Enjoy a morning of fi shing fun with
the Hickam Outdoor Adventure staff
on Saturday, May 2 and again on
Thursday, May 14 as you try your
skills at bringing in the big one. A wide
variety of reef fi sh and a token shark
or two are ready to put you to the test.
The adventure starts at 8 a.m. and
we’ll provide the fi shing gear, bait and
boat, along with some instructions.
The cost is $35 per person.
Start Sailing Right
Program Opens doors
to great fun!
Learn the in’s and out’s of sailing
a boat at Outdoor Recreation’s
‘Start Sailing Right’ Course being
conducted May 5, 9, 12 and 16 at
Hickam Harbor. This course begins
with instruction from one of our U.S.
Sailing certifi ed instructors. Once
the course is completed and you are
certifi ed, you will have the opportunity
to use three of Hickam Harbor’s
sailboats. The course consists of four
hours of classroom theory, 11 hours
of on-the-water group instruction
and semi-private sailing instruction.
The $167 fee includes textbook,
class materials, boat rental and
instruction. Course sessions will be
held on Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m. and
Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

capital of the world? Learn how to
surf right here at Hickam Outdoor
Recreation on Saturday, May 9
starting at 9:30 a.m. Our professional
instructors will teach you the basics
from standing, paddling, catching
waves and angling down the wave.
This righteous three-hour lesson is
exactly what you need to begin your
surfi ng career. Participants must be
able to swim without a lifejacket. The
cost is $35 per person and the signup
deadline is May 6.

Kayak Paddle
(No howling, please!)
Feel the stress melt away when the
Hickam Outdoor Adventure Program
takes to the water for the Full Moon
Kayak Paddle event on Saturday,
May 9. As the sun slips past the
horizon and the moon climbs into the
evening sky, you’ll glide silently across
the water and soak in the evening’s
peaceful enchantment. All paddling
abilities welcome. The trip begins at 8
p.m. and the $20 fee includes kayaks,
gear and professional guides. Signup

Women’s only Surf
Lessons Available at
Hickam Harbor
Ladies! Come out and get
professional instructions from the
Outdoor Adventure staff on how
to surf in the surfi ng capital of the
world on two Sundays in May, May
10 and 31 at 9 a.m. We will school
you in surfi ng history, wave science,
etiquette and technique. We’ll provide
the right board and a short boat ride
to “the line up” for personal instruction
on excellent waves. Participants must
be able to swim without a lifejacket.

The Memorial Day festivities
continue at Hickam Harbor with
“Splashtacular” on Sunday, May
24. Join us in welcoming summer

Recreation’s giant infl atables, giant
waterslide, banana boat rides,
kayaking, windsurfi ng, sailing,
motorboat rides and MORE! Come
down to Hickam Beach and join
the fun starting at 11 a.m. The cost

ODR teaches you to
walk on water?
Back by popular demand, the ODR
Stand-Up Paddle Board class on
Wednesday, May 27 is a great
way to learn how to glide across
the water and get a pleasant work
out at the same time. Boarding
has been revived on the California
coast and is making headlines
here in Hawaii too. Come out to the
Hickam Harbor and see what it’s
all about and let our experienced
guides teach you the basics of
stand-up paddle boarding. The
class starts at 5 p.m. and costs
$34 per person. Signup deadline
is May 23.
Back to school with
Spear Fishing 101
and 102 Classes
The Hickam Outdoor Adventure
staff will teach the basics of spear
fi shing on Saturday, May 30. The
class is held at Hickam Pool #2.
We’ll go over rules and regulations
set by the state, where you can
and cannot go, and what you can
and cannot eat. You will need a
mask, fi ns, snorkel, be able to
swim and have had some prior
snorkel experience. The 102 class
on Sunday, May 31 allows you
to practice your skills in Hickam
Harbor and maybe bring home
a fi sh dinner. You’ll need mask,
fi ns, snorkel and other equipment
- transportation is on us. The cost
for each class is $35 with a start
time of 9 a.m. Signup by May 27.
Pool 2 will be closed May 4-10 for Phase
1 renovation project to restore the Baby
Pool & clean tiles in the restrooms.

Mamala Bay Golf Course presents
a free Juniors Golf Clinic on Friday,
May 29. This introduction to golf is
conducted by the staff of Mamala
Bay and runs from 4 to 4:45 p.m.

Junior golfers will be placed in three age groups: 7 – 8, 9 –10 and 11 – 12 year olds. Clinics will be held each respective Monday and Tuesday with three sessions held daily: 1 – 1:45 p.m., 2 – 2:45 p.m. and 3 – 3:45 p.m. The last lesson will consist of a playing lesson/golf outing on the golf course. A banquet will follow and certificates of achievement will be awarded to the junior golfers. The banquets will be held on July 20 and 21. Cost for the Summer program is $49. Each junior golfer will receive a shirt, hat, balls and tee pack along with the four lessons. Program classes will be held on June 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30 and July 13 and 14.

Biggest Loser
ContestJoin the fun and excitement
as individuals and 4 person teams compete in a fi tness driven contest to see which one can lose the most weight. This three-month event runs from May 5 to August 5 with par� cipants keeping their own records. Fitness staff will do reassessments every 21 days. The event will be capped off with a special award ceremony on August 5. Hickam’s Biggest Loser Contest is sponsored in part by Big City Diner and United First Financial.

with 12 fi tness-related companies showing off their wares. The Fair runs from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and there will be three areas for tes� ng: body composi� on, blood pressure screening and strength assessment.

Grab a running partner and join in the fun of the May is Fitness Month 10K Relay on Saturday, May 23. Complete a 10k run with 2, 4, and 6 person teams. There will be six adult divisions and three youth divisions. The top three fi nishers in each category will be awarded a prize.
