Tours has serviced the Murray Malleearea.

Owners Roy and Colleen Heinicke,of Murray Bridge, have been continu-ally developing the company from thebeginning.

“We were going to have two busesand ended up with 20,” Mrs Heinickesaid.

“It started with tours and charters,and then progressed with school runsand the local town service, Dial-a-Ride.”

Mrs Heinicke said a cut-throat mar-ket and high prices in recent years hadmade things tougher.

“It’s been hard work in the last fiveyears (when you are) compared withlarger interstate companies,” she said.

“But you just put your head downand work hard.”

Manager Conway Constant agreedthat hard work had propelled theprogress of Highway Hiker Tours.

Although Highway Hiker Tourstravel nationwide, their roots are firm-ly grounded in local soil.

According to Mr Heinicke, 90 percent of equipment and products havebeen purchased locally.

“If you look after the local, that’swhat it’s all about,” he said.

Mr Heinicke said it was importantto support local businesses and identi-fied a growing need for coach servicesin the region.

“We cannot operate without thelocal community,” he said.

The staff are all local faces. “Our staff are fantastic.”Mrs Heinicke said all staff had

Government approval.“We’re very fortunate to have won-

derful staff, with all staff fully licensedand accredited ... (and they) are will-ing to assist at any time,” she said.

From interstate tours to schoolexcursions, Highway Hiker Toursguarantees passengers excellent serv-ice, safety and comfort.

Tours has purchased sixnew buses in the past 18months to keep up withdemand fromMurraylands schools.

Manager ConwayConstant said the buseswere a large improve-ment on the old fleet andwould last for years.

“They’ve got morecomfort, seatbelts forsafety, air conditioningand are greener for theenvironment,” he said.

“Our company hasbeen contracted by theDepartment of Educationand Child Services toservice schools inMurray Bridge over thepast 10 years, along withseveral other schools inthe Murraylands.

“The contracts thatwe’ve got are now for 15years, so we have nowsecured our business forthe future.

“So that’s seven school

contracts that we’re sup-plying the Murraylands,plus the Rural City ofMurray Bridge town

service bus (Dial aRide)”. About 600 peo-ple utilise the bus servic-es daily.

Family returns homeHIGHWAY Hiker Tours may be only 21 years

old, but owner Colleen Heinicke’s family has beeninvolved in the community for generations.

Mrs Heinicke was born in Murray Bridge andher father grew up in Mypolonga.

Her family moved, but Colleen returned withher husband Roy 29 years ago and establishingtheir business in 1991.

“We borrowed $40,000 all those years ago andbought our first bus, we worked hard on it, did itup, and within 18 months we had two coaches anda small mini bus, so it just grew really quickbeyond our thoughts,”she said.

Mrs Heinicke said meeting people was theirfavorite part of the job.

“We enjoy meeting lots of different personalitiesand travelling our great country,” she said.

Behind the scenes, the business is a family oper-ation, with determination at the core of its success.

The couple have been heavily involved in thebusiness, performing duties such as cleaning,administration, maintenance and driving.

The Heinicke’s daughter Kylie, along with herhusband Conway, have also been working with thecompany in managerial positions, covering allaspects required to run the business.
