government who understand the value of workforce development and their continued support is critical to our success. what our clients need now – what our economy needs now – is for everyone to participate in this cause.

Committed to defining the future of workforce development, HIRED was granted $25,000 last June from the Greater Twin Cities United Way and Delta Airlines through the 2010 Delta Innovation Award. The award was given in recognition of innovative program changes and ongoing employer collaboration.
With the success of HIRED’s sector-training model, several micro-training programs have been added, giving job seekers the opportunity to enhance their skills or learn additional skills in an industry in which they already have experience. One example is HIRED’s computer controlled micro-machining program. To complement graduates’ manufacturing training, HIRED, in collaboration with Hennepin Technical College, offered additional training such as R&D lab process training or precision metal stamping training to ensure HIRED’s job seekers bring skills to the table that employers value.
HIRED has also maintained close connections with employers in the area to ensure a demand-driven approach to all training. Through HIRED’s 20-member Employer Advisory Board and several industry-specific advisory boards, the organization is well positioned to develop training that is specific to the needs of employers and, most importantly, results in jobs for its clients.

Top 10 of 2010Everyone can appreciate a good list, right? In this year’s Annual Report you’ll find 10 of the most memorable happenings at HIRED in 2010. From serving a record number of clients to being named the top provider of MFIP services in Hennepin County … from a $25,000 award for innovation to playing a key role in the U.S. government’s census campaign … 2010 is a year that will be remembered by our staff as one of many accomplishments despite the incredibly challenging economic climate. So, take a few moments and read on about the positive impact HIRED has had on our community in the last year.
In 2010 the so-called “jobless recovery” continued to be a top news story – and continued to send record numbers of job seekers to HIRED. HIRED rose to the challenge, taking creative, community-based approaches to getting people back to work. In these tough economic times, HIRED was able to serve 2,000 more clients in 2010 than in the previous year, without sacrificing the quality of its services. That’s more than 12,500 job seekers who are now either employed or better positioned for employment, thanks to HIRED.

$29.03 5With funding from the St. Paul Foundation, HIRED was able to enhance an existing employment and training program for St. Paul youth. The goal was to increase internship and job placements by building relationships with employers and matching job-ready young people with opportunities that fit them best.
More than 500 unemployed youth completed HIRED’s Job Seeking Skills and Job Keeping Skills component, and HIRED developed dozens of work experience/internship sites customized to the career goals of 68 youth interns. HIRED helped 83 percent of the older program participants (ages 19–21) to secure employment. By enlisting HIRED’s Business Development Coordinator Barbara Doyle to connect with employers and find leads, HIRED counselors were able to focus more on preparing their clients for the workplace. “The program was very successful,” said Doyle. “So many of these young people had given up hope of ever finding a job. But finding a new path is often just a matter of giving them encouragement – letting them know they can go to an interview and get a good job – then connecting them with an employer we know is a good fit.”
Golf Galaxy selected HIRED for a dislocated worker project to assist employees of its former corporate headquarters. Through career counseling, workshops and training opportunities, HIRED has helped program participants achieve an average wage of $29.03 – higher than the average pre-layoff wage of $28.45.
With HIRED’s support, former Golf Galaxy employee Heather went back to school for radiation therapy training. She’s achieving a 4.0 grade average and said, “Having the opportunity to go back to school has altered the path of my life. I can assure you that the assistance thus far has not been wasted, and I have put my whole heart into school with results that I have never seen out of myself before. Every morning I wake up for class I feel as though I’m blessed to be able to be doing so and securing my career for the future, and it is all because of people like you who can turn a very bleak situation into a positive.” The Golf Galaxy program was just one of 21 dislocated worker projects HIRED operated in FY2010.
The U.S. Census helps give everyone a voice – HIRED is passionate about advocacy and wanted to make sure everyone was counted. The census is used to determine allocation for crucial items like public funding and congressional seats, yet often many of the populations HIRED serves and neighborhoods where HIRED offices are located remain unrecorded. HIRED jumped in with enthusiasm, setting up census stations at each of its offices. HIRED staff and counselors worked diligently to educate clients about the importance of completing the census form, then provided the necessary documents and answered questions.
Achieving an accurate census count was particularly important last year because Minnesota was at risk of losing a congressional seat. And, since the census is used to determine funding levels, a lower census count could
impact funding for HIRED programs. Thanks in part to the census efforts of HIRED and other nonprofits, Minnesota kept all its congressional seats and helped the state achieve an 81 percent mail participation rate, the second highest in the nation.

Despite a difficult economy, HIRED counselors work tirelessly to help job seekers find their dream jobs. Take Mary Anne, as one example. After losing her position as a receptionist/administrative assistant for a property management company, Mary Anne came to HIRED for help in landing a job that would match her passions. With an interest in the
healthcare industry, she enrolled in the electroneurodiagnostic technician (ENDT) program at Minneapolis Community and Technical College.
Mary Anne’s understanding of the medical field and stellar academic record led to a couple of internships and a part-time position at Abbott Northwestern Hospital’s Noran Clinic. Today, she is earning more money per hour than she’s ever made before. Christina Lira, Mary Anne’s HIRED counselor said, “I consider Mary Anne to be a true success story. I’ve watched her grow into a place of confidence and wholeness … a job that brings her much joy and is truly her ‘dream job.’”
HIRED’s welfare-to-work program for young parents in Ramsey County received a “Best Practices” award from the Minnesota Workforce Council Association for its innovative, holistic programming. Recognizing that many young parents face multiple barriers to employment – including lack of education and work history, a small support network, few skills and even homelessness – HIRED has established a team of professionals to help youth on a variety of levels. Accommodating the many needs young parents have, HIRED’s staff includes housing specialists, domestic abuse advocates and mental health professionals, among others. HIRED’s counselors help youth search for employment, complete high school and pursue a post-secondary education. But counselors also know that one of the best ways to ensure a successful future and secure a living wage is to provide regular encouragement, which the organization offers during its weekly
“Hour of Optimism” workshops.
In 2010, HIRED’s staff continued to break new ground in providing job seekers with new and innovative job search strategies. HIRED helped over 300 people each month through its highly popular (often standing
room only) seminar series at public libraries and workforce centers across the Twin Cities. In the series, the job seeker learns how to target their professional skill sets and set themselves apart from other applicants. Job seekers discover the formula for a successful job search as they learn how to demonstrate their skills and qualifications while competing for a particular position.
Melissa Erickson, senior employment counselor, stated, “We work with our clients as they move through the seminar series while meeting each of them where they are within their job search. Our professional team
utilizes a proven job search model, shown below, while exploring all areas necessary to ensure the job seeker is fast-tracked into the job market.”

In a field of 16 agencies, HIRED’s Hennepin County Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) offerings led the competition and the organization brought home a “Top Service Provider” award from Hennepin County for its superior results in helping people secure employment and transition off welfare – 196 clients. HIRED Division Director Barb Dahl suggested three key points of differentiation that contributed to the organization’s success: First, experience. HIRED has served the MFIP population for 17 years and staff members understand the complex county program and have a wealth of knowledge in tackling the employment challenges that often plague the population. Second, location, location, location. With four offices serving MFIP clients across Hennepin County, HIRED is better positioned to meet clients where it’s most convenient – in their neighborhoods. And third, employer relationships. HIRED counselors are well-networked and have good working relationships with employers across the metro. Once a client is job-search-ready, counselors are able to quickly identify employment prospects and make a match. Dahl said,
“At the end of the day, we’re efficient. Our clients are able to quickly secure employment and take steps to bettering their lives, and the community benefits from having additional tax-paying residents.”
Chosen as a beneficiary of the Men’s Wearhouse National Suit Drive, HIRED received about 65 suits and 35 sport coats during a Twin Cities collection drive. John Klem, HIRED senior program manager, knows the value of a quality suit. “So often, succeeding in an interview can come down to the details,” he says. “It’s these details that make the difference between coming in first and coming in second. For our clients, having a good suit can make that
difference.” Following the suit drive, HIRED operated a “Suit Suite” in its Griggs-Midway office in St. Paul, giving HIRED clients and other job seekers the chance to find a gently used suit … a suit
that would give them the chance they deserved. Edroy Dames, a HIRED client and suit recipient, said, “I’m sure that the food
manager certification training HIRED provided and my new navy
suit helped me land a job offer.”
“With the donations we received,” Klem continued, “men are walking into their interviews with confidence and assurance – an essential step toward securing employment and future economic stability.”

where they are needed. With 15 service sites across the Twin Cities, including staff on-site at a high school, homeless shelter and several libraries, we’re prepared to meet clients where they’re at.
• collaborative. Through our partnerships with human service agencies, public schools and correctional facilities, we reduce service duplication, improving program effectiveness and client experience.
• responsive. HIRED’s multi-cultural staff understands the needs of employers and people looking for work. Our flexibility and expertise enable us to quickly respond to emerging needs by developing new service models and offering services in new locations.

across the Twin Cities, having established mutually beneficial relationships with 2,780 employers.
• Last year alone, HIRED helped nearly 200 clients move off public assistance.
• HIRED administers over 100 programs that serve a range of clients, from youth at risk to white-collar dislocated workers, across all industries.
