Ok… how about and education?
Singapore: Sports education
Singapore: Malay language education• We need to keep up with students’ changing interest, especially
those in secondary schools.
• They are logged on to the Internet-world of MSN, blogging,
Facebook and these have evolved them to be computer-savvy individuals.
• I would like to encourage teachers to be able to use the same platforms to develop a community of young Malay intellectuals who are able to act as a catalyst in creating
critical and creative thinkers.

Idea 1: DISCUSSION BOARD and WALLTopic: Education
Task type 1: teacher --> studentStudents respond to articles (downloadable from GoDaddy.com), quotations, videos, etc posted by me
Student A’s contribution• ‘…there were never times where parents were
satisfied with how well their children have done because they thought that their children could have done better.
• Such a situation does occur for me. Personally, I felt demoralised, despite the fact that I have reach my goals many times, but it was never enough to satisfy my parents.
• However, this does not mean that children should not be compared or ranked. Comparing and ranking are like sweets. Some of it can do some good to the child but too much of it is unhealthy.’
Idea 1: DISCUSSION BOARD and WALL
Task type 2: student <- -> studentRespond to classmates’ comments on articles,
quotations, videos, etc
Student B’s response to Student A’s contribution
• ‘One point that I totally agree with, is that parents are always not satisfied with their child's academic results and it is very difficult to satisfy them with the results as they think that you can always do better!
• Who will not compare? One illustration that I find quite interesting and useful from her post is that "Comparing and ranking are like sweets. Some of it can do some good to the child but too much of it is unhealthy."- Fasha. Good good! I LIKE! :D’
Idea 1: DISCUSSION BOARD and WALL

Ms Yap’s Homepage Wall for Chemistry
Idea 2: LINKS for VIDEO-SHARING
An introduction: ‘Dear all, please view Sir Ken Robinson's video on creativity and education. An excellent broad overview of the importance of creativity in our changing education landscape.’
Instructions for students: ‘Extract meaningful points and/or examples from the video, and discuss how far you agree or disagree with his views. Substantiate your views with your experiences, what you have read or observed in Singapore or elsewhere.’
Deadline for submission: 02 Sep (WED),2359H
Idea 3: Chat
1. An instant messaging application (think a ‘lesser MSN’)
2. Converse with students ‘real-time’ to clarify doubts on schoolwork
Idea 4: FB applications (create your quizzes)
• Quiz Creator (think grammar, vocabulary, paraphrasing exercises)
Idea 5: FB applications (Games)
‘Stop Global Warming’ game• In the game the goal is to travel from country
to country building things that promote the reduction of CO2 emissions and a more eco-friendly environment.
• At first you start in Iceland. As you progress you will be able to go to more problematic countries with bigger carbon footprints.
Idea 6: FB applications (PPT/PDF resources)
SlideShare • Wealth of resources for teaching and learning• Upload, Download and Share presentations
on your Wall with your FB students and colleagues
• Link them to your Blogs, bookmark them on del.icio.us, Tweet them, etc.
Students’ feedback
• 100% of them agree/strongly agree that FB is interesting for learning
• 100% of them agree that it is easy to gain access and share academic materials
• Students requested more content materials related to topics discussed in the classroom
Concerns for our ‘Children Behind Screens’
1. Is 13 too young?
2. Informal education is less effective? [more equal standing in knowledge creation between teachers and students]
3. Informal language?
4. Spending too much time in a new Third Home? [motivated by choice; habit]
Concerns for our ‘Children Behind Screens’
5. Ouch! I’m flamed!
6. Excuse me, what privacy?
7. Who are FRIENDS, really?
8. Who are MY TEACHERS, really???
In summary, FB is a…
• Many-in-one platform• Outside curriculum time• T-S, S-S Collaboration• Democratic • Responsible information ownership
