The wall thickness of the pipe will thus be determined by the chosenhydrostatic design stress for the PE material type and the pressure classof the pipe.

PE pipes, SDR 17.6 can be supplied on specialrequest.Standard lengths are :

PE pipes have a high chemical resistance. They arenot attacked by dilute acids, alkalines or salts butare not suitable with such aggressive chemicals asconcentrated sulphuric and nitric acids, etc.
Advise should also be requested for applicationswith solvents, which can cause swelling and, in somecases, stress cracking.Further data concerning chemical resistance canbe found in ISO/TR 10358.

Hoop stress
form a welded joint that is water tight and homoge-neous. To obtain the best results, the procedureshould be well monitored and the welding parame-ters should be followed. These parameters dependon the wall thickness and the diameter of the pipesor fittings. An automatic recording unit is availablefor this welding process, and facilitates therefore theoperation. It is also important that the pipes aremade of the same resin type. The sameprocedure is also used for welding stubends for flange joints.
1. Butt welding
Butt welding (or butt fusion) is a simple and quickjointing method to connect pipes and fittings of PE.The process starts by cutting the pipe ends straightand cleaning them carefully. A heater plate, thetemperature of which is 210 - 230 °C, is then placedin between, and the ends are heated for a certaintime, initially under pressure and then without pres-sure. The polyethylene becomes soft and a so calledbead is formed at the pipe ends. The heater plateis then removed and the pipe ends are pressedtogether allowed to cool under pressure. This will

(socket, bend, etc.), the polyethylene then melt intoeach other and form a rigid and durable joint. Thisjointing method is very common for gas pipes andpotable water pipes. A welding unit is available forthis procedure and makes the whole operation veryeasy and practical.
2. Electrofusion jointing
This jointing method is utilised for jointing pipes as wellas fittings of PE. This is an easy system where pre-installed resistance wires on the inside of the fittingsare slightly coated with PE. When these wires areconnected to a welding unit, they become warmand the polyethylene consequently melts. Havingthe ends of the pipes in the connection of fitting

3. Flange joints
To be able to make a flange joint, a stubend (flangeadaptor) has to be welded to the end of each pipe.These are then connected to each other by looseflanges, nuts and bolts. Usually, flanges are used inconnections which are to be disassembled at a later
stage, or, in submarine pipe systems. The environ-ment is very important for the choice of looseflange material, which could be made of steel,aluminium or plastic.
4. Compression fittings
Small diameter pipes are jointed by different me-chanical couplings. These are usually made of cor-rosion-resistant metal or plastic and are very simple
to use. These couplings are normally used whenpipes are coiled and the number of joints is small.
